Only few detailed investigations have focused on the glycobiology of cranial development. The functional elements in most inductive and morphogenetic processes are not individual cells, but rather collectives of interacting populations and extracellular matrix components that give rise to specific tissues and organs. In situ forming hydrogels of new amino hyaluronic acid/benzoyl-cysteine derivatives as potential scaffolds for cartilage regeneration

A new chemical strategy is described to link ethylenediamino (EDA) groups to primary hydroxyl groups of hyaluronic acid (HA) and the obtained derivatives have been characterized by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR analyses. Such HA–EDA derivatives have been exploited to control the functionalization degree in benzoyl-cysteine (BC) groups, chosen as moieties able to allow both self-assembling in aqueous media and an oxidative crosslinking. Proteins of the peroxisomal membrane can be schematically divided into two groups, one being made up of more or less characterized proteins with generally unknown functions and the other consisting of enzyme activities of which the corresponding proteins have not been characterized. In the present report, these proteins and enzymes are described with the addition of unpublished results regarding their induction by peroxisome proliferators at the post-transcriptional level. Tracer diffusion in polymer and organic liquids close to the glass transition studied by forced rayleigh scattering

Translational diffusion coefficients D of photochronic dye molecules have been measured by forced Rayleigh scattering in polymer diluent systems at compositions from pure polymer to pure diluent. D could be measured down to below the glass transition temperature T g. In the pure diluent, D(T g) was found typically about two decades below that in the pure polymer but still far above the Stokes-Einstein prediction extrapolated from high temperatures. Some experimental results are in contrast with predictions from free-volume theory.

Microfluidic Pumping by Micromolar Salt Concentrations

An ion-exchange-resin-based microfluidic pump is introduced that utilizes trace amounts of ions to generate fluid flows. We show experimentally that our pump operates in almost deionized water for periods exceeding 24h and induces fluid flows of um/s over hundreds of um. This flow displays a far-field, power-law decay which is characteristic of two-dimensional (2D) flow when the system is strongly confined and of three-dimensional (3D) flow when it is not. Using theory and numerical calculations we demonstrate that our observations are consistent with electroosmotic pumping driven by umol/L ion concentrations in the sample cell that serve as 'fuel' to the pump. Influence of Bacteria <i>Pseudomonas fluorescens</i> on the Properties of Latvian Clay

Wide varieties of bacteria are able to produce extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) which are mostly composed of polysaccharides. It is suggested that EPS substances can alter certain clay soil properties due to their ability to adhere to the surface of mineral particles. Most common used microorganisms by the researchers for this purpose are of either genus Bacillus or genus Pseudomonas. Comment on “Local impermeant anions establish the neuronal chloride concentration”

Glykys et al . (Reports, 7 February 2014, p. 670) proposed that cytoplasmic impermeant anions and polyanionic extracellular matrix glycoproteins establish the local neuronal intracellular chloride concentration, [Cl – ] i , and thereby the polarity of γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA A ) receptor signaling. The experimental procedures and results in this study are insufficient to support these conclusions. Contradictory results previously published by these authors and other laboratories are not referred to.

Tenascin in denervated human muscle

Tenascin is a large oligomeric glycoprotein of the extracellular matrix. Its location is limited in innervated muscle tissues. We investigated immunohistologically, using two monoclonal antibodies (mab) against Tenascin, biopsied denervated human muscle of children and adults. Tenascin was present in the interstitial space among denervated muscle fibres. Accumulation of Tenascin in denervated adult muscle tissue was frequent, accumulation in denervated muscle tissue of children was sparse and weak. The two antibodies reacted correspondingly. Abstract Six mineralogically exemplary barren and mineralized hydrothermal veins (with Pb and Zn ores) of Jurassic-Cretaceous and Cenozoic age in the Schwarzwald mining district, SW Germany were chosen to shed light on the origin of their mineralogical diversity. The selection of the veins was guided by the fact that they represent the largest number of veins in the region, are very well known mineralogically and geochemically, and they provide nice examples of barren and mineralized veins of similar age.
