Rapid evaluation of oxidised fatty acid concentration in virgin olive oil using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and multiple linear regression

2011

Abstract Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), followed by multivariate treatment of spectral data, was used to evaluate the oxidised fatty acid (OFA) concentration in virgin olive oil samples characterised by different oxidative status. The entire FTIR spectra (4000–700 cm−1) of oils were divided in 25 wavelength regions. The normalised absorbances of the peak areas within these regions were used as predictors. In order to predict the OFA concentration, multiple linear regression (MLR) models were performed. After a cube root transformation of data, an MLR model constructed using eight predictors was able to predict OFA concentration with an average error of 17%. The main wavelen…

The chemistry of death--Adipocere degradation in modern graveyards.

2015

The formation of adipocere slows further decomposition and preserves corpses for decades or even centuries. This resistance to degradation is a serious problem, especially with regard to the reuse of graves after regular resting times. We present results from an exhumation series in modern graveyards where coffins from water-saturated earth graves contained adipocere embedded in black humic material after resting times of about 30 years. Based on the assumption that this humic material resulted from in situ degradation of adipocere, its presence contradicts the commonly held opinion that adipocere decomposition only occurs under aerobic conditions. To test our hypothesis, we collected black…

A Deeper Insight into the Postpolymerization Modification of Polypenta Fluorophenyl Methacrylates to Poly(N -(2-Hydroxypropyl) Methacrylamide)

2014

This work provides a detailed insight into the synthesis of N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA) polymers employing the activated ester approach. In this approach, polypenta fluorophenyl methacrylate (PFPMA)-activated ester polymers are synthesized by the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and transferred into HPMA-based systems by the use of 2-hydroxypropylamine. To prove quantitative conversion in the absence of side reactions, special attention is devoted to investigate different reaction conditions by different analytical methods ((1) H, (19) F, inverse-gated (13) C NMR, and zeta potential measurements). Furthermore the influence of common solvent…

Conformational studies of hexapeptides containing two dehydroamino acid residues in positions 2 and 5 in peptide chain

2008

Conformational preferences of a group of hexapeptides containing two dehydroamino acid residues in Positions 2 and 5 in peptide chain were investigated by means of spectroscopic methods (NMR and CD) and theoretical calculations. In the case of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution, only peptide with free N-termini adopted rigid 310-helical conformation, for the rest of examined peptides extended and “zig-zag” conformers were predominant. CD measurements showed that only in chloroform solution the conformational freedom of investigated peptides was restricted. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biopolymers 89: 691–699, 2008. This article was originally published online as an accepted preprint. The “…

Block and graft copolymers of 2-oxazolines

1994

The cationic ring-opening polymerization of 2-oxazolines is known to be initiated by alkyl halides, Lewis acids and esters of strong acids. The polymerization proceeds by a living mechanism. Numerous block and graft copolymers have already been described. Recently it was found that chloroformates (R-O-CO-CI) are also useful initiators. The mechanism of the initiation and propagation is discussed. This type of initiators allows the synthesis of different novel two-block and three-block copolymers, star-shape polymers, and a graft copolymer with a polyvinylacetate backbone.

P-chirogenic organocatalysts: application to the aza-Morita–Baylis–Hillman (aza-MBH) reaction of ketimines

2013

The P-chirogenic organocatalysts were found to promote the enantioselective aza-Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction of ketimines derived from acyclic α-keto esters. In the P-chirogenic organocatalyzed aza-MBH reactions, α,α-disubstituted α-amino acid derivatives were obtained in high yields with high enantioselectivities (up to 97% ee).

Determining sulfur-containing amino acids by capillary electrophoresis: A fast novel method for total homocyst(e)ine human plasma

1999

A high-performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE) method based on laser-induced fluorescence detection is presented here. It enables the determination of sulfur-containing amino acids within 15 min. Fluorescence of sulfur-containing amino acids in plasma is linear over a range of 50-150 micromol/L for L-methionine, 5-100 micromol/L for L-homocysteine, and 50-200 micromol/L for L-cysteine. For homocysteine, we were able to detect 1 fmol injected, equivalent to a plasma concentration of 10 nmol/L. A similar sensitivity is present for cysteine, an even lower one being found for methionine. The intra- and interassay relative standard deviations are < 1%. High-performance liquid chromatography…

(Co-)solvent selection for single-wall carbon nanotubes: best solvents, acids, superacids and guest-host inclusion complexes.

2011

Analysis of 1-octanol-water, cyclohexane-water and chloroform (CHCl(3))-water partition coefficients P(o-ch-cf) allows calculation of molecular lipophilicity patterns, which show that for a given atom log P(o-ch-cf) is sensitive to the presence of functional groups. Program CDHI does not properly differentiate between non-equivalent atoms. The most abundant single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT), (10,10), presents a relatively small aqueous solubility and large elementary polarizability, P(o-ch-cf) and kinetic stability. The SWNT solubility is studied in various solvents, finding a class of non-hydrogen-bonding Lewis bases with good solubility. Solvents group into three classes. The SWNTs in so…

Regio- and diastereoselective fluorination of alicyclic β-amino acids.

2011

A regio- and stereoselective approach to fluorinated β-aminocyclohexene or cyclohexane esters has been developed, starting from a bicyclic β-lactam (1). The procedure involves six or seven steps, based on regio- and stereoselective iodolactonization, lactone opening and hydroxy–fluorine exchange. The method has been extended to the synthesis of fluorinated amino ester enantiomers.

Molecular characterization of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide derivatives as potential self-assembling copolymers forming polymeric micelles

2003

A family of graft copolymers derivatives obtained from α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) have been studied as potential self-assembling macromolecules forming stable polymeric micelles at low critical micellar concentration. These polymers are obtained grafting on PHEA poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (Mw 5000 g/mol) (PHEA–PEG), hexadecylamine (PHEA–C16) or both moieties (PHEA–PEG–C16). The PHEA derivatives were characterised by a multi-angle light scattering (MALS) photometer on line to a size exclusion chromatography system in obtaining the molar mass distribution of the polymers. In addition, to investigate the capacity to form micellar aggregates in aqueous medium the MALS pho…
