Children’s Engagement with Mathematics in Kindergarten Mediated by the Use of Digital Tools
2013
The purpose of this chapter is to study children’s engagement with mathematics in kindergarten mediated by digital tools within the context of interactive whiteboard (IWB). Our study reports from a research project aiming at analysing in what ways digital tools may nurture children’s appropriation processes relative to mathematics. In adopting a sociocultural perspective on learning and development, observations together with video recordings have been analysed. Our study shows that the children make sense of the digital tools and are able to apply the tools purposefully due to the interaction with an adult within the zone of proximal development (ZPD). The children externalise their reason…
2012
This article deals with the series of re-appripriation and re-editing of twe single images produced by the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War: the one representing the execution of the statue of Christ at the Hill of Angels at the end of July-beginning of August 1936, and the one depicting the desecration of the mumies of nuns taken in Barcelona the same month. Both in photography and in film support were the object of propaganda purposes from the Francoist side and even they appeared in Nazi and Italian Fascist footage. The chapter traces its transformation until the present.
The object-tool duality in mathematical modelling. A framework to analyze students’ appropriation of Sankey diagrams to model dynamic processes
2020
Students often do not experience the relevance of learning mathematics. This paper reports on an exploratory case study, in which a class of grade 8 students (n=35) was introduced to Sankey diagrams. The aim was to explore to what extent these students could appropriate Sankey diagrams, meaning: they could describe these as objects in themselves and they could use them to model and visualize phenomena relevant to them. Based on Cultural-Historical Activity Theory, we developed an analytical construct defined as the object-tool duality, coordinating mathematics as a set of objects and as a set of tools. The analysis of students’ answers showed that they could use these diagrams as tools to v…
Everyday Appropriations of Information Technology: A Study of Creative Uses of Digital Cameras
2011
Repurposive appropriation is a creative everyday act in which a user invents a novel use for information technology (IT) and adopts it. This study is the first to address its prevalence and predictability in the consumer IT context. In all, 2,379 respondents filled in an online questionnaire on creative uses of digital cameras, such as using them as scanners, periscopes, and storage media. The data reveal that such creative uses are adopted by about half of the users, on average, across different demographic backgrounds. Discovery of a creative use on one's own is slightly more common than is learning it from others. Most users discover the creative uses either completely on their own or wh…
Mathematical Learning Opportunities in Kindergarten through the Use of Digital Tools: Affordances and Constraints
2013
Accepted version of an article in the journal: Nordic Journal of Digital Literacy. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/dk/2013/03/mathematical_learning_opportunities_in_kindergarten_through This study aims at scrutinising the mathematical learning opportunities of children engaging with digital tools and the emerging affordances and constraints faced in such settings. By adopting a sociocultural perspective on learning and development, the multimodal analysis of the adult-child interaction shows that the children are participants in processes of appropriating the mathematical concepts of sorting and counting. Affordances are taken advantage of by the adults and cons…
Analysis of the appropriation of a connected object : an experiential and dimensional approach
2022
The evolution and interactivity of connected objects promise a continuous improvement of the consumer experience, especially through the adaptation of the object and the development of its functionalities. But in some cases, the evolving nature of the object can lead to a situation where the user has to reappropriate it. Through a netnography and an analysis of life stories, this research studies the appropriation process in a dynamic way.The main contribution of this research is the identification of two dimensions (social and situational) and four forms of appropriation : autotelic, instrumental, individual and collective, which we bring closer to Lanier and Rader's (2015) measure of expe…
The pre-appropriation of controlling tools : the role of the enabling management
2022
The appropriation of controlling tools is a theme that has been widely addressed research in management over the last twenty years (De Vaujany, 2005, 2006; Carton et al., 2006; Grimand, 2006, 2012, Quemener and Fimbel, 2012; Bessire et al., 2012; Bédé et al., 2012; Bernard, 2019, Couleau-Dupont, 2010, ...). This research has mobilised various theoretical frameworks and methodologies. Some mobilise the theory of appropriation proposed by De Vaujany (2005), some others use theoretical frameworks from other disciplines, such as legitimacy (Suchman, 1995), regulation theory (Reynaud, 1979) or even neo-institutional theory (Di Maggio and Powell, 1991). The literature does not propose a single fr…
Facilitating socio-cognitive and socio-emotional monitoring in collaborative learning with a regulation macro script – an exploratory study
2017
This study examines student teachers’ collaborative learning by focusing on socio-cognitive and socio-emotional monitoring processes during more and less active script discussions as well as the near transfer of monitoring activities in the subsequent task work. The participants of this study were teacher education students whose collaborative learning was supported with a designed regulation macro script during a six weeks environmental science course. The script divided the group work into three phases, namely: the orientation phase, intermediate phase, and reflection phase. The script was put in use by prompting questions that were delivered to the students on tablets. Question prompts i…
Scripting as a pedagogical method to guide collaborative writing : university students' reflections
2020
A collaboration script is a set of instructions used to improve collaborative learning among students in technology-enhanced environments. Previously, university students’ perspective has been under-represented in the study on collaboration scripts. In this article, we focus on understanding students’ experiences in a scripted collaborative writing task, especially from the perspective of following the script. The study was conducted among undergraduate students (N = 91) taking a master-level educational science course at one university each in Finland and Belgium. Divided into 25 groups, each with three to five members, the students worked on collaborative writing tasks. During their share…
