Perspectives for CNO neutrino detection in Borexino

International audience; Borexino measured with unprecedented accuracy the fluxes of solar neutrinos emitted at all the steps of the pp fusion chain. Still missing is the measurement of the flux of neutrinos produced in the CNO cycle. A positive measurement of the CNO neutrino flux is of fundamental importance for understanding the evolution of stars and addressing the unresolved controversy on the solar abundances. The measurement of the CNO neutrino flux in Borexino is challenging because of the low intensity of this component (CNO cycle accounts for about 1% of the energy emitted by Sun), the lack of prominent spectral features and the presence of background sources. Searching for New Physics in two-neutrino double beta decay with CUPID

Abstract In the past few years, attention has been drawn to the fact that a precision analysis of two-neutrino double beta decay (2υββ) allows the study of interesting physics cases like the emission of Majoron bosons and possible Lorentz symmetry violation. These processes modify the summed-energy distribution of the two electrons emitted in 2υββ. CUPID is a next-generation experiment aiming to exploit 100Mo-enriched scintillating Li2MoO4 crystals, operating as cryogenic calorimeters. Flow cytometry diagnosis in myelodysplastic syndrome: Current practice in Latin America and comparison with other regions of the world

Background: Flow cytometry (FC) is a valuable tool for the diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). We present results of a survey carried out to evaluate FC current practice for MDS diagnosis in Latin America (LA), focusing on markers used and characteristics of the clinical diagnostic report. Compliance to IMDSflow recommendations was also evaluated. These practices were then compared with those used in other countries. Methods: An online survey was sent through the Grupo Latino-Americano de Mielodisplasia to LA cytometrists and other international scientific societies. Recent advances in on-line liquid chromatography - infrared spectrometry (LC-IR)

We review advances in isocratic and gradient liquid chromatography hyphenated on-line with infrared spectrometry (LC-IR). We place special emphasis on chemometric background correction and other applications of chemometric algorithms used to improve the sensitivity and the resolution of LC-IR signals. We also comment on recent technical advances, (e.g., dedicated flow-cells and new light sources) and review applications in the technological, cosmetics, environmental and food sectors.

Application of point-to-point matching algorithms for background correction in on-line liquid chromatography–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry …

A new background correction method for the on-line coupling of gradient liquid chromatography and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry has been developed. It is based on the use of a point-to-point matching algorithm that compares the absorption spectra of the sample data set with those of a previously recorded reference data set in order to select an appropriate reference spectrum. The spectral range used for the point-to-point comparison is selected with minimal user-interaction, thus facilitating considerably the application of the whole method. In this work, it has been extended to methanol:water mobile phases, the use of a background correction method for on-line LC-FTIR measurements named Univariate background correction based on the use of a reference spectra matrix (UBC-RSM) and absorbance ratios. It permits to overcome the problem related to spectral changes occurring during the gradient elution, which in the past limited the on-line coupling of LC and FTIR to isocratic elutions. Antennas for the detection of radio emission pulses from cosmic-ray induced air showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory.

The Pierre Auger Observatory is exploring the potential of the radio detection technique to study extensive air showers induced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) addresses both technological and scientific aspects of the radio technique. A first phase of AERA has been operating since September 2010 with detector stations observing radio signals at frequencies between 30 and 80 MHz. A commentary on the Special Issue “Innovations in measuring and fostering mathematical modelling competencies”

This is a commentary on the ESM 2021 Special Issue on Innovations in Measuring and Fostering Mathematical Modelling Competencies. We have grouped the ten studies into three themes: competencies, fostering, and measuring. The first theme and the papers therein provide a platform to discuss the cognitivist backgrounds to the different conceptualizations of mathematical modelling competencies, based on the modelling cycle. We suggest theoretical widening through a competence continuum and enriching of the modelling cycle with overarching, analytic dimensions for creativity, tool use, metacognition, and so forth.
