Interpersonal Recognition and Responsiveness to Relevant Differences
2006
Abstract This essay defends a three‐dimensional response‐model theory of recognition of persons, and discusses the related phenomenon of recognition of reasons, values and principles. The theory is three‐dimensional in endorsing recognition of the equality of persons and two kinds of relevant differences: merits and special relationships. It defends a ‘response‐model’ which holds that adequacy of recognition of persons is a matter of adequate responsiveness to situation‐specific reasons and requirements. This three‐dimensional response‐model is compared to Peter Jones’s view, which draws the distinction between status and merit recognition, and mediated and unmediated recognition. The essay…
The Rhetoric and Relevance of IS Research Paradigms: Conceptual Foundations and Empirical Evidence
2006
This paper discusses the relevance of IS research with respect to the rhetoric associated with the three major IS research paradigms in use - positivism, constructivism/interpretivism and critical research. The conceptual discussion is framed in terms of the following dimensions: ontological, epistemological and methodological assumptions, relationship between theory and practice, and the role of the researcher in the research process. Based on this discussion, we propose a conceptual model to study the relationship between the espoused philosophical assumptions of researchers and the degree of relevance of researchers’ knowledge claims. This conceptual model was evaluated with data obtaine…
Toward a Political Theory of the Sublime
2018
In this chapter, the author develops a topic undertheorized in Bourdieu’s work: physical violence. He presents the key points of an esthetic theory of the sublime and develops an alternative theory of the sublime, which draws on structural constructivism and Taoist political theory. In contrast to an esthetic theory of the sublime that automatically attributes to exceptional and violent physical actions ontological superiority and performative efficiency compared to the ‘weak’ routines of the ontic Lebenswelt, in a structural constructivist theory the key to the sublime as a defining moment of politics can be found in the links between physical events and symbolic structures. According to t…
Eritrean teachers' perceptions of learner-centred interactive pedagogy
2021
In most sub-Saharan African countries, mainstreaming learner-centred interactive pedagogy (LCIP) is defined as a policy priority. Similarly, Eritrea has adopted the same policy to seek a solution to its educational challenges. Rather than rote mastery of course content, the LCIP approach prioritises learners in constructing knowledge through interaction, active participation and controlling the learning process. This paper explores secondary school teachers' perceptions of LCIP and their challenges in implementing this pedagogical approach. Constructivism and sociocultural learning theory are considered conceptual frameworks to highlight LCIP as an approach for teaching and learning. Qualit…
El monumento a la III Internacional de Vladimir Tatlin. Antecedentes iconográficos
1990
EL MONUMENTO A LA III INTERNACIONAL, OBRA MAESTRA DEL CONSTRUCTIVISMO RUSO, NO ES MAS QUE UNA UTOPIA, UNA MONTAÑA SIMBOLICA CON UNA DOBLE ESPIRAL, PARECIDA A VARIAS OBRAS DE LA ANTIGÜEDAD EN LAS QUE ESTA INSPIRADA. ADEMAS, EL MOVIMIENTO SE RELACIONA CON LA IDEA DE TIEMPO, VINCULADO A LOS MOVIMIENTOS CELESTES, COMO EN LAS TEORIAS ALQUIMICAS (A.B.C./ L.A.G.)
Interactive Learning Environments (ILEs) as Effective Tools for Teaching Social Sciences
2016
Schoolteachers could enhance learning in social science courses by using teaching tools that favour a methodological approach focused on the topics' basic structure rather than on facts. An innovative system dynamics social-based ILE built with a social constructivist approach is presented here. The pedagogical futures of this ILE are then analysed. The effective impact of different instructional approaches inspired by social-based ILEs on student learning outcomes is also discussed. The ILE and the related inquiry-based instructional approach seem to help students understand fundamental concepts more easily, thus making the topic more comprehensible and helping students place the social fa…
2017
. Some legal scholars draw a clear line between law and legal knowledge. Following Norberto Bobbio, we can call them “law’s guardians”. Conversely, others – Bobbio calls them “law’s creators” – almost neglect the relevance of the border which separates law and legal knowledge. The distinction between “guardians” and “creators” captures something relevant about jurists’ style in different historical periods and contexts. Nevertheless, it would be a clear mistake to treat this distinction as a conceptual or a substantive one. Even the “guardians model” of legal knowledge is grounded on ideological assumptions; as a consequence, the scholars which refer themselves to this model cannot avoid to…
Some arguments supporting an interpretative approach to legal knowledge
2014
