The Economic Value of Creativity: How Much, for Whom, and What for?

2017

The following chapter deals with the value od creativity in media management. The first part is a literature-based reflection on different perspectives on the value of creativity. While creativity generally is considered a core value of media products, I will argue that not all aspects of creativity are equally economically valuable and, thus, it is not in the best interest of media managers to maximize creative value. I will then change perspectives and address the question of the value of creativity for the individual media worker. The second part of this chapter combines the perspectives of the predominantly economically oriented media managers with that of the predominantly culturally o…

Teachers as writing students: narratives of professional development in a leisure-time creative writing community

2022

The authors explored five in-service teachers’ experiences of professional development (PD) in Studies in Writing (30 ECTS programme at a Finnish open university) they participated in during their leisure time. Data consist of the teachers’ creative writings and semi-structured interviews. Reflexive thematic analysis was employed to holistically determine how the participants associated the creative writing community with their PD. The following themes were created: (1) Me as a writer, (2) Teaching and pedagogy, and (3) Writing and emotions. To illustrate these findings, three creative narratives were composed based on data excerpts. These ethnodramatic dialogues gave voice to the teachers’…

Sommitellut muusat : rituaali ja leikki luovan kirjoittamisen prosesseissa ja kirjoittajaryhmän toimissa

2020

To write is a complex, delicate and intense act. The goal of this study has been to find out what the process of creative writing looks like when viewed through the concepts of ritual and play. I have engaged with creative writing research, research on ritual and play, and new materialist philosophy. Research data has been formed by ethnographic methods in a writing group as well as my own creative work. I have applied ritual and play to create writing prompts and creative writing methods. The ethnographic data consists of personal and group interviews of creative writers. The personal interviews shed light on what kind of rituals, habits, feelings and sensations the writers observe in thei…

Translingual and translocal perspectives on writing : An introduction

2022

This special issue has been inspired by presentations and discussions which took place during the first workshop of our  NOS-HS research network ‘The Politics and Ideologies of Multilingual Writing’ (Stockholm University, 27-28 May 2021). In this issue, we explore translingual and translocal perspectives, zooming in on various aspects of writing, from its legitimacy to its localities. Our focus is on writing for publication by authors with multilingual repertoires and/or working in multilingual settings. Unlike previous research, which focused on academic, journalistic, and creative writing as separate domains, we aim to bring together researchers working in different subfields of linguisti…

Public libraries, literary art activities and social inclusion

2019

This paper focuses on literary art activities in public libraries. The aim is to stimulate discussion on how literary art activities can promote socially sustainable development, a sense of community, and social inclusion. In Finland, public libraries organise low-threshold literary art activities that encourage both written and verbal expression, e.g. literary art clubs, rap and comics workshops, and creative writing groups. Literary art activities provide opportunities for the improvement of literacy, self-expression and social readiness, and the strengthening of self-esteem and identity. Moreover, they can promote community spirit. Libraries respond to current societal challenges and the…

"Write in English on your notebook" : analysis of creative writing exercises in a Finnish EFL workbook

2016

Vaikka luovalla kirjoittamisella on tutkittu olevan paljon etuja vieraan ja toisen kielen oppimisessa, Perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman perusteet (2004) ei tarjoa täsmällisiä ohjeita luovan kirjoittamisen opetukseen englannin kielen oppiaineessa. Täten luovan kirjoittamisen tehtävien suunnittelu on opettajien ja oppimateriaalien valmistajien vastuulla. Oppikirjat ovat edelleen hyvin laajasti käytettyjä oppimateriaaleja, joten niiden tutkiminen tarjoaa tietoa myös opetuksesta yleensä. Tutkielman päämääränä on selvittää luovan kirjoittamisen tehtävien esiintymistä yhdessä suomalaisessa englannin kielen tehtäväkirjassa. Tätä tutkittiin kahden tutkimuskysymyksen avulla, joista ensimmäinen kosk…

Dienasgrāmatu rakstīšana 7. klasē skolēnu rakstītprasmes uzlabošanai

2017
