Polymorphonuclear neutrophil granulocytes (neutrophils) are tightly controlled by an incompletely understood homeostatic feedback loop adjusting the marrow's supply to peripheral needs. Although it has long been known that marrow cellularity is inversely correlated with G-CSF levels, the mechanism linking peripheral clearance to production remains unknown. SummaryInteractions of adult neural stem cells (NSCs) with supportive vasculature appear critical for their maintenance and function, although the molecular details are still under investigation. Neurotrophin (NT)-3 belongs to the NT family of trophic factors, best known for their effects in promoting neuronal survival. Here we show that NT-3 produced and secreted by endothelial cells of brain and choroid plexus capillaries is required for the quiescence and long-term maintenance of NSCs in the mouse subependymal niche. Age-dependent changes in the transcription profile of long-lived Drosophila over-expressing glutamate cysteine ligase

Abstract In our prior studies ( Orr et al., 2005 ) we achieved a 30–50% increase in the life span of Drosophila by manipulating glutathione (GSH) production in neuronal tissues, through over-expression of glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCL), a key enzyme in glutathione biosynthesis. In the present study, we identified gene response patterns from which plausible mechanisms responsible for the observed effects on life span might be inferred. PSA Depletion Induces the Differentiation of Immature Neurons in the Piriform Cortex of Adult Mice

Immature neurons are maintained in cortical regions of the adult mammalian brain. In rodents, many of these immature neurons can be identified in the piriform cortex based on their high expression of early neuronal markers, such as doublecortin (DCX) and the polysialylated form of the neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM). This molecule plays critical roles in different neurodevelopmental events.
