Supporting teachers' needs within and through E-learning systems

2014

These days more and more digital learning and teaching opportunities emerge into the world of higher education. In this upcoming project which is described in this paper, the teachers' needs, especially their teaching motivation will be regarded. This project is part of a bigger project, where several different faculties will work together. This combination of faculties is beneficial for topics like these, because the approach combines pedagogical and technical knowledge. This topic regarding teachers' needs deals with the initial and ongoing motivation as well as behavior and attitudes toward current or upcoming ICT systems for education. The main aspect of the project is to specify issues…

E-Learning for widening participation in higher education

2014

The purpose of this chapter is to conceptualize e-learning as a socio-cultural ecological system and to explore the empirical evidences of the objective and subjective conditions for using this concept in practice for increasing the participation in higher education. The components of this new concept are a systemic-constructivist competence, pedagogical leadership, life- and workforce learning, and self-evaluation. The objective conditions for its implementation are the integration of informal knowledge of information and communication technologies, implementing pedagogical leadership in tandems for developing students' intrapreneurship, self-evaluation, and self-enhancement. The subjectiv…

An exploratory case study of interactive simulation for teaching Ecology

2016

This paper explores the effectiveness of interactive simulation for teaching a selected complex subject, Ecology, in higher education. Specifically, we carry out a lab intervention using interactive agent based simulation, to teach the complex concept of spatially-explicit predator prey interaction to undergraduate students of an advanced module: BIOU9CE (Community Ecology & Conservation Applications) at the University of Stirling. We propose use of Netlogo, an interactive agent-based simulation tool, and evaluate its effectiveness for learning and teaching of interactive simulation developed specifically for the classroom, compared with an existing, less interactive, simulation tool (R).

Ethical and Civic Education and the Social Commitment of University Students

2011

Recent decades have seen growing international concern about the lack of social commitment among young people, shown in their failure to participate in social affairs, scant interest in formal politics, and low turnout at elections.
First, the international framework which forms the background to our paper is outlined. The ethical and civic education which university students receive is discussed, in the context of the social mission of the university and the European Higher Education Area. We then move on to examine one of the most promising initiatives in this field: service learning. We conclude with a proposal containing some suggestions of relevance to higher education. The need …

Computer Mediated Communication and Collaboration in a Virtual Learning Environment Based on a Multi-agent System with Wasp-Like Behavior

2008

In this paper is presented a model for an adaptive multi-agent system for dynamic routing of the grants' activities from a learning environment, based on the adaptive wasp colonies behavior. The agents use wasp task allocation behavior, combined with a model of wasp dominance hierarchy formation. The model we introduced allows the assignment of activities in a grant, taking into account the specialization of students, their experience and the complexity of activities already taken. An adaptive method allows students to enter in the Grant system for the first time. The system is changing dynamic, because both the type of activities and the students involved in the system change. Our approach…

Dispositifs interculturels à distance

2008

In the context of intercultural online communication, certain dimensions of ICT we might call “figures sensibles” (Boutaud 2006) can be critically useful to understand co-construction, especially when these dimensions are also constitutive of an educational context. Thus, transparency, performance and conviviality help us interpret what can be called collaborative online interaction. Dispositive memory thrives on these dimensions and completes them. It explains in part the continuity of socially constructed identity of the community in question. It is the community aspect which in our context imposes itself despite cultural differences.

Virtual communities, research groups and projects on IMS Learning Design. State of the art, key factors and forthcoming challenges

2005

We carry out a report showing the state of the art about virtual communities, research groups and projects focused on the e-learning specification IMS Learning Design or directly related to it. This specification is currently becoming the most flexible and supported de facto standard for modelling full learning processes, as a complement for any structure of educational contents. Afterwards, as a consequence of the previous study, we develop a reading and a further analysis of the current panorama, and describe the key factors that show the relevance and impact of IMS Learning Design and also the main forthcoming challenges.

Aplicación de la evaluación On-line en asignaturas de contenido morfológico

2016

[EN] The use of active participatory methodologies and therefore the students, practical content attribute meanings and encourage student participation. Allows commitment to the construction of implicating knowledge in the use of materials of initiation provided and designed by teachers but students independently, both individually and collectively, will be expanded and completing then move to a forum such documents and comments tutorial for feedback and participation are drawn directly. This material if necessary be completed, but this possible expansion will be made after public exposure in the classroom and to all colleagues. So the work is evaluated by the collective student-teachers (a…

La metodología ApS refuerza la adquisición de competencias generales y específicas

2019

[EN] Service-learning (SL), through a process of action-reflection-action collaborates in an efficient and practical way to the consolidation of basic and specific competencies that contribute to a successful life and good social functioning. The aim of the work is to analyse how the SL methodology improves general and specific competences in the students. To this end, two experimental groups were formed: a) SL group; b) NO-SL group (control). Each of the groups was evaluated in specific competences (exploration of cranial pairs) and general competences (communication, adaptation,..). The results were compared using the t-Student test. The results showed that the SL group significantly impr…
