Laser-driven quantum magnonics and terahertz dynamics of the order parameter in antiferromagnets
2017
The impulsive generation of two-magnon modes in antiferromagnets by femtosecond optical pulses, so-called femto-nanomagnons, leads to coherent longitudinal oscillations of the antiferromagnetic order parameter that cannot be described by a thermodynamic Landau-Lifshitz approach. We argue that this dynamics is triggered as a result of a laser-induced modification of the exchange interaction. In order to describe the oscillations we have formulated a quantum mechanical description in terms of magnon pair operators and coherent states. Such an approach allowed us to} derive an effective macroscopic equation of motion for the temporal evolution of the antiferromagnetic order parameter. An impli…
Complex temperature dependence of coupling and dissipation of cavity magnon polaritons from millikelvin to room temperature
2018
Hybridized magnonic-photonic systems are key components for future information processing technologies such as storage, manipulation or conversion of data both in the classical (mostly at room temperature) and quantum (cryogenic) regime. In this work, we investigate a YIG sphere coupled strongly to a microwave cavity over the full temperature range from $290\,\mathrm{K}$ down to $30\,\mathrm{mK}$. The cavity-magnon polaritons are studied from the classical to the quantum regime where the thermal energy is less than one resonant microwave quanta, i.e. at temperatures below $1\,\mathrm{K}$. We compare the temperature dependence of the coupling strength $g_{\rm{eff}}(T)$, describing the streng…
Dephasing of orbital and spin degrees of freedom in semiconductor quantum dots due to phonons and magnons
2006
Phonon-induced decoherence of orbital degrees of freedom in quantum dots (QDs) (GaAs/InAs) is studied and the relevant time-scales are estimated versus dot dimension. Dephasing of excitons due to acoustic phonons and optical phonons, including enhancement of the effective Frohlich constant caused by localization, is assessed for the state-of-art QDs. Temporal inefficiency of Pauli blocking in QDs due to lattice inertia is additionally predicted. For QD placed in a diluted magnetic semiconductor medium a magnon induced dephasing of spin is estimated in accordance with experimental results for Zn(Mn)Se/CdSe. (© 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Giant enhancement to spin battery effect in superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator systems
2021
We develop a theory of the spin battery effect in superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator (SC/FI) systems taking into account the magnetic proximity effect. We demonstrate that the spin-energy mixing enabled by the superconductivity leads to the enhancement of spin accumulation by several orders of magnitude relative to the normal state. This finding can explain the recently observed giant inverse spin Hall effect generated by thermal magnons in the SC/FI system. We suggest a nonlocal electrical detection scheme which can directly probe the spin accumulation driven by the magnetization dynamics. We predict a giant Seebeck effect converting the magnon temperature bias into the nonlocal voltag…
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Nd2Fe14B and Y2Fe14B single crystals
1992
Abstract Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been carried out on Nd 2 Fe 14 B and Y 2 Fe 14 B single crystals. Temperature dependent acoustic magnon dispersion curves have been found along the high-symmetry directions [0,0,1] and [1,0,0] with a gap at (0,0,2). Soft mode behaviour at spin wave vector q = 0 was observed for Nd 2 Fe 14 B near the spin reorientation temperature. The inelastic scattering intensity decreases steeply for larger q . Therefore, the dispersion curves could be measured until the middle of the Brillouin zone only. The experimental results are discussed in the frame of a classical spin wave model.
Ultrafast amplification and non-linear magneto-elastic coupling of coherent magnon modes in an antiferromagnet
2021
We investigate the role of domain walls in the ultrafast magnon dynamics of an antiferromagnetic NiO single crystal in a pump-probe experiment with variable pump photon energy. Analysing the amplitude of the energy-dependent photo-induced ultrafast spin dynamics, we detect a yet unreported coupling between the material's characteristic THz- and a GHz-magnon modes. We explain this unexpected coupling between two orthogonal eigenstates of the corresponding Hamiltonian by modelling the magneto-elastic interaction between spins in different domains. We find that such interaction, in the non-linear regime, couples the two different magnon modes via the domain walls and it can be optically exploi…
Direct observation of coherent magnons with suboptical wavelengths in a single crystalline ferrimagnetic insulator
2019
In the field of magnetism, spin waves are a subject of great interest for fundamental and application-oriented research. Time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, a technique that allows for direct spin-wave imaging below the optical resolution limit, is usually limited to thin layers deposited on x-ray transparent membranes. Here, the authors report on a preparation routine that makes single-crystalline materials accessible to this powerful technique. The latter is subsequently implemented on the ferrimagnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet, where spin waves down to 100-nm wavelength are observed.
Propagation Length of Antiferromagnetic Magnons Governed by Domain Configurations.
2019
Spintronics seeks to functionalize antiferromagnetic materials to develop memory and logic devices operating at terahertz speed and robust against external magnetic field perturbations. To be useful, such functionality needs to be developed in thin film devices. The key functionality of long-distance spin-transport has, however, so far only been reported in bulk single crystal antiferromagnets, while in thin films, transport has so far been limited to a few nanometers. In this work, we electrically achieve a long-distance propagation of spin-information in thin films of the insulating antiferromagnet hematite. Through transport and magnetic imaging, we demonstrate a strong correlation betwe…
Nanoscale X-Ray Imaging of Spin Dynamics in Yttrium Iron Garnet
2019
Time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (TR-STXM) has been used for the direct imaging of spin wave dynamics in thin film yttrium iron garnet (YIG) with spatial resolution in the sub 100 nm range. Application of this x-ray transmission technique to single crystalline garnet films was achieved by extracting a lamella (13x5x0.185 $\mathrm{\mu m^3}$) of liquid phase epitaxy grown YIG thin film out of a gadolinium gallium garnet substrate. Spin waves in the sample were measured along the Damon-Eshbach and backward volume directions of propagation at gigahertz frequencies and with wavelengths in a range between 100~nm and 10~$\mathrm{\mu}$m. The results were compared to theoretical …
Polarisation dependent Raman study of single-crystal nickel oxide
2011
Abstract The magnetic domain structure and Raman scattering have been studied in NiO single-crystals with three different (100), (110) and (111) orientations. Twin-domain structure was observed in NiO(100) and NiO(110) single-crystals using cross-polarized optical microscopy. We found that the ratio of the two-magnon (at 1500 cm−1) to the two-phonon (2LO, at 1100 cm−1) Raman bands intensity is sensitive in a particular way to the type of the twin-domain pattern.
