Couples' Experience of the Decision-Making Process in Breast Reconstruction After Breast Cancer: A Lexical Analysis of Their Discourse

2020

Background One in 3 women with breast cancer will have a mastectomy and face the decision of whether to have breast reconstruction (BR). This decision is shared by the women and their physician, as well as discussed with her partner. Objective This study aimed to understand the decision-making process of BR through a lexical analysis of the women and their partners' discourse. A secondary aim was to identify the differences between the couples when the woman had, or did not have, BR. Methods We conducted semistructured interviews with 9 women, and their partners, who underwent a mastectomy after a first episode of breast cancer. A lexical analysis using IRaMuTeQ software was carried out. Re…

Activity and safety of temozolomide in advanced adrenocortical carcinoma patients

2019

Objective Temozolomide has shown a significant anti-proliferative activity on adrenocortical cancer (ACC) cells in vitro. Design On the basis of these results the drug was prescribed as second/third line in advanced metastatic ACC patients in four referral centers in Italy. Methods We retrospectively collected anagraphic, clinical and pathological data of patients with advanced ACC with disease progression to standard chemotherapy plus mitotane who were treated with temozolomide at the dose of 200 mg/m2/die given for 5 consecutive days every 28 days. The primary endpoint was the disease control rate, defined as objective response or disease stabilization after 3 months. Secondary endpoints…

Centenarians as a model to discover genetic and epigenetic signatures of healthy ageing.

2018

Abstract Centenarians are a model of successful ageing. The data favours the theory that, in order to live to 100, it is mandatory to inherit the right genetic variants from parents or acquire epigenetic variants through the environment. Therefore, the study of epigenetic signatures of healthy ageing is becoming an important aspect to identify the role of chromatin modification in ageing and understand how manage this fine-tuning system. So, according to the concept of developmental plasticity, establishment of a longevity phenotype requires a combination of stochastic and non-stochastic events that modulate the genetic substrate and leads to a different outcome. It can be concluded that ce…

MGMT: Key node in the battle against genotoxicity, carcinogenicity and apoptosis induced by alkylating agents

2007

O(6)-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) plays a crucial role in the defense against alkylating agents that generate, among other lesions, O(6)-alkylguanine in DNA (collectively termed O(6)-alkylating agents [O(6)AA]). The defense is highly important, since O(6)AA are common environmental carcinogens, are formed endogenously during normal cellular metabolism and possibly inflammation, and are being used in cancer therapy. O(6)AA induced DNA damage is subject to repair, which is executed by MGMT, AlkB homologous proteins (ABH) and base excision repair (BER). Although this review focuses on MGMT, the mechanism of repair by ABH and BER will also be discussed. Experimental systems, in wh…

Organocatalytic enantioselective functionalization of indoles in the carbocyclic ring with cyclic imines

2019

[EN] An organocatalytic enantioselective functionalization in the carbocyclic ring of indoles with benzoxathiazine 2,2-dioxides is described using a quinine-derived bifunctional organocatalyst. This aza-Friedel-Crafts reaction provides 4-indolyl, 5-indolyl and 7-indolyl sulfamidate derivatives in good yields (up to 99%) and with moderate to high enantioselectivities (up to 86% ee).

Synthesis and characterisation of pack cemented aluminide coatings on metals

2004

Abstract The exposition of metallic materials to high temperature environments leads to their corrosion because of oxidation or sulphidation. One way to protect such materials is to produce an Al 2 O 3 layer which needs to be continuous enough to limit diffusion of oxygen or metallic elements, and withstand this corrosion. Since a few years, it has been proved that aluminide compounds are one of the most effective materials to achieve this goal. Indeed, they possess sufficient Al and many beneficial mechanical properties when exposed to high temperature conditions to make possible the formation of a protective Al 2 O 3 scale. This study is aimed at the elaboration of iron, nickel and molybd…

Affinity Sensors for the Diagnosis of COVID-19

2021

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was proclaimed a global pandemic in March 2020. Reducing the dissemination rate, in particular by tracking the infected people and their contacts, is the main instrument against infection spreading. Therefore, the creation and implementation of fast, reliable and responsive methods suitable for the diagnosis of COVID-19 are required. These needs can be fulfilled using affinity sensors, which differ in applied detection methods and markers that are generating analytical signals. Recently, nucleic acid hybridization, antigen-antibody interaction, and change of reactive oxyge…

Alkaline treatment as a means to boost the activity of TiO(2)in selective photocatalytic processes

2020

In this work, the activity enhancement of TiO(2)photocatalysts by alkaline treatment has been investigated. Commercial (BDH, U.K., anatase phase) TiO(2)samples, treated in alkaline solutions of NaOH at different concentrations and temperatures, were tested for the photocatalytic partial oxidation of 3-pyridinemethanol in water under UVA irradiation to form vitamin B-3. Photocatalyst characterization has been carried out by XRD, BET, TEM, TGA, photoluminescence, FTIR, Raman, DRS, EPR and photocurrent measurements. The alkaline-treated samples showed an increased activity of up to 7 times (by considering first order rate constant values) compared to untreated BDH and the superior performance …

The effect of the surface disordered layer on the photoreactivity of titania nanoparticles

2017

It is well known that the surface of metal oxide catalysts presents, usually, non-crystalline species containing impurities and low coordinated cations, which are observed in HRTEM images as a disordered layer of amorphous phase. Despite of being these species more accessible and less stable than the crystalline catalysts components, they have been rarely considered when analysing the catalyst activity. In this work, we have studied the effect of a treatment with HCl solution at pH = 0 on the characteristics of the disordered layer in two commercial anatase TiO2 samples, using techniques such as TGA, 1H MAS-NMR and HRTEM, and by determining these sample photocatalytic activity for the 4-nit…

Stable-bond polymeric reversed-phase/weak anion-exchange mixed-mode stationary phases obtained by simultaneous functionalization and crosslinking of …

2019

Abstract A polymeric reversed-phase/weak anion exchange (Poly-RP/WAX) mixed-mode stationary phase has been prepared by coating of a poly(3-mercaptopropyl)methylsiloxane film on vinyl-modified silica (100 A, 5 μm) and simultaneous in situ functionalization with N-(10-undecenoyl)-3-aminoquinuclidine as well as crosslinking to the vinyl silica surface by solventless thiol-ene double click reaction. Such bonding chemistry showed greatly enhanced stability compared to brush-type analogs with bifunctional siloxane bonding to silica. Solid-state 29Si-CP/MAS NMR confirmed the immobilization of the siloxane layer. pH-Dependent ζ-potential determinations revealed a high anion-exchange capacity over t…
