A fluorinated 2D magnetic coordination polymer

2021

Herein we show the versatility of coordination chemistry to design and expand a family of 2D materials by incorporating F groups at the surface of the layers. Through the use of a prefuntionalized organic linker with F groups, it is possible to achieve a layered magnetic material based on Fe(ii) centers that are chemically stable in open air, contrary to the known 2D inorganic magnetic materials. The high quality of the single crystals and their robustness allow to fabricate 2D molecular materials by micromechanical exfoliation, preserving the crystalline nature of these layers together with the desired functionalization.

Conformation of Polyethylene Glycol inside Confined Space: Simulation and Experimental Approaches

2021

The modification of the inner nanopore wall by polymers is currently used to change the specific properties of the nanosystem. Among them, the polyethylene glycol (PEG) is the most used to prevent the fouling and ensure the wettability. However, its properties depend mainly on the chain structure that is very difficult to estimate inside this confined space. Combining experimental and simulation approaches, we provide an insight to the consequence of the PEG presence inside the nanopore on the nanopore properties. We show, in particular, that the cation type in the electrolyte, together with the type of electrolyte (water or urea), is at the origin of the ion transport modification in the n…

Biologizing titanium alloy implant material with morphogenetically active polyphosphate

2015

As a further step towards a new generation of bone implant materials, we developed a procedure for biological functionalization of titanium alloy surfaces with inorganic calcium polyphosphate (Ca-polyP). This polymer has been demonstrated to exhibit morphogenetic activity. The coating of titanium oxidized Ti-6Al-4V scaffolds with biologically active amorphous Ca-polyP microparticles is formed by Ca2+ ion bridges to the silane coupling agent APTMS. This surface is durable and stable as an almost homogeneous Ca-polyP layer onto the metal. The homogenously coated Ca-polyP titanium scaffold was found to be biologically active and supported the growth and functional activity of bone cell-related…

Fabrication of a Silica Coating on Magnetic γ-Fe2O3 Nanoparticles by an Immobilized Enzyme

2008

Silicatein, a hydrolytic protein encountered in marine sponges, was immobilized on maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles that were surface functionalized with a reactive mulfunctional polymer. This polymer carries an anchor group based on dopamine which is capable of binding to the γ-Fe2O3 surface and a reactive functional group which allows binding of various biomolecules onto inorganic nanoparticles. This functional nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) group allows immobilization of His-tagged silicatein on the surface of the γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The surface-bound protein retains its native hydrolytic activity to catalyze formation of silica through copolymerization of alkoxysilanes Si(OR)4. Functio…

Chemical modification of Topaz surfaces

1999

In chemisorption, one is typically faced with the problem that the two-dimensional structure of the organic layer does not match the structure of the inorganic substrate. This work describes the first steps toward an induced epitaxial correlation of organic compounds on an inorganic surface. The idea of this work was to use a single crystal with a two-dimensional surface structure, Topaz (001), that matches an alkyl chain lattice better than existing substrates. X-ray reflectivity and FTIR experiments prove the surface modification of the Topaz, which is probably an etherification of the reactive OH-groups on the Topaz (001) surface.

Liquid crystalline phases from polymer functionalized ferri-magnetic Fe3O4nanorods

2017

Here, we present the surface functionalization of anisotropic in form ferri-magnetic Fe3O4-nanorods (NRs) with a diblock copolymer, having a PMMA- or PDEGMEMA-block, for solubilization, and a dopamine anchor block. These polymers were synthesized through RAFT polymerization via a macro-initiator approach. The successful surface functionalization, performed via a grafting-to method, was monitored using TGA, IR and TEM measurements. The NRs were very soluble in organic solvents after functionalization. Afterwards, the liquid crystalline (LC) behavior was investigated. During solvent evaporation, birefringent domains were formed. The self-assembly into lyotropic LC structures could be observed…

Synthesis of Processable Inorganic‐Organic Hybrid Polymers Based on Poly(silsesquioxanes): Grafting from Polymerization Using ATRP

2008

Inorganic-organic hybrid polymers have been synthesized utilizing atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from a functionalized poly(methylsilsesquioxane) (PMSSQ) macroinitiator. Different polymeric ATRP initiators were prepared by co-condensation of functionalized trichlorosilanes with methyltrimethoxysilane. Various vinyl monomers have been successfully grafted from these macroinitiators, demonstrating a highly variable synthetic concept, which offers the chance to synthesize a wide spectrum of inorganic-organic hybrid polymers. All synthesized polymers were soluble in various organic solvents. Spin-coating these hybrid materials onto various substrates could produce stable and adhere…

Glycopolymer Functionalization of Engineered Spider Silk Protein-based Materials for Improved Cell Adhesion

2014

Silk protein-based materials are promising biomaterials for application as tissue scaffolds, due to their processability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The preparation of films composed of an engineered spider silk protein (eADF4(C16)) and their functionalization with glycopolymers are described. The glycopolymers bind proteins found in the extracellular matrix, providing a biomimetic coating on the films that improves cell adhesion to the surfaces of engineered spider silk films. Such silk-based materials have potential as coatings for degradable implantable devices.

Temperature-Responsive Surface Coatings Based on Poly(methylsilsesquioxane)-hybrid Polymers

2007

The present paper presents a new method to build up temperature-responsive surfaces. First a poly(silsesquioxane)-block-poly(N-isopropyl-acrylamide) (PMSSQ-b-PNIPAM) was successfully synthesized using RAFT polymerization. Spin-coating or dip-coating of PMSSQ-b-PNIPAM onto glass surfaces resulted in temperature-responsive surfaces. Surface ATR FT-IR measurements proofed the successful surface modification using PMSSQ-b-PNIPAM. IR fine structures of PNIPAM and PMSSQ could be assigned, respectively. In capillary rise experiments a change of the meniscus height measured at temperatures below or above LCST was observed, indicating a different wetting behavior. Thus, a simple spin- or dip-coating…
