Mannheimer Innovationspanel (MIP), Scientific-Use-Files der Jahre 1993-2016
2018

Innovation activity of SMEs in different locations
2013
Todtling and Trippl (2005) argue that innovation activity is a key element in regional economic development (see also Ronde and Hussler, 2005; Audretsch and Lehmann, 2005; Cooke, 2005). However, we know little about the formation, development and diffusion of innovations in different milieux. The aim of this study is to clarify the factors – in particular, the regional factors – that affect the innovation activity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Our analyses of the innovation activity of Finnish SMEs revealed that innovation activity is very brisk in towns and relatively brisk in rural areas, although the difference between the two was not statistically significant. A logistic…
The Genome of the Sea Urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus
2006
We report the sequence and analysis of the 814-megabase genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus , a model for developmental and systems biology. The sequencing strategy combined whole-genome shotgun and bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) sequences. This use of BAC clones, aided by a pooling strategy, overcame difficulties associated with high heterozygosity of the genome. The genome encodes about 23,300 genes, including many previously thought to be vertebrate innovations or known only outside the deuterostomes. This echinoderm genome provides an evolutionary outgroup for the chordates and yields insights into the evolution of deuterostomes.
Conspiracy Theories and (the) Media (Studies)
2017
Traditionally, research on conspiracy theories (CT) is not at the heart of communication and media studies. Still there are theories, concepts and findings in this discipline which can be fruitfully linked to CT research. If one sees CT as certain forms of narratives, one important question is how they spread within societies, communities and groups. To analyse this, one can apply the concept of "diffusion of innovations", alongside theories and concepts which stem from media studies, such as agenda setting or two-step flow of communication. Moreover, research on strategic and political communication, news bias and even fake news can be linked to the study of CT.
Innovations, Reinvented Politics and Representative Democracy
2020
"This volume focuses on the issue of change in democratic politics in terms of experimental or actual innovations introduced either within political parties or outside the party system, involving citizen participation and mobilization (...)"
The effect of genetic robustness on evolvability in digital organisms
2008
Abstract Background Recent work has revealed that many biological systems keep functioning in the face of mutations and therefore can be considered genetically robust. However, several issues related to robustness remain poorly understood, such as its implications for evolvability (the ability to produce adaptive evolutionary innovations). Results Here, we use the Avida digital evolution platform to explore the effects of genetic robustness on evolvability. First, we obtained digital organisms with varying levels of robustness by evolving them under combinations of mutation rates and population sizes previously shown to select for different levels of robustness. Then, we assessed the abilit…
Strategic orientation to educational innovation : A systematic review and conceptual model
2022
Purpose: To carry out a systematic review of the literature on strategic orientation to educational innovation (SOEI), considering methodological and conceptual aspects. Methodology: Four macro-processes were implemented: identification (study location), description (information extraction), in-depth analysis (grouping and characterization patterns) and dissemination. The studies were identified through Scopus and Web of Science. The search expressions yielded 63 documents; afterwards, quality control was carried out using seven inclusion/exclusion criteria; the final sample consisted of 19 documents subject to review. Findings: With regard to methodological aspects, qualitative studies sta…
