Measurement of transverse-single-spin asymmetries for midrapidity and forward-rapidity production of hadrons in polarized p plus p collisions at root…

2014

[Introduction] Measurements of transverse-single-spin asymmetries ( A N )in p þ p collisions at ffiffiffi s p ¼ 62 . 4 and 200 GeV with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider are presented. At midrapidity, A N is measured for neutral pion and eta mesons reconstructed from diphoton decay, and, at forward rapidities, neutral pions are measured using both diphotons and electromagnetic clusters. The neutral-pion measurement of A N at midrapidity is consistent with zero with uncertainties a factor of 20 smaller than previous publications, which will lead to improved constraints on the gluon Sivers function. At higher rapidities, where the valence quark distributions are probe…

Decays of T Z = − 3/2 nuclei 23Al, 31Cl, and 41Ti

2012

This article gives an overview on the decay spectroscopy of T Z  = − 3/2 nuclei 23Al, 31Cl, and 41Ti performed at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility. The results of the IGISOL experiments are compared to the experimental results that have been published since. The isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) has been studied for the T = 3/2 quartets at A = 23 and A = 31. For 41Ti, a detailed comparison to the Gamow–Teller strengths obtained for the analog transitions via charge-exchange reactions has been done. Further improvements in the experimental instrumentation and methods and possible implementations for studying T Z  = − 3/2 nuclei at the new IGISOL facility are di…

Magnetic resonance imaging of (1)H long lived states derived from parahydrogen induced polarization in a clinical system.

2015

Hyperpolarization is a powerful tool to overcome the low sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). However, applications are limited due to the short lifetime of this non equilibrium spin state caused by relaxation processes. This issue can be addressed by storing hyperpolarization in slowly decaying singlet spin states which was so far mostly demonstrated for non-proton spin pairs, e.g. 13C-13C. Protons hyperpolarized by parahydrogen induced polarization (PHIP) in symmetrical molecules, are very well suited for this strategy because they naturally exhibit a long-lived singlet state. The conversion of the NMR silent singlet spin state to observable magnetization can be achieved by ma…

T2K neutrino flux prediction

2013

The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment studies neutrino oscillations using an off-axismuon neutrino beam with a peak energy of about 0.6 GeV that originates at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex accelerator facility. Interactions of the neutrinos are observed at near detectors placed at 280 m from the production target and at the far detector-Super-Kamiokande-located 295 km away. The flux prediction is an essential part of the successful prediction of neutrino interaction rates at the T2K detectors and is an important input to T2K neutrino oscillation and cross section measurements. A FLUKA and GEANT3-based simulation models the physical processes involved in the neutrino producti…

Isospin-symmetry breaking in masses of ≃ Nuclei

2018

Effects of the isospin-symmetry breaking (ISB) beyond mean-field Coulomb terms are systematically studied in nuclear masses near the N=Z line. The Coulomb exchange contributions are calculated exactly. We use extended Skyrme energy density functionals (EDFs) with proton–neutron-mixed densities, to which we add new terms breaking the isospin symmetry. Two parameters associated with the new terms are determined by fitting mirror and triplet displacement energies (MDEs and TDEs) of isospin multiplets. The new EDFs reproduce MDEs for the T=12 doublets and T=1 triplets, and TDEs for the T=1 triplets. Relative strengths of the obtained isospin-symmetry-breaking terms are not consistent with the d…

ENDOR Spectroscopic and Molecular Orbital Study of the Dynamical Properties of the Side Chain in Radical Anions of Ubiquinones Q-1, Q-2, Q-6, and Q-10

2000

Abstract The dynamics of the side chain of the radical anions of ubiquinones Q-1 (2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-[3-methyl-2-butenyl]-1,4-benzoquinone), Q-2, Q-6, and Q-10 have been investigated using electron nuclear double-resonance (ENDOR) spectroscopy. When radicals are produced in the liquid phase, secondary radicals are also formed. The EPR spectra of these additional radicals overlap with the radical of interest. ENDOR spectroscopy was found to be capable for studying the dynamical properties of such conditions. The temperature dependence of the isotropic hyperfine coupling constants of the β- and γ-protons of the side chain was measured. The activation energy of the rotation and other dyn…

First measurement of the polarization observable E and helicity-dependent cross sections in single π 0 photoproduction from quasi-free nucleons

2017

The double-polarization observable $E$ and the helicity-dependent cross sections $\sigma_{1/2}$ and $\sigma_{3/2}$ have been measured for the first time for single $\pi^{0}$ photoproduction from protons and neutrons bound in the deuteron at the electron accelerator facility MAMI in Mainz, Germany. The experiment used a circularly polarized photon beam and a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The reaction products, recoil nucleons and decay photons from the $\pi^0$ meson were detected with the Crystal Ball and TAPS electromagnetic calorimeters. Effects from nuclear Fermi motion were removed by a kinematic reconstruction of the $\pi^{0}N$ final state. A comparison to data mea…

0.1-10 MeV Neutron Soft Error Rate in Accelerator and Atmospheric Environments

2021

Neutrons with energies between 0.1-10 MeV can significantly impact the Soft Error Rate (SER) in SRAMs manufactured in scaled technologies, with respect to high-energy neutrons. Their contribution is evaluated in accelerator, ground level and avionic (12 km of altitude) environments. Experimental cross sections were measured with monoenergetic neutrons from 144 keV to 17 MeV, and results benchmarked with Monte Carlo simulations. It was found that even 144 keV neutrons can induce upsets due to elastic scattering. Moreover, neutrons in the 0.1-10 MeV energy range can induce more than 60% of the overall upset rate in accelerator applications, while their contribution can exceed 18% in avionics.…

Proton Direct Ionization Upsets at Tens of MeV

2023

Experimental monoenergetic proton single-event upset (SEU) cross sections of a 65-nm low core-voltage static random access memory (SRAM) were found to be exceptionally high not only at low energies ($ 3 MeV and extending up to tens of MeV. The SEU cross Section from 20-MeV protons exceeds the 200-MeV proton SEU cross Section by almost a factor of 3. Similarly, monoenergetic neutron cross sections at 14 MeV are about a factor of 3 lower than the 20-MeV proton cross section. Because of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, it was determined that this strong enhancement is due to the proton direct ionization process as opposed to the elastic and inelastic scattering processes that dominate the SEU res…

Proton irradiation-induced reliability degradation of SiC power MOSFET

2023

The effect of 53 MeV proton irradiation on the reliability of silicon carbide power MOSFETs was investigated. Post-irradiation gate voltage stress was applied and early failures in time-dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB) test were observed for irradiated devices. The applied drain voltage during irradiation affects the degradation probability observed by TDDB tests. Proton-induced single event burnouts (SEB) were observed for devices which were biased close to their maximum rated voltage. The secondary particle production as a result of primary proton interaction with the device material was simulated with the Geant4-based toolkit. peerReviewed
