Photochemistry of 7-acetoxybenzopyran derivatives. Synthesis of eupatoriochromene and encecalin
1989
Abstract The photolysis of the 7-acetoxybenzopyran derivatives 1a-5a has been carried out. Chromene 1a was found to undergo extensive photopolymerization. Chromanone 2a underwent a rather inefficient photo-Fries rearrangement to the 6 - and 8 - acetyl derivatives 2b and 2c . Diacetoxychromene 3a gave the unsaturated ketone 8 as the main product, besides its deacetylation analogue 9 and chromanone 11 . Diacetoxychroman 4a afforded a mixture of four C-acetyl products: 1b, 1c, 2b and 2c , together with Chromene 1a and chromanone 2a. Finally, irradiation of chroman 5a gave rise to a mixture of the two possible photo-Fries products 5b (43%) and 5c (52%). The mechanistic implications of the above…
Recent advances in smart biotechnology: Hydrogels and nanocarriers for tailored bioactive molecules depot
2017
Over the past ten years, the global biopharmaceutical market has remarkably grown, with ten over the top twenty worldwide high performance medical treatment sales being biologics. Thus, biotech R&D (research and development) sector is becoming a key leading branch, with expanding revenues. Biotechnology offers considerable advantages compared to traditional therapeutic approaches, such as reducing side effects, specific treatments, higher patient compliance and therefore more effective treatments leading to lower healthcare costs. Within this sector, smart nanotechnology and colloidal self-assembling systems represent pivotal tools able to modulate the delivery of therapeutics. A comprehens…

Even free radicals should follow some rules: a guide to free radical research terminology and methodology.
2014
Free radicals and oxidants are now implicated in physiological responses and in several diseases. Given the wide range of expertise of free radical researchers, application of the greater understanding of chemistry has not been uniformly applied to biological studies. We suggest that some widely used methodologies and terminologies hamper progress and need to be addressed. We make the case for abandonment and judicious use of several methods and terms and suggest practical and viable alternatives. These changes are suggested in four areas: use of fluorescent dyes to identify and quantify reactive species, methods for measurement of lipid peroxidation in complex biological systems, claims of…
The decomposition of 1-phenyl-3-chloro-nortricyclene and 1-phenylnortricyclene on reduction in 1,2-dimethoxyethane. The EPR spectra of the radical io…
1972
Radical anions of 1-phenyl-3-chloronortricyclene and 1-phenylnortricyclene were produced by reduction with potassium in 1,2-dimethoxyethane under a high vacuum. The initially formed radical anion of 1-phenyl-3-chloronortricyclene was very unstable, and decomposed finally to the anions of naphthalene and biphenyl. The only product of the reduction of 1-phenylnortricyclene was the biphenyl anion. The EPR spectra of the reaction mixtures were measured at temperatures from —80°C to room temperature.
Quality of life following urinary diversion: Orthotopic ileal neobladder versus ileal conduit. A multicentre study among long-term, female bladder ca…
2019
Abstract Introduction Women undergoing radical cystectomy (RC) followed by urinary diversion (UD) for bladder cancer experience a substantial reduction in health-related quality of life (HRQOL). At present, studies comparing long-term QOL outcomes for different UD methods, needed to inform evidence-based choices of bladder reconstruction for female patients, are sparse. Our objective was to compare two common UD methods in terms of their HRQOL outcomes in women. Materials and methods We retrospectively analysed HRQOL in 73 consecutive female bladder cancer patients having undergone orthotopic ileal neobladder (IONB, N = 24) or ileal conduit (IC, N = 49) following RC between 2007 and 2013 in…
Decreased glutathione peroxidase activity in sciatic nerve of alloxan-induced diabetic mice and its correlation with blood glucose levels.
1993
The effect of alloxan-induced diabetes on glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in sciatic nerve of mice has been studied. We have found, 7 days after alloxan treatment, a significant decrease in this enzymatic activity in the cytosol of sciatic nerve of diabetic mice, and moreover, that these changes remained unaltered up to 21 days after alloxan injection. No modification in the glutathione content of sciatic nerve of diabetic mice was observed throughout the experiment when compared with controls. The decrease in GSH-Px activity in this tissue shows a good correlation with the increase of blood glucose levels throughout the experiment. It is hypothesized whether a combination of mecha…
Folic Acid Deficiency Enhances Oral Contraceptive-Induced Platelet Hyperactivity
1997
Abstract In previous studies conducted in female rats and in women, oral contraceptives (OC) were found to induce a platelet hyperactivity that was related to an oxidative stress. Because cases of megaloblastic anemia have been reported to occur in women taking OC, these treatments are suspected of depleting folate stores. In the study presented herein, which was conducted in rats, we sought to determine the influence of dietary folic acid deficiency (FD) on the thrombogenicity of OC. Animals were fed for 6 weeks with either a folic acid-deficient diet (250 μg/kg folic acid) or a control diet (750 μg/kg). One-half of the animals in each group were treated with OC (ethinyl estradiol plus ly…
THE ROLE OF PERI-OPERATIVE BLOOD TRANSFUSION ON CANCER SPECIFIC AND OVERALL MORTALITY AFTER RADICAL CYSTECTOMY FOR BLADDER CANCER
2014
Only few studies investigated the impact of the peri-operative blood transfusion (PBT) rate on both cancerspecific (CSM) and overall mortality (OM) after radical cystectomy (RC) for bladder cancer (Bca). To date, no study has taken into account the possible prognostic role of the pre-operative hemoglobin level (Hb). The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of both pre-operative Hb level and PBT rate on CSS and OS of patients who underwent RC. Materiali e metodi The study cohort included 1575 patients treated with RC for BCa between 1990 and 2012 at a single tertiary referral center. Complete clinical, pathological and follow up-data was available for all the patients. Kaplan- Meier …
