A Bioinspired Dinickel(II) Hydrolase: Solvent Vapor-Induced Hydrolysis of Carboxyesters under Ambient Conditions
2016
From the perspective of synthetic metallohydrolases, a phenoxo-bridged dinickel(II) complex [NiII2(L)(H2O)2(CH3OH)][ClO4]·CH3OH (1) (H3L = 2,6-bis[{{(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzyl)(N′,N″-(dimethylamino)ethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol) has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The presence of a vacant coordination site and a weakly bound water molecule provides the scope for substrate binding to act as a metallohydrolase model. Ethyl acetate vapor diffusion at 298 K to a CH3CN/CH3OH solution of 1 results in the formation of a pentanuclear acetato-bridged complex [NiII5(H2L)2(μ3-OH)2(μ-O2CCH3)4][ClO4]2·CH3CO2C2H5 (2), demonstrating for the first time the metal-coordinated water-promo…
Purification, crystallization and preliminary X-ray studies of sylvaticin, an elicitin-like protein from Pythium sylvaticum.
2003
Sylvaticin belongs to the elicitin family. These 10 kDa oomycetous proteins induce a hypersensitive response in plants, including necrosis and cell death, but subsequently leading to a non-specific systemic acquired resistance (SAR) against other pathogens. Sylvaticin has been crystallized using PEG 2000 MME as a precipitant agent in the presence of nickel chloride. The crystals belong to space group C2, with unit-cell parameters a = 99.29, b = 25.67, c = 67.45 A, beta = 99.66 degrees. Diffraction data were recorded to 2.1 A resolution at a synchrotron-radiation source.
Liquid structure and dynamics in the choline acetate:urea 1:2 deep eutectic solvent
2021
We report on the thermodynamic, structural, and dynamic properties of a recently proposed deep eutectic solvent, formed by choline acetate (ChAc) and urea (U) at the stoichiometric ratio 1:2, hereinafter indicated as ChAc:U. Although the crystalline phase melts at 36-38 degrees C depending on the heating rate, ChAc:U can be easily supercooled at sub-ambient conditions, thus maintaining at the liquid state, with a glass-liquid transition at about -50 degrees C. Synchrotron high energy x-ray scattering experiments provide the experimental data for supporting a reverse Monte Carlo analysis to extract structural information at the atomistic level. This exploration of the liquid structure of ChA…
Kinetics of the lipoperoxyl radical-scavenging activity of indicaxanthin in solution and unilamellar liposomes
2007
Abstract The reaction of the phytochemical indicaxanthin with lipoperoxyl radicals generated in methyl linoleate methanol solution by 2,20-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile), and in aqueous soybean phosphatidylcholine unilamellar liposomes by 2,20-azobis(2- amidinopropane)hydrochloride, was studied. The molecule acts as a chain-terminating lipoperoxyl radical scavenger in solution, with a calculated inhibition constant of 3.63 £ 105M21 s21, and a stoichiometric factor approaching 2. Indicaxanthin incorporated in liposomes prevented lipid oxidation, inducing clear-cut lag periods and decrease of the propagation rate. Both effects were concentration-dependent, but not linearly related to the p…
Sequential injection analysis (SIA)-chemiluminescence determination of indomethacin using tris[(2,2'-bipyridyl)]ruthenium(III) as reagent and its app…
2006
Abstract Automated sequential injection (SIA) method for chemiluminescence (CL) determination of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin ( I ) was devised. The CL radiation was emitted in the reaction of I (dissolved in aqueous 50% v/v ethanol) with intermediate reagent tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(III) (Ru(bipy) 3 3+ ) in the presence of acetate. The Ru(bipy) 3 3+ was generated on-line in the SIA system by the oxidation of 0.5 mM tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bipy) 3 2+ ) with Ce(IV) ammonium sulphate in diluted sulphuric acid. The optimum sequence, concentrations, and aspirated volumes of reactant zones were: 15 mM Ce(IV) in 50 mM sulphuric acid 41 μL, 0.5 mM Ru(bipy) 3 …
Tetraurea calix[4]arenes with sulfur functions: synthesis, dimerization to capsules, and self-assembly on gold.
2007
Various calix[4]arene derivatives, fixed in the cone conformation by decylether groups and functionalized at their wide rim by urea residues, were synthesized. In two compounds (4f,g) sulfur functions were attached to the urea groups via different spacers in order to allow binding to metal surfaces. While they exist as single molecules in polar solvents, tetraurea calix[4]arenes of this type (4) combine to form dimeric capsules in aprotic, apolar solvents. A solvent molecule is usually included in such a capsule, if no guest with a higher affinity is present. In the presence of an equimolar amount of the tetratosylurea 5, the exclusive formation of heterodimers, consisting of one molecule o…
Comparison of green sample preparation techniques in the analysis of pyrethrins and pyrethroids in baby food by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spe…
2017
A new selective and sensitive liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry method was developed for simultaneous analysis of natural pyrethrins and synthetic pyrethroids residues in baby food. In this study, two sample preparation methods based on ultrasound-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (UA-DLLME) and salting-out assisted liquid–liquid extraction (SALLE) were optimized, and then, compared regarding the performance criteria. Appropriate linearity in solvent and matrix-based calibrations, and suitable recoveries (75–120%) and precision (RSD values ≤ 16%) were achieved for selected analytes by any of the sample preparation procedures. Both methods provided the…
Fluorescence emission and enhanced photochemical stability of Zn(II)-5-triethyl ammonium methyl salicylidene ortho-phenylendiiminate interacting with…
2010
Abstract The photophysical and photochemical properties of the cationic Zn II complex of 5-triethyl ammonium methyl salicylidene ortho-phenylendiimine (ZnL 2+ ) interacting with native DNA were investigated by steady state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopies. Experimental results indicate that, in the presence of DNA, ZnL 2+ is efficiently protected from a photochemical process, which occurs when it is in the free state dispersed in aqueous solution. The analysis of the absorption and emission spectra of ZnL 2+ , both stored in the dark and after exposure to tungsten lamp light for 24 h, corroborated by quantum chemical calculations, allowed us to point out that ZnL 2+ undergoes a…

Solvent for removing silicone oil from intraocular lenses: experimental study comparing various biomaterials.
2000
Abstract Purpose To evaluate the effectiveness of a perfluorocarbon—perfluorohexyloctane (PFHO)—in removing silicone oil from different intraocular lenses (IOLs) and determine whether any removal technique enhances the removal of silicone oil. Methods Six IOL materials were analyzed: standard poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), heparin-surface-modified (HSM) PMMA, AcrySof, 2 polyHEMAs with different water contents, and a second-generation SLM-2 silicone. One or 2 μL of a highly viscous silicone oil (5700 cs) was applied to the center of each IOL optic. Perfluorohexyloctane (2 mL) was then used to remove the silicone oil by 1 of 3 techniques: immersion of the IOL in PFHO; irrigation of the sil…
