Abstract Alternariol (AOH) is a mycotoxin produced by Alternaria spp. Soyasaponin I (Ss-I) is present naturally in legumes, and it has antioxidant properties. Cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of AOH have been demonstrated previously in vitro. In the present study, the cytotoxicity of AOH, Ss-I, and soyasaponins-rich extract from lentils was investigated; as well as, the cytoprotective effects of Ss-I and lentil extracts against AOH induced-cytotoxicity on Caco-2 cells. AbstractTocopherol is believed to be the most potent naturally occurring chain-breaking antioxidant. Hence, its refined phenolic head group chromanol may represent an optimum evolutionary solution to the problem of free-radical chain reactions in the lipid bilayer. To test the universal validity of this assumption beyond phenolic head groups, we have synthesized aromatic amine analogues of vitamin E and trolox with otherwise closely matching physicochemical properties: NH-toc and NH-trox. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is the most powerful oxidant produced by human neutrophils and contributes to the damage caused by these inflammatory cells. It is produced from H2O2 and chloride by the heme enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO). Based on findings that betalains provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, we performed the present kinetic study on the interaction between the betalains, betanin and indicaxanthin, with the redox intermediates, compound I and compound II of MPO, and its major cytotoxic product HOCl. The Mn2+ coordination chemistry of double scorpiand ligands in which two polyazacyclophane macrocycles have been connected by pyridine, phenanthroline and bipyridine spacers has been studied by potentiometry, paramagnetic NMR and electrochemistry. All ligands show high stability with Mn2+ and the complexes were formed in a wide pH range. DFT calculations support the structures and coordination geometries derived from the study. The novel 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives containing the cationic pyridine moiety at the position 4, and the N-propargyl group as a substituent at position 1 of the 1,4-DHP cycle were designed, synthesised, and assessed in biological tests. Among all the novel compounds, the 4-(N-dodecyl) pyridinium group-containing compounds 11 (without the N-propargyl group) and 12 (with the N-propargyl group) demonstrated the highest calcium antagonistic properties against neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y (IC50 about 5–14 mM) and the vascular smooth muscle A7r5 cell (IC50 – 0.6–0.7 mM) lines, indicating that they predominantly target the L-type calcium channels. Abstract A convenient synthesis of the pyrrolo[3,4- h ]quinazoline ring system is reported. Our synthetic approach consisted of the annelation of a pyrimidine ring to an isoindole moiety using tetrahydroisoindole-4-ones as building blocks. The antiproliferative activity of the new compounds was investigated and one of them showed antitumor activity against all the 59 tested cell lines at micromolar concentrations (1.46–18.4 μM).

Abstract New complexes of the type R 3 PAuL or (R 3 PAu) 2 (μ-L) where R=ethyl or phenyl and L=6-thioguanine, 2, 6- dithioxanthine, 2, 4-dithiouracil and/or dithioerythritol have been prepared. These complexes have been identified by using elemental analysis, 1 H, 13 C and 31 P NMR spectroscopy. The structures have been proposed based on these spectroscopic studies. Sulfur appears to be the binding site in disubstituted complexes of 2, 4-dithiouracil and 1, 4-dithioerythritol, while the phosphine gold( I ) moieties appear to be S and N bonded in 2, 6-dithioxanthine and 6-thioguanine. The potential use of these complexes as antitumor drugs is discussed.

Abstract Three new complexes of Ru(II), namely [RuCl 2 (Glun-N,O) 2 ]Na 2 ( I ; Glun = glucosaminate), [RuCl 2 (1-Tglu)(EtOH) 2 ]Na ( II ; 1-Tglu = 1-thio-β- d -glucose) and [Ru 2 (EtOH) 6 (AL)Cl 4 ] ( III ; AL = 6′-aminolactose) were prepared from the same Ru(II) precursor, [RuCl 2 (DMSO) 4 ] (DMSO = dimethyl sulfoxide). The characterization of the complexes was carried out by elemental analysis, FT-IR, ES-MS, NMR, EXAFS and DFT calculations. The effectiveness of the complexes on metastatic melanoma A 375 was investigated. The results show that complex II is the most active species.
