Computational modeling and experimental characterization of fluid dynamics in micro-CT scanned scaffolds within a multiple-sample airlift perfusion b…

2023

The perfusion of flow during cell culture induces cell proliferation and enhances cellular activity. Perfusion bioreactors offer a controlled dynamic environment for reliable in vitro applications in the tissue engineering field. In this work, to evaluate the effects of the operating parameters of a custom-made bioreactor, numerical simulations were performed to solve the fluid velocity profile inside the bioreactor containing multi-grid support that allows allocating of multiple seeded scaffolds at the same time. The perfusion system exhibited a uniform distribution of liquid velocities within the regions, suitable for cell growth on seeded scaffolds. The effects of the porous microstructu…

Toxoplasmosis, a severe complication in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: successful treatment strategies during a 5-year single-ce…

1999

Toxoplasmosis is a rare but often fatal complication that occurs after patients undergo allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant. At our institution, toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in 8 of 301 patients who received stem cell transplants. Disseminated toxoplasmosis with a rapid fatal course was observed in 2 patients. Six patients had cerebral toxoplasmosis diagnosed on the basis of neurological signs and observation of the patients' mental confusion, seizures, and typical lesions (which were assessed by computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, or both). Seroconversion of antitoxoplasma immunoglobulin and a discovery of toxoplasma deoxyribonucleic acid in the cerebrospinal fluid (c…

Impact of systematic whole-body 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT on the management of patients suspected of infective endocarditis: the prospective mult…

2021

AbstractBackgroundDiagnostic and patients’ management modifications induced by whole-body 18F-FDG-PET/CT had not been evaluated so far in prosthetic valve (PV) or native valve (NV) infective endocarditis (IE)-suspected patients.MethodsIn sum, 140 consecutive patients in 8 tertiary care hospitals underwent 18F-FDG-PET/CT. ESC-2015-modified Duke criteria and patients’ management plan were established jointly by 2 experts before 18F-FDG-PET/CT. The same experts reestablished Duke classification and patients’ management plan immediately after qualitative interpretation of 18F-FDG-PET/CT. A 6-month final Duke classification was established.ResultsAmong the 70 PV and 70 NV patients, 34 and 46 wer…

A MEMS array-type Mirau interferometer for swept-source OCT imaging with applications in dermatology

2017

In the frame the European project VIAMOS (www.viamos.eu) we developed a microsystem based on Mirau interferometry and applied for optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging of living tissues. The objective is to benefit from advanced MOEMS technologies, enabling a new generation of miniature and low-cost instruments using the concept of the swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) microsystem based on spectrally tuned Mirau interferometry, into which a doublet of microlens matrices (4×4) and a wafer of movable reference mirrors are included, building the active Mirau interferometer.

A multiscale X-ray phase-contrast tomography dataset of whole human left lung

2021

ABSTRACTTechnological advancements in X-ray imaging using bright and coherent synchrotron sources now allows to decouple sample size and resolution, while maintaining high sensitivity to the microstructure of soft, partially dehydrated tissues. The recently developed imaging technique, hierarchical phase-contrast tomography, is a comprehensive approach to address the challenge of organ-scale (up to tens of centimeters) soft tissue imaging with resolution and sensitivity down to the cellular level. Using this technique, we imaged ex vivo an entire human left lung at an isotropic voxel size of 25.08 μm along with local zooms down to 6.05 - 6.5 μm and 2.45 - 2.5 μm in voxel size. The high tiss…

Difficulties in distinguishing between an atlas fracture and a congenital posterior atlas arch defect in postmortem analysis.

2013

We found one atlas from a sample of 148 skeletons (0.67%) that presented different anatomical variations which made it difficult to determine whether the vertebra had an atlas fracture, an unusual Type B posterior atlas arch defect, or a combination of both. We carried out a stereomicroscopy, radiographic, and computerized tomography scan study that revealed that the dry atlas we found presented a very uncommon congenital Type B posterior atlas arch defect, simulating a fracture. In short, the present paper has revealed that differentiating Type B posterior atlas arch defects from fractures in post-mortem dry vertebrae is more difficult than expected. Thus we believe that it can be easier t…

Evaluation of a Completely Robotized Neurosurgical Operating Microscope

2012

BACKGROUND Operating microscopes are essential for most neurosurgical procedures. Modern robot-assisted controls offer new possibilities, combining the advantages of conventional and automated systems. OBJECTIVE We evaluated the prototype of a completely robotized operating microscope with an integrated optical coherence tomography module. METHODS A standard operating microscope was fitted with motors and control instruments, with the manual control mode and balance preserved. In the robot mode, the microscope was steered by a remote control that could be fixed to a surgical instrument. External encoders and accelerometers tracked microscope movements. The microscope was additionally fitted…

Effect of different mixing and placement methods on the quality of MTA apical plug in simulated apexification model

2017

Background It is necessary apical plug material to exhibit proper adaptation with the root canal walls. Presence of voids at the interface between the root canal wall and this material result in micro leakage, which might have a relationship with post treatment disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different mixing (manual and ultrasonic) and placement (manual and manual in association with indirect ultrasonic) method of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) on the void count and dimension in the apical plug in natural teeth with simulated open apices. Material and methods Eighty human maxillary central incisors were selected. After simulation of the open apex model…

Computational analysis of lung deformation after murine pneumonectomy. [corrected].

2012

In many mammalian species, the removal of one lung (pneumonectomy) is associated with the compensatory growth of the remaining lung. To investigate the hypothesis that parenchymal deformation may trigger lung regeneration, we used microCT scanning to create 3-dimensional finite element geometric models of the murine lung pre- and post-pneumonectomy (24 hours). The structural correspondence between models was established using anatomic landmarks and an iterative computational algorithm. When compared with the pre-pneumonectomy lung, the post-pneumonectomy models demonstrated significant translation and rotation of the cardiac lobe into the post-pneumonectomy pleural space. 2-dimensional maps…
