Treatment strategies and outcome of the exstrophy–epispadias complex in germany: data from the german CURE-Net

2020

Introduction: To evaluate the impact of reconstructive strategies and post-operative management on short- and long-term surgical outcome and complications of classical bladder exstrophy (CBE) patients' comprehensive data of the multicenter German-wide Network for Congenital Uro-Rectal malformations (CURE-Net) were analyzed. Methods: Descriptive analyses were performed between 34 prospectively collected CBE patients born since 2009, median 3 months old [interquartile range (IQR), 2–4 months], and 113 cross-sectional patients, median 12 years old (IQR, 6–21 years). Results: The majority of included individuals were males (67%). Sixty-eight percent of the prospectively observed and 53% of the …

Commentary: Preliminary Evidence for Training-Induced Changes of Morphology and Phantom Limb Pain

2019

The aim of this study was to investigate whether a special prosthetic training in phantom limb pain patients aimed at increasing the functional use of the prosthesis leads to neural morphological plasticity of brain structures and a reduction in phantom limb pain. For chronic pain disorders, it was shown that morphological alterations due to pain might become at least partially reversed by pain therapies. Phantom limb pain is a chronic pain disorder that is frequently followed by neural plasticity of anatomical brain structures. In our study, 10 patients with amputation of the upper limb participated in a two-week training with a myoelectric prosthesis with somatosensory feedback. Grip stre…

(Za)pamiętany obraz „słodkiego” dzieciństwa, czyli opowieści o maszketach

2022

The subject of the article constitutes memories of native Silesians about childhood, or, more precisely, a selected element of cultural heritage, which are sweets, or maszkety, as they are called in the Silesian dialect. The presented statements were recorded by the author during field research conducted between 2019 and 2021 in Upper Silesia, in two provinces – Opole and Silesia – in rural and urban communities. The collected material reveals a picture of childhood in Poland from the post-war period to the 1980s within the context of specific food items, and their place and importance in the lives of children. The material provides a lot of interesting information about the sweets themselv…

Uniformization of two-dimensional metric surfaces

2014

We establish uniformization results for metric spaces that are homeomorphic to the Euclidean plane or sphere and have locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure. Applying the geometric definition of quasiconformality, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for such spaces to be QC equivalent to the Euclidean plane, disk, or sphere. Moreover, we show that if such a QC parametrization exists, then the dilatation can be bounded by 2. As an application, we show that the Euclidean upper bound for measures of balls is a sufficient condition for the existence of a 2-QC parametrization. This result gives a new approach to the Bonk-Kleiner theorem on parametrizations of Ahlfors 2-regular spheres by qu…

Karnawalizacja górniczego świętowania

2019

Ludność Górnego Śląska w latach 1950–1989 w świetle wybranych polskich i niemieckich materiałów źródłowych (opracowanie analityczne)

2017

Curiosity and exploration: A conceptual overview and structural modeling

2001

Many attempts have been made to measure curiosity or intrinsic motivation. However, there is no consensus on what curiosity is. In the present study, five previously constructed curiosity inventories were translated to Finnish and modified to be convenient for fifth-graders. The main purpose of the study was to clarify the concept of curiosity. Using conceptual analysis and the results of previous studies, it was possible to construct nine alternative conceptual models of curiosity. The corresponding statistical models were expected to account for the covariances among 15 subscales measuring curiosity-related exploratory behavior. However, before proceeding to the subscale level, the struct…

Movement Variability Increases With Shoulder Pain When Compensatory Strategies of the Upper Body Are Constrained

2017

[DE] This cross-sectional study analyzed the influence of chronic shoulder pain (CSP) on movement variability/kinematics during humeral elevation, with the trunk and elbow motions constrained to avoid compensatory strategies. For this purpose, 37 volunteers with CSP as the injured group (IG) and 58 participants with asymptomatic shoulders as the control group (CG) participated in the study. Maximum humeral elevation (Emax), maximum angular velocity (Velmax), variability of the maximum angle (CVEmax), functional variability (Func_var), and approximate entropy (ApEn) were calculated from the kinematic data. Patients' pain was measured on the visual analogue scale (VAS). Compared with the CG, …

Manometric assessment of oesophageal involvement in progressive systemic sclerosis, morphoea and Raynaud's disease.

1982

SUMMARY Oesophageal function was studied by radiography and manometry in fifty-one patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS), fourteen patients with morphoea, twelve patients with Raynaud's disease and twenty-one normal subjects. Upper oesophageal sphincter pressure was not affected. Peristaltic contractions of the upper third of the oesophagus were significantly decreased in PSS and morphoea, but the lower two-thirds were affected only in PSS. Lower oesophageal sphincter pressure was significantly decreased in PSS but was normal in morphoea and Raynaud's disease. There was a significant correlation between oesophageal dysfunction and the duration of PSS. Manometry was better than …
