Promoting 21st Century Literacy Education in Zambia
2015
The aim of the project CAPOLSA (Centre for Promotion of Literacy in Sub-Saharan Africa) was to establish a strong literacy centre at the University of Zambia (UNZA). The long-term goal is to have international visibility and impact, specifically in African countries facing similar challenges to Zambia. This literacy training approach is based on the Grapho Learning Initiative and the innovative and efficient digital-based learning game, GraphoGame, that has been developed based on scientific studies led by Professor Heikki Lyytinen at the University of Jyväskylä (JYU). He was the responsible project leader, together with Professor Robert Serpell at UNZA. The project implementation period wa…
Challenges Associated with Reading Acquisition in Sub-Saharan Africa : Promotion of Literacy in Multilingual Contexts
2019
Heikki Lyytinen and his co-authors note the problems of poorly trained teachers and large class sizes in Africa. Drawing on experience in Zambia, they present a case study of a digital game that can help overcome these problems and lead to more effective literacy instruction, particularly for students facing barriers to learning how to read. peerReviewed

The outcomes of national literacy programs on basic reading skills in familiar language among Zambian early graders
2016
In Zambia the Ministry of General Education implemented two national literacy programs in order to improve low levels of reading; the Primary Reading Program (PRP) implemented from 1999 to 2014 and the Primary Literacy Program (PLP) piloted in some schools in 2014 before being scaled up. This research examines the acquisition of basic reading skills among learners in familiar languages at the end of grade 2 in the two national literacy programs. I examined assessment results separately for each program and compared the two with each other. Outcomes were observed on the basis of the Early Grade Reading assessment test battery given to random samples of children (n=393) in 40 schools from 4 d…

Investigating language acquisition in Zambia : mapping vowel confusion of a, e and i between English and ciNyanja

Abstrakti Sambiassa tehdyt tutkimukset osoittavat, että lukutaito jää saavuttamatta valtaosalta lapsista. Lukutaito alkaa kirjainten ja äänteiden välisen yhteyden ymmärtämisellä. Aiempi heikkojen lukijoiden parissa tehty tutkimus osoittaa sambialaisilla lapsilla olevan vaikeuksia vokaalien a, e ja i kirjain-äänneyhteyksien muodostamisessa englannin kielen vaikutusten vuoksi. Lukutaidon tasolla voi olla vaikutusta tutkimustuloksiin. Tämä tutkimus pyrkii selvittämään vokaalien mahdollista sekoittumista käyttämällä satunnaistettua tavallisista koululaisista koostuvaa otosta. Aineisto kerättiin Lusakan koulualueella tehdyistä lukutaitopeli GraphoGame –tutkimuksista. Ryhmätason ristiintaulukoint…
Using a phone-based learning tool as an instructional resource for initial literacy learning in rural African families
2020
Background: Despite increased enrolments at primary schools in Zambia, more than half of the children in Grades 1–4 are unable to meet the required minimum standards for literacy. Aim: The study set out to examine the effects of using a phone-based mobile literacy game (Graphogame) to improve literacy skills in children and adults in rural family settings. Setting: The study was conducted in the Katete District, a rural town in the eastern province of Zambia. Methods: Participants were 73 Grade 2 learners (52% boys, mean age 9 years and 48% girls, mean age 10 years) and 37 parents (mean age 36 years). Three literacy tests, measuring letter-sound identification, phonological awareness, spell…
