Promoting 21st Century Literacy Education in Zambia

The aim of the project CAPOLSA (Centre for Promotion of Literacy in Sub-Saharan Africa) was to establish a strong literacy centre at the University of Zambia (UNZA). The long-term goal is to have international visibility and impact, specifically in African countries facing similar challenges to Zambia. In Zambia the Ministry of General Education implemented two national literacy programs in order to improve low levels of reading; the Primary Reading Program (PRP) implemented from 1999 to 2014 and the Primary Literacy Program (PLP) piloted in some schools in 2014 before being scaled up. Using a phone-based learning tool as an instructional resource for initial literacy learning in rural African families

Background: Despite increased enrolments at primary schools in Zambia, more than half of the children in Grades 1–4 are unable to meet the required minimum standards for literacy. Aim: The study set out to examine the effects of using a phone-based mobile literacy game (Graphogame) to improve literacy skills in children and adults in rural family settings.
