Use of neural networks for dosage individualisation of erythropoietin in patients with secondary anemia to chronic renal failure.

The external administration of recombinant human erythropoietin is the chosen treatment for those patients with secondary anemia due to chronic renal failure undergoing periodic hemodialysis. The goal is to carry out an individualised prediction of the erythropoietin dosage to be administered. It is justified because of the high cost of this medication, its secondary effects and the phenomenon of potential resistance which some individuals suffer. One hundred and ten patients were included in this study and several factors were collected in order to develop the neural models. Since the results obtained were excellent, an easy-to-use decision-aid computer application was implemented.

Spatial Interaction between Neighbouring Counties: Cancer Mortality Data in Valencia (Spain)

The statistical analysis of geographical mortality data has usually been approached via regression models that include appropriate covariates. These models assume stochastic independence of mortality counts for neighbouring sites, a questionable assumption that spatial automodels (Besag, 1974, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B 36, 192-236) make unnecessary. This paper presents the use of the autopoisson distribution in order to detect spatial interaction between neighbouring sites. If this interaction results in being nonsignificant, the auto-Poisson distribution reduces to a usual Poisson regression model, a particular case of generalized linear models (McCullagh and Nelde…

Incidence and epidemiology of Citrus tristeza virus in the Valencian Community of Spain

Abstract The first outbreak of citrus tristeza disease in Spain caused by Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) was recorded in 1957 in the Valencian Community (VC). In total c. 40 million trees, mainly of sweet orange and mandarin grafted on sour orange rootstocks, declined due to CTV. Large-scale surveys in different municipalities of the VC indicated that the disease spread very fast. Incidence increased from 11% in 1989 to 53% in 1998. Toxoptera aurantii and Aphis spiraecola (inefficient aphid vectors of CTV) predominated before 1985–87. Since then the relatively efficient vector Aphis gossypii has become dominant and induced an epidemic that has been modelled. The large number of A.gossypii that…

Characterization and Modelization of Surface Net Radiation through Neural Networks

Artificial neural networks have shown to be a powerful tool for system modeling in a wide range of applications. In this chapter, the focus is on neural network applications to obtain qualitative/quantitative relationships between meteorological and soil parameters and net radiation, the latter being a significant term of the surface energy balance equation. By using a Multilayer Perceptron model an artificial neural network based on the above mentioned parameters, net radiation was estimated over a vineyard crop. A comparison has been made between the estimates provided by the Multilayer Perceptron and a linear regression model that only uses solar incoming shortwave radiation as input par…
