AbstractThis study describes the molecular mechanism by which treatment with 3-AB, a potent inhibitor of PARP, allows human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells to restrict growth and enter differentiation. Our findings show that in MG-63 cells, aberrant gene expression keeps Rb protein constitutively inactivated through hyperphosphorylation and this promotes uncontrolled proliferation of the cells. After 3-AB-treatment, the poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation of nuclear proteins markedly decreases and this results in an increase in both the hypophosphorylated active form of Rb and pRb/E2F complexes. Microbiological Profile and Bioactive Properties of Insect Powders Used in Food and Feed Formulations

Microbiological, nutritional and bioactive properties of edible powders obtained from Acheta domesticus (house cricket) and Tenebrio molitor (mealworm) were investigated. Except for the enterobacteria, viable bacteria were at a higher concentration in mealworm flour. The diversity evaluation carried out using MiSeq Illumina that mainly identified Citrobacter and Enterobacteriaceae in mealworm powder and members of the Porphyromonadaceae family in house cricket powder. The liver activity of lipogenic enzymes, the lipid content in various tissues, and plasma lipid levels of major, were measured in sea bass (D. labrax) fed over 96 days either a, fish meal-based control diet or preparations where 70% of fish meal protein was replaced by wheat gluten singly or in combination with pea or soybean meals. Determination of biological characteristics of Tunisian Artemia salina populations

In this study, Artemia salina cysts collected from four Tunisian hypersaline environments were characterized using biometrical, biological and biochemical descriptors. Biometrical analysis revealed that the mean diameter value ranged from 220.25 to 237.76 μm, for the untreated cysts, from 199 to 224.52 μm for decapsulated cysts and that the chorion thickness ranged from 6.62 to 10.58 μm. 48 h after hatching, Artemia from Sebkha El Meleh, Sebha Moknine, Sfax saltworks and Sahline saltworks presented a hatching percentage of 52.7%, 53.75%, 70.16% and 43.74%, respectively. Identification and expansion of human osteosarcoma-cancer-stem cells by long-term 3-aminobenzamide treatment

The antioxidant power of horseradish, Armoracia rusticana, underlies antimicrobial and antiradical effects, exerted in vitro

Armoracia rusticana (AR) was tested for antimicrobial and antioxidants power. The compound demonstrated to inhibit fish pathogens such as Vibrio anguillarum, V. harvey, V. alginolyticus, Aeromonas hydrophila, A. salmonicida, Photobacterium damselae subspecie piscicida, Tenacibaculum marinum and Pseudomonas anguilliseptica,. The total phenolic content and the reducing power resulted higher in the water extract of AR, respect to the hydroalcoolic. In vitro test demonstrated that AR significantly protect cells against death, induced by oxidative stress.

Efficacy of Brevibacillus brevis strain and its influence on larval rearing of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were investigated in the present work. Biochemical analyses permit to identify this strain as B. brevis. This bacterium has an inhibitory effect against fish pathogenic bacteria, especially the genus of Vibrio. Enzymatic characterization revealed that B. brevis was lipase positive, amylase, lecithinase and caseinase negative. In this article we show for the first time that PTX/LPC combination induces potent synergistic apoptotic effects in human retinoblastoma Y79 cells. Combination of suboptimal doses of PTX (0.3 nM) and LPC (1.5 microM) caused biochemical and morphological signs of apoptosis at 48 h of treatment. Tunisian tomato by-products, as a potential source of natural bioactive compounds.

Consumption of tomato and tomato products is positively related to the reduction in cardiovascular disease and several types of cancer, thanks to the presence of natural compounds, such as antioxidants. Peels and seeds fractions of tomato, collected after industrial processing in Tunisian industries, were analysed for nutritional and antioxidants composition in perspective of its utilisation. Proximate composition, fatty acids profile, carotenoids, such as lycopene and beta-carotene, polyphenols contents, demonstrated the good potential of these residual products as a source of natural compounds, useful for food and nutraceuticals applications.

Biochemical and nutritional traits of sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax) from different rearing systems

Farmed European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), sampled from three different culture systems (intensive in sea-cages, intensive in land-based basins and extensive in lagoon and storage basins of salt-work), of the Northern, Central and Southern Italy, were analyzed with the aim to employ nutritional trait to describe and to distinguish the &ldquo;origin&rdquo; of the product. Lipid and fatty acid profile, strongly affected by the feeding history and environmental factors, responsible of the nu- tritional and perceived quality of fish product, are proposed as marker of origin.

Abstract Analyses of fatty acids from the dorsal muscle of Acipenser naccarii  ×  A. baerii sturgeon hybrid were carried out. The data were compared with those reported in the literature for other sturgeons reared for human consumption. This hybrid would seem to be of great nutritional interest, its flesh being more beneficial for human health than those of other cultured sturgeons. Levels of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and metals in European sea bass from fish farms in Italy

The study evaluated the levels of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and metals in the fillet of medium (468 ± 92 g) and large (708 ± 135 g) European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) from 11 Italian fish farms using different rearing systems. The paper reports the results of an experimental seismic survey in the open sea by an air gun, carried out to evaluate the effects of air gun acoustic waves on marine animals. Air gun blast exposition was found to have a marked influence on confined Dicentrarchus labrax. Our data, in fact, demonstrated a biochemical response to acoustic stress induced by air gun blasts. Species-Specific Antioxidant Power and Bioactive Properties of the Extracts Obtained from Wild Mediterranean Calendula Spp. (Asteraceae)

In this study we focused on four taxa of the genus Calendula (C. maritima, C. suffruticosa subsp. fulgida, C. arvensis, and the hybrid between the first two ones), collected in Mediterranean area (Sicily). Six extracts for each species were obtained using solvents with increasing polarity (hexane, ethanol 80%, acetone 70%, and water) and through extraction by supercritical fluids (SFE). By-products of farmed European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) as a potential source of n-3 PUFA

Total by-products (TBP) obtained by filleting farmed and wild European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were analyzed to evaluate if, on the basis of the percentage yield, total lipid content and fatty acid composition, they can be considered a resource of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Results show that TBP from intensively farmed fish (IFF) contain higher total lipid content and have a higher level of n-3 PUFA rich in eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosaexaenoic acid (DHA), compared to extensively farmed fish (EFF) and to wild fish (WF) (P < 0.05). This difference may suggest a way of promotion of TBP from IFF sea bass through the n-3 PUFA recovery by extraction.

Analyses of fatty acids from the dorsal muscle of Acipenser naccarii · A. baerii sturgeon hybrid were carried out. The data were compared with those reported in the literature for other sturgeons reared for human consumption. This hybrid would seem to be of great nutritional interest, its flesh being more beneficial for human health than those of other cultured sturgeons. In fact, the level of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was very high (34.7 ± 0.67%), being similar to that of monounsaturated fatty acids (37.9 ± 0.83%). Astaxanthin is a major marine carotenoid with powerful antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. The in vitro protective effect of astaxanthin in adult retinal cells of the type-2 diabetic model Psammomys obesus in hyperglycemic conditions was investigated. Primary retinal cells were cultured in normal (5 mM) or high concentrations of glucose (25 and 40 mM) for 5 days and treated with 1-20 μM astaxanthin for the last 48 h of culturing.
