Lateral internal sphincterotomy is still crucial to heal hypertonic chronic anal fissure and normalize the internal anal sphincter tone? Is V-en Y pl…
2021
INTRODUCTION: The role of augmented internal anal sphincter (IAS) tone in the genesis of chronic anal fissure (CAF) is still unclear. Lateral internal sphincterotomy (LIS) is the most employed surgical procedure, aiming to reduce the IAS tone leaving a permanent anatomical alteration and it is burdened by high risk post-operative anal incontinence (AI). The aim of this work was to evaluate if the pre-operative manometric alterations of CAFs with hypertonic IAS would normalize after sphincter preserving surgical procedure. METHODS: We enrolled 108 consecutive patients affected by idiopathic and non-recurrent CAF undergone fissurectomy and anoplasty with V-Y cutaneous flap advancement and pha…
Chess recognition using 3D patterned illumination camera
2021
Computer Vision has been applied to augment traditional board games such as Chess for a number of reasons. While augmented reality enhances the gaming experience, the required additional hardware (e.g. head gear) is still not widely accepted in everyday leisure activities, and therefore, camera based methods have been developed to interface the computer with the real-life chess board. However, traditional 2D camera approaches suffer from ill-defined environmental conditions (lighting, viewing angle) and are therefore severely limited in their application. To answer this issue, we have incorporated a consumer-grade depth camera based on patterned illumination. We could show that in combinati…

Bio-imaging with the helium-ion microscope: A review
2021
Scanning helium-ion microscopy (HIM) is an imaging technique with sub-nanometre resolution and is a powerful tool to resolve some of the tiniest structures in biology. In many aspects, the HIM resembles a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), but the use of helium ions rather than electrons provides several advantages, including higher surface sensitivity, larger depth of field, and a straightforward charge-compensating electron flood gun, which enables imaging of non-conductive samples, rendering HIM a promising high-resolution imaging technique for biological samples. Starting with studies focused on medical research, the last decade has seen some particularly spectacular …
Description of intermodulation generation of nonlinear responses beyond the validity of the power series expansion
2021
Weakly nonlinear responses are commonly described by a power series expansion. However, intermodulation distortion products that cannot be described by a power series have been observed in a variety of physical systems. As the power series description is only applicable within its radius of convergence, we choose an alternative approach based on Fourier coefficients to describe intermodulation levels beyond the convergence of the power series. The description over a wide power range allows us to make a decision about models and to determine previously inaccessible model parameters. We apply the approach to data obtained from the characterization of the nonlinear dielectric susceptibility of…
Incidence and severity of postthrombotic syndrome after iliofemoral thrombosis - results of the Iliaca-PTS - Registry.
2021
Summary: Background: Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and in particular, iliofemoral thrombosis (IFT) can lead to recurrent thrombosis and postthrombotic syndrome (PTS). Data on the prevalence, predictors and outcome of IFT are scarce. Patients and methods: We retrospectively searched our database of outpatients who had presented with DVT and IFT including the iliac veins from 2014 until 2017. In addition, we performed a prospective registry in a subgroup of patients with IFT. These patients received duplex ultrasound, magnetic resonance venography and measurement of symptom-free walking distance using a standardized treadmill ergometry. The severity of PTS was analyzed using the Villalta-Scal…
Force probe simulations using an adaptive resolution scheme
2021
Molecular simulations of the forced unfolding and refolding of biomolecules or molecular complexes allow to gain important kinetic, structural and thermodynamic information about the folding process and the underlying energy landscape. In force probe molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations, one pulls one end of the molecule with a constant velocity in order to induce the relevant conformational transitions. Since the extended configuration of the system has to fit into the simulation box together with the solvent such simulations are very time consuming. Here, we apply a hybrid scheme in which the solute is treated with atomistic resolution and the solvent molecules far away from the solute a…
Search for New Physics via Baryon EDM at LHC
2021
Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of fundamental particles provide powerful probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. We propose to search for the EDM of strange and charm baryons at LHC, extending the ongoing experimental program on the neutron, muon, atoms, molecules and light nuclei. The EDM of strange $\Lambda$ baryons, selected from weak decays of charm baryons produced in pp collisions at LHC, can be determined by studying the spin precession in the magnetic field of the detector tracking system. A test of CPT symmetry can be performed by measuring the magnetic dipole moment of $\Lambda$ and $\overline{\Lambda}$ baryons. For short-lived $\Lambda_c^+$ and $\Xi_c^+$ baryons, …
“He should so be in jail”: An Empirical Study on Preverbal So in American English
2021
This paper explores the use of so-called GenX so as a modifier of verb phrases, as exemplified in “He should so be in jail” (SOAP, DAYS, 2005). Drawing on over 1350 relevant tokens retrieved from the Corpus of American Soap Operas (SOAP) (Davies 2011-, 100 million words from 2001-2012), the main purpose of the present study is to provide robust empirical evidence for various findings yielded by small-scale studies and by introspection. The results corroborate some of the previous findings, while others, particularly those based on introspection, are challenged in light of empirical (counter)evidence. The data show that preverbal so is very flexible in that it can occur in various syntactic…
Comprehensive defect suppression in perovskite nanocrystals for high-efficiency light-emitting diodes
2021
Electroluminescence efficiencies of metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) are limited by a lack of material strategies that can both suppress the formation of defects and enhance the charge carrier confinement. Here we report a one-dopant alloying strategy that generates smaller, monodisperse colloidal particles (confining electrons and holes, and boosting radiative recombination) with fewer surface defects (reducing non-radiative recombination). Doping of guanidinium into formamidinium lead bromide PNCs yields limited bulk solubility while creating an entropy-stabilized phase in the PNCs and leading to smaller PNCs with more carrier confinement. The extra guanidinium segregates to th…

Mpro-SARS-CoV-2 Inhibitors and Various Chemical Reactivity of 1-Bromo- and 1-Chloro-4-vinylbenzene in [3 + 2] Cycloaddition Reactions
2021
The regioselectvity and the mechanism of the (32CA) cycloadditions reactions of 1-bromo-4-vinylbenzene 1 and 1-chloro-4-vinylbenzene 2 with benzonitrile oxide 3 were investigated under the molecular electron density theory (MEDT) at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) computational level. Evaluation of the ELF reveals that these zwitterionic type (zw-type) 32CA reactions take place in a two-stage one-step mechanism. This MEDT study shows that the meta isoxazolines are kinetically and thermodynamically favored over the ortho ones, these 32CA reactions being completely regioselective, in agreement with experimental outcomes. In addition, the efficiency of isoxazolines against SARS-CoV-2 have been also in…

Water quality sensor placement: a multi-objective and multi-criteria approach
2021
[EN] To satisfy their main goal, namely providing quality water to consumers, water distribution networks (WDNs) need to be suitably monitored. Only well designed and reliable monitoring data enables WDN managers to make sound decisions on their systems. In this belief, water utilities worldwide have invested in monitoring and data acquisition systems. However, good monitoring needs optimal sensor placement and presents a multi-objective problem where cost and quality are conflicting objectives (among others). In this paper, we address the solution to this multi-objective problem by integrating quality simulations using EPANET-MSX, with two optimization techniques. First, multi-objective op…

Haploinsufficiency of ARFGEF1 is associated with developmental delay, intellectual disability, and epilepsy with variable expressivity
2021
PURPOSE: ADP ribosylation factor guanine nucleotide exchange factors (ARFGEFs) are a family of proteins implicated in cellular trafficking between the Golgi apparatus and the plasma membrane through vesicle formation. Among them is ARFGEF1/BIG1, a protein involved in axon elongation, neurite development, and polarization processes. ARFGEF1 has been previously suggested as a candidate gene for different types of epilepsies, although its implication in human disease has not been well characterized.METHODS: International data sharing, in silico predictions, and in vitro assays with minigene study, western blot analyses, and RNA sequencing.RESULTS: We identified 13 individuals with heterozygous…
Regenerative scheduling problem in engineer to order manufacturing: an economic assessment
2021
The dynamic production scheduling is a very complex process that may arise from the occurrence of unpredictable situations such as the arrival of new orders besides the ones already accepted. As a consequence, companies may often encounter several difficulties to make decisions about the new orders acceptance and sequencing along with the production of the existing ones. With this recognition, a mathematical programming model for the regenerative scheduling problem with deterministic processing times is formulated in the present paper to evaluate the economic advantage of accepting a new order in an engineer to order (ETO) manufacturing organization. The real case of an Italian ETO company …

Poor adaptation by the family caregiver negatively affects the pedi- atric patient. Our objective was therefore to study the adjustment of the main family caregivers of pediatric patients with SS, analyzing the factors influencing it. One hundred and ten primary family caregivers of pediatric SS patients from hospitals in Valencia, Spain, participated. Parental stress (Pediatric Inventory for Parents), anxious and depres- sive symptoms (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), family functioning (Family Cohesion and Adaptation Scale…
Tracking oneself for others: communal and self-motivational value of sharing exercise data online
2021
Self-tracking is increasingly popular in recreational sport. Leisure sports practitioners use wearable devices that are connected to online platforms to record, analyse, and share their exercise data. While doing that they interact with a digital system, with themselves, and with peers. This paper examines social-communicative aspects of self-tracking, and the support that these aspects and their associated practices may provide for physical activity behaviour. Data for the study was collected using an online survey and in-depth interviews with Finnish trail runners. The results indicate that sharing exercise data with others on a regular basis can support physical activity behaviour becaus…
