Effect of fluid resuscitation on cerebral integrity: A prospective randomised porcine study of haemorrhagic shock.

2021

BACKGROUND The treatment of haemorrhagic shock is a challenging task. Colloids have been regarded as standard treatment, but their safety and benefit have been the subject of controversial debates. Negative effects, including renal failure and increased mortality, have resulted in restrictions on their administration. The cerebral effects of different infusion regimens are largely unknown. OBJECTIVES The current study investigated the impact of gelatine-polysuccinate, hydroxyethyl starch (HES) and balanced electrolyte solution (BES) on cerebral integrity, focusing on cerebral inflammation, apoptosis and blood flow in pigs. DESIGN Randomised experimental study. SETTING University-affiliated …

On presentations for mapping class groups of orientable surfaces via Poincaré's Polyhedron theorem and graphs of groups

2021

The mapping class group of an orientable surface with one boundary component, S, is isomorphic to a subgroup of the automorphism group of the fundamental group of S. We call these subgroups algebraic mapping class groups. An algebraic mapping class group acts on a space called ordered Auter space. We apply Poincaré's Polyhedron theorem to this action. We describe a decomposition of ordered Auter space. From these results, we deduce that the algebraic mapping class group of S is a quotient of the fundamental group of a graph of groups with, at most, two vertices and, at most, six edges. Vertex and edge groups of our graph of groups are mapping class groups of orientable surfaces with one, tw…

Development and validation of prediction model to estimate 10-year risk of all-cause mortality using modern statistical learning methods: a large pop…

2021

Abstract Background In increasingly ageing populations, there is an emergent need to develop a robust prediction model for estimating an individual absolute risk for all-cause mortality, so that relevant assessments and interventions can be targeted appropriately. The objective of the study was to derive, evaluate and validate (internally and externally) a risk prediction model allowing rapid estimations of an absolute risk of all-cause mortality in the following 10 years. Methods For the model development, data came from English Longitudinal Study of Ageing study, which comprised 9154 population-representative individuals aged 50–75 years, 1240 (13.5%) of whom died during the 10-year follo…

Rays hamper intrusive growth of vessel elements

2021

Key message In some circumstances vessel elements, both broad and narrow, enlarge only symplastically in tangential direction. Rays play a special role in regulating intrusive enlargement of vessel elements. Abstract The aim of this study was to analyse relations occurring between vessel elements and surrounding cells, i.e. susceptibility to separation of walls of cells occurring in the vicinity of vessel elements, with regard to their type—cells of the axial/radial system. On the basis of separation/lack of separation of cell walls, and thus change in cell contacts/lack of change in cell contacts, we have estimated the contribution of particular types of growth—intrusive and symplastic—in …

Tra mito e modello. Le cattedrali normanne nell'architettura religiosa del Cinquecento in Italia meridionale

2021

Media’s portrayal of CAM: Exploring 40 years of narratives and meanings in public discourse

2021

The media are a key element in being able to assess how the climate of public opinion regarding Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) has evolved over the years. The aim of this study is to explore the variation of the media representations along 40 years (1979–2018) in Spanish newspapers to assess if the press has contributed to legitimise, delegitimise or maintain the status quo of these therapies. From quantitative and qualitative approaches, we evaluate the media attention, the narratives, linguistic terms and tone used, and the relations between them. Results indicate the media reporting on CAM has remained relatively stable during the first 37 years (1979–2015) of the study, …

Shared socioeconomic pathways for climate change research in Finland: co-developing extended SSP narratives for agriculture

2021

AbstractShared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs), developed at global scale, comprise narrative descriptions and quantifications of future world developments that are intended for climate change scenario analysis. However, their extension to national and regional scales can be challenging. Here, we present SSP narratives co-developed with stakeholders for the agriculture and food sector in Finland. These are derived from intensive discussions at a workshop attended by approximately 39 participants offering a range of sectoral perspectives. Using general background descriptions of the SSPs for Europe, facilitated discussions were held in parallel for each of four SSPs reflecting very different c…

Vertical grid refinement for stratocumulus clouds in the radiation scheme of a global climate model

2021

Abstract. In this study, we implement a vertical grid refinement scheme in the radiation routine of the global aerosol-climate model ECHAM-HAM, aiming to improve the representation of stratocumulus clouds and address the underestimation of their cloud cover. The scheme is based on a reconstruction of the temperature inversion as a physical constraint for the cloud top. On the refined grid, the boundary layer and the free troposphere are separated and the cloud's layer is made thinner. The cloud cover is re-calculated either by conserving the cloud volume (SC-VOLUME) or by using the Sundqvist cloud cover routine on the new grid representation (SC-SUND). In global climate simulations, we find…

Forest multifunctionality is not resilient to intensive forestry

2021

AbstractThere is ample evidence that intensive management of ecosystems causes declines in biodiversity as well as in multiple ecosystem services, i.e., in multifunctionality. However, less is known about the permanence and reversibility of these responses. To gain insight into whether multifunctionality can be sustained under intensive management, we developed a framework building on the concept of resilience: a system’s ability to avoid displacement and to return or transform to a desired state. We applied it to test the ability of forest multifunctionality to persist during and recover from intensive management for timber production in a boreal forest. Using forest growth simulations and…

Enhancement of Static and Fatigue Strength of Short Sisal Fiber Biocomposites by Low Fraction Nanotubes

2021

AbstractThanks to good mechanical performances, high availability, low cost and low weight, the agave sisalana fiber allows to obtain biocomposites characterised by high specific properties, potentially very attractive for the replacement of synthetic materials in various industrial fields. Unfortunately, due to the low strength versus transversal damage processes mainly related to the matrix brittleness and/or to the low fiber/matrix adhesion, the tensile performance of random short fiber biocomposites are quite low, and to date most of the fiber treatments proposed in literature to improve the fiber-matrix adhesion, have not led to very satisfactory results. In order to overcome such a dr…

Classification of Congeneric and QSAR of Homologous Antileukemic S–Alkylcysteine Ketones

2021

Based on a set of six vector properties, the partial correlation diagram is calculated for a set of 28 S-alkylcysteine diazomethyl- and chloromethyl-ketone derivatives. Those with the greatest antileukemic activity in the same class correspond to high partial correlations. A periodic classification is performed based on information entropy. The first four characteristics denote the group, and the last two indicate the period. Compounds in the same period and, especially, group present similar properties. The most active substances are situated at the bottom right. Nine classes are distinguished. The principal component analysis of the homologous compounds shows five subclasses included in t…

Influence of ferric iron dosing on aerobic granular sludge: granule formation, nutrient removal and microbial community

2021

BACKGROUND: Three lab-scale sequencing batch reactors were used to investigate the effects of Fe3+ on aerobic granular sludge (AGS) formation, nutrient removal, and microbial community. RESULTS: The addition of 6 and 12 mg Fe3+ L−1 could not shorten the granulation time. However, compared to the reactor without Fe3+ addition (average sludge volume index at 30 min (SVI30) 70.8 mL g−1; stable average particle size 548 μm), the addition of 12 mg Fe3+ L−1 helped improve the physical properties of AGS (average SVI30 57.0 mL g−1; stable average particle size 1067 μm). Furthermore, with 12 mg Fe3+ L−1 addition (Fe3+ to PO43−-P molar ratio = 1.33), effective removal of NH4+-N (≤0.5 mg L−1) and PO43…

Experimental and theoretical study of dense YBO3 and the influence of non-hydrostaticity.

2021

[EN] YBO3 is used in photonics applications as a host for red phosphors due to its desirable chemical stability, high quantum efficiency and luminescence intensity. Despite its fundamental thermodynamic nature, the isothermal bulk modulus of YBO3 has remained a contentious issue due to a lack of comprehensive experimental and theoretical data and its vibrational modes are far from being understood. Here, we present an experimental-theoretical structural and vibrational study of YBO3. From structural data obtained from synchrotron X-ray diffraction data and ab initio calculations, we have determined the YBO3 bulk modulus, isothermal compressibility tensor and pressure-volume (P-V) equation o…

Object Classification Technique for mmWave FMCW Radars using Range-FFT Features

2021

In this article, we present a novel target classification technique by mmWave frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) Radars using the Machine Learning on raw data features obtained from range fast Fourier transform (FFT) plot. FFT plots are extracted from the measured raw data obtained with a Radar operating in the frequency range of 77- 81 GHz. The features such as peak, width, area, standard deviation, and range on range FFT plot peaks are extracted and fed to a machine learning model. Two light weight classification models such as Logistic Regression, Naive Bayes are explored to assess the performance. Based on the results, we demonstrate and achieve an accuracy of 86.9% using Logist…

Nouvelle approche pour l'estimation du rythme respiratoire basée sur la photopléthysmographie sans contact

2021

Respiratory rhythm is important information in medical context. Its assessment allows to predict some medical complications that could lead to death. However, it is often neglected by the medical staff due to a bad comprehension of its importance, or a lack of time.Automated measurement methods allow to improve this by continuously giving respiratory rate. Most of these methods needs a contact with the patient to efficiently measure the breathing rate.Unfortunately it leads to some issues which could forbid measurement or make it unconfortable for continuous monitoring. The continuous, every-day monitoring especially needs to be as discrete as possible to be forgotten by the patient. To deal wit…

New particle formation inside ice clouds: In-situ observations in the tropical tropopause layer of the 2017 Asian Monsoon Anticyclone

2021

Abstract. From 27 July to 10 August 2017 the airborne StratoClim mission took place in Kathmandu, Nepal where eight mission flights were conducted with the M-55 Geophysica up to altitudes of 20 km. New Particle Formation (NPF) was identified by the abundant presence of ultrafine aerosols, with particle diameters dp smaller than 15 nm, which were in-situ detected by means of condensation nuclei counting techniques. NPF fields in clear-skies as well as in the presence of cloud ice particles (dp > 3 µm) were encountered at upper troposphere/lowermost stratosphere (UT/LS) levels and within the Asian Monsoon Anticyclone (AMA). NPF-generated ultrafine particles in elevated concentrations (Nuf)…

Spectrum and Morphology of the Very-High-Energy Source HAWC J2019+368

2021

The MGRO J2019+37 region is one of the brightest sources in the sky at TeV energies. It was detected in the 2 year HAWC catalog as 2HWC J2019+367 and here we present a detailed study of this region using data from HAWC. This analysis resolves the region into two sources: HAWC J2019+368 and HAWC J2016+371. We associate HAWC J2016+371 with the evolved supernova remnant CTB 87, although its low significance in this analysis prevents a detailed study at this time. An investigation of the morphology (including possible energy dependent morphology) and spectrum for HAWC J2019+368 is the focus of this work. We associate HAWC J2019+368 with PSR J2021+3651 and its X-ray pulsar wind nebula, the Drago…

2021

INTRODUCTION: The role of augmented internal anal sphincter (IAS) tone in the genesis of chronic anal fissure (CAF) is still unclear. Lateral internal sphincterotomy (LIS) is the most employed surgical procedure, aiming to reduce the IAS tone leaving a permanent anatomical alteration and it is burdened by high risk post-operative anal incontinence (AI). The aim of this work was to evaluate if the pre-operative manometric alterations of CAFs with hypertonic IAS would normalize after sphincter preserving surgical procedure. METHODS: We enrolled 108 consecutive patients affected by idiopathic and non-recurrent CAF undergone fissurectomy and anoplasty with V-Y cutaneous flap advancement and pha…

Chess recognition using 3D patterned illumination camera

2021

Computer Vision has been applied to augment traditional board games such as Chess for a number of reasons. While augmented reality enhances the gaming experience, the required additional hardware (e.g. head gear) is still not widely accepted in everyday leisure activities, and therefore, camera based methods have been developed to interface the computer with the real-life chess board. However, traditional 2D camera approaches suffer from ill-defined environmental conditions (lighting, viewing angle) and are therefore severely limited in their application. To answer this issue, we have incorporated a consumer-grade depth camera based on patterned illumination. We could show that in combinati…
