Abstract The 2-enoyl-CoA hydratase/3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (HD) is the second enzyme of the peroxisomal β-oxidation pathway. In human and rat, only one HD mRNA has been so far detected in the liver. This paper reports for the first time in a mammal species, the guinea pig, the cloning and sequencing of two cDNAs encoding an HD. The 3,274 nucleotide-cDNA is a strictly identical but longer copy of the 2,494 nucleotide-form. A 2,178 by-open reading frame encodes a protein of 726 amino acids ( M r 79.3 kDa) with the peroxisomal-targeting signal (tripeptide SKL) at the carboxyterminus. Tracheal strips from normal and actively sensitized guinea pigs were studied to determine the responses to serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT ; 1 nM - 0.1 mM) and ouabain (0.1 μM - 0.1 mM), and the effects of increasing the extracellular calcium (Ca o ) concentration on tonic contractions elicited by 5-HT. Sensitized trachea exhibited an increased responsiveness and sensitivity to 5-HT and ouabain. Increases in Ca o to achieve final concentrations of 5, 10 and 20 mM caused concentration-related relaxations of normal and sensitized tissues contracted to a similar plateau level with 5-HT. The effects of ouabain and K(+)-free solution were studied in estrogen-primed rat uterine strips under resting tone or repeatedly stimulated with KCl, acetylcholine or oxytocin applied for 20 minutes at 60 minute intervals. These effects were compared with those of the K+ channel opener cromakalim. In preparations under resting tone, ouabain (0.1 mM and 0.3 mM) induced rhythmic contractions which disappeared after 20-30 minutes whereas at a higher concentration (1 mM) it evoked a rapid, phasic response followed by a small tonic contraction. Salix tarraconensis Pau ex Font Quer, an endemic willow species from northeast Spain, was micropropagated with nodal segments. Shoot multiplication was obtained with different cytokinins, either on Murashige and Skoog medium or woody plant medium. Best results for shoot formation were obtained on Murashige and Skoog medium containing 4.9 μM of 6-γ-γ-dimethylallylaminopurine. Shoots showed strong apical dominance, and some cultures displayed apical necrosis. Benzyladenine gave the worst results; shoots displayed very slow growth, deformed leaves, and hyperhydrity. The prepaparation of amorphous, homogeneous blends of zwitterionic polymers with various low molecular weight salts, and in particular with ionic dyes was studied. Homogeneous miscibility was achieved in many cases up to equimolar amounts of salt, even for bulky compounds. Whether miscibility is achieved, or not, depends in a subtle way on the chemical structure of the salt, but no obvious correlation between structure and miscibility could yet be revealed. Spectral shifts of the dye UV/Vis spectra in solution as well as in bulk suggest strong interactions between the polybetaines and the admired salts.

The reasons for the low activity of vanadium-based Ziegler-Natta catalysts in the polymerization of ethylene have been discussed. A very easy and rapid reduction of vanadium(IV) as well as vanadium(III) to the inactive vanadium(II) form by an organoaluminum cocatalyst in the VOCl3/Et2AlCl system was confirmed. Deactivation of active sites was found to increase as the catalyst aging time and polymerization temperature are increased. Caso optométrico: exceso acomodativo tipo II inducido por estrés visual punto próximo

En este trabajo se trata de un caso clínico de exceso acomodativo que se sale de los signos tradicionales establecidos, denominándolo tipo II o espasmo acomodativo funcional. Esta alteración se produce habitualmente en época de exámenes, dándose cada vez con mayor asiduidad en consulta. Se describe el diagnóstico y el tratamiento para esta disfunción. Entre los signos que se salen de la norma está el ARP < ARN, las pupilas son normales. Como tratamiento se adaptaron lentes progresivas, junto con consejos de ergonomía visual. Como tratamiento secundario se realizó terapia visual.

Reconstrucción ósea acetabular con cotilos no cementados y aporte de aloinjerto en la artroplastia total de cadera : estudio de 35 casos

Se han revisado 35 arlroplastias realizadas en 29 pacientes portadores de algún tipo de defecto óseo en el cotilo por fallo de prótesis total de cadera. En el presente estudio incluimos sólo las reconstrucciones acetabulares efectuadas con implantes no cementados. La edad media fue de 60 años (29/79), siendo 19 mujeres y 10 varones. Clasificamos los defectos óseos siguiendo a D'Antonio en segmentarios, cavitarios y mixtos, y para la reparación de dichos defectos utilizamos aloinjerto criopreservado en todos los casos excepto uno, tratado con injerto liofilizado. An automatic procedure for the online recognition of REM sleep appears to be a necessary tool for selective REM sleep deprivation in depressive patients. To develop such a procedure we applied an artificial neural network to preprocessed single-channel EEG activity. EOG and EMG information was purposely not provided as input to the network. A generalized back-propagation algorithm was used for computer simulation. —Se ha realizado un estudio retrospectivo de los casos de traumatismo raquídeo atendidos en urgencias de nuestro centro desde 1987 hasta 1995. Del total de 159.202 niños atendidos en dicho período, el 1,8% sufría algún tipo de patología traumática de la columna, de los cuales requirieron ingreso 45 casos. Se analizan la distribución por edad, los factores etiológicos y la localización de la lesión. En 4 casos existió afectación neurológica, 2 de ellos con paraplejía completa. Se presentan 50 fracturas diafisarias de fémur tratadas mediante enclavamiento endomedular encerrojado de Grosse-Kempf. Realizamos un estudio retrospectivo utilizando para la valoración del resultado la escala de Thorensen, que considera la existencia de callos viciosos radiológicos, la flexión de rodilla, la dismetría y la presencia de dolor e inflamación. El resultado a los 20 meses del tratamiento (12-27) es excelente en 32 casos, bueno en 13, regular en 4 y malo en 1.
