Solution properties of polyelectrolytes XII. Semi-quantitative approach to mixed electrostatic and hydrophobic polymer-gel interactions

1996

Abstract Aqueous size-exclusion chromatography of polyanions, where secondary effects affect the total separation mechanism, was investigated. For elution of polyelectrolytes on inorganic silica-based supports, the electrostatic polymer-gel repulsive interactions were evaluated through the values for a hypothetical repulsion layer, X e , according to the model developed by other workers. Using a similar procedure, the existence of an effective barrier defined as X e − X h is proposed for those systems in which electrostatic repulsion and hydrophobic interactions take place simultaneously as secondary mechanisms. X h can be viewed as a measure of the “enlargement” of the geometrical pore rad…

CD4 monoclonal antibody VIT4 in human alloimmune response in vitro and in vivo.

1996

In the present report the immunosuppressive effects of the murine anti-human CD4 monoclonal antibody (mAb) VIT4 on human alloimmune response in vitro were analyzed. Moreover, the antibody was tested for its activity to prolong allograft survival in seven patients with steroid-refractory allograft rejection. VIT4 inhibited the proliferative response to alloantigens in the mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) in a dose-dependent manner. At concentrations of 1 and 10 micrograms/ml VIT4 blocked MLR by 55 +/- 11% and 77 +/- 1%, respectively. Also alloantigen-specific proliferation of in vitro- generated memory T cells was dose-dependently reduced to 23 +/- 1% at a VIT4 concentration of 100 micrograms…

Evolution of ammonoid morphospace during the Early Jurassic radiation

1996

The morphologic radiation of Early Jurassic ammonites following the near extinction at the end of the Triassic is analyzed from 436 species of 156 genera that form a representative sample of morphs occurring worldwide in the first three stages of the Jurassic (Hettangian, Sinemurian, Pliensbachian: 36 subzones, 24 m.y.). Morphologic diversity is analyzed independently of taxonomy by processing 18 shape parameters using multivariate analysis and clustering techniques. The morphospace thus defined indicates that morphs fall readily into two groups made up of four and five adjacent morpho-subsets. The temporal pattern of morphospace occupation in the 36 Lower Jurassic subzones displays diversi…

Chromophobe Renal Cell Carcinoma

1996

SUMMARY A case ofchromophobe renal cell carcinoma is reported in a 73 year-old man. Light microscopically, the tumor was composed of polygonal cells with a slightly eosinophilic and a fine reticular pattern, and a reaction of the cytoplasm with Hale's acid iron colloid. Ultrastructural analysis showed membranous microuesicles within the tumor cells, with degenerated mitochondria. Immunohistochemical profile against intermediate filaments was positive to cytokeratin 18 and negative against uimentin. Flow cytometry and cytogenetics revealed a predominant bypertriploid population. Few cases have been published with flow cytometry and cytogenetic findings. We report a new case.

Two mutations in gB-1 and gD-1 of herpes simplex virus type 1 are involved in the "fusion from without" phenotype in different cell types.

1996

Previous studies have shown that certain strains of herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) are able to induce “fusion from without” (FFWO) which means no transcription or translation of the viral genome happens. The main determinants for FFWO in BHK cells are mutations in the C-terminal part of gB-1. But single mutations in this part of the genome are not sufficient to transfer the FFWO phenotype also to Vero cells. Here, we report that FFWO of HSV strains indeed need additional mutations in the N-terminal part of gD in order to produce the FFWO phenotype in BHK and Vero cells. By marker transfer we are able to show that loss of mutations in the N-terminal part of gD influences the ability t…

Prophenoloxidase activating system in tunicate hemolymph

1996

The activation sequence and related factors of the prophenoloxidase activating system in crustaceans was compared with the equivalent system in tunicates. Both solitary and colonial ascidians present in their hemolymph a copper-dependent phenoloxidase activity that may be inhibited by tropolone and phenylthiourea. Carbohydrates are able, to various extents, to trigger proPO system which requires serine protease cleavage for activation to phenoloxidase (PO). In some ascidians, hemocytes called ≪morula cells≫ show PO activity, while in Ciona intestinalis the ≪univacuolar refractile granulocytes≫ are positive after cytochemical staining with L-dopa. The relationships between proPO system and d…

Eracle e l'elemento femminile in Sicilia.

1996

Identification of the T-cell receptors (TCR) used by synovial cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) of patients with reactive arthritis (ReA) may be crucial to better understanding the pathogenetic mechanism underlying the HLA-B27 association of spondylarthropathies. The authors, therefore, sequenced 25 TCRB chains from HLA-B27-restricted CD8+ CTL clones and two clonal lines specific for self- or Yersinia enterocolitica antigen isolated from synovial fluids of 3 HLA-B27+ patients with ReA and PBL of one healthy HLA-B27+ individual. Fourteen non-HLA-B27-restricted CTL served as controls. Both autoreactive and Y. enterocolitica specific HLA-B27-restricted CTL used a highly limited set of VB genes wit…

Determination of the Absolute Density of Fe3+ and Ni2+ Ions in Langmuir-Blodgett Films

1996

By means of the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique, mono- and multilayers of Ni2+ and Fe3+ containing fatty acid salts are transferred onto silicon wafers. After thermal treatment, oxidic layers can be produced. The absolute amounts of Fe3+ and Ni2+ ions per monolayer of LB film were measured and calculated by three different methods. In the case of nickel, the amount expected from theory and preparation conditions was obtained experimentally. In contrast, about twice the number of Fe3+ ions as expected is transferred. An explanation can be given by the presence of hydroxide groups bound to iron. The mean film thickness of the oxidic layers after thermal treatment was estimated where the thic…

Kinetic Analysis of “Living” Polymerization Processes Exhibiting Slow Equilibria. 5. Effect of Monomer Transfer in Cationic Polymerization and Simila…

1996

This work deals with the kinetics of polymerization processes with chain transfer to monomer and reversible formation of dormant species. Such a mechanism is typical for cationic polymerization in the presence of Lewis acids as co-initiators. The expressions of number- and weight-average degrees of polymerization and polydispersity index are derived rigorously for a mechanism with free ions as the active species, but it is also applied to other mechanisms, e.g., ion pairs as active species. Plots of polydispersity index versus monomer conversion can be easily computed on a PC computer even though the expressions for the weight-average degree of polymerization and the concentration of residu…

Chapter 8 Nicotinic receptors of the vertebrate CNS: introductory remarks

1996

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the nicotinic receptors of the vertebrate central nervous system (CNS). In vertebrates, nicotinic cholinergic neurotransmission is found in both the CNS and the periphery (muscle endplate). Although muscle and neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) have evolved from a common ancestor, it is striking that the muscle receptor has remained rather stable in evolution, whereas the neuronal receptor has evolved to a wide diversity of subtypes. As an attractive hypothesis, neurotransmitters and neurohormones may not only interact with their archetypic cognate receptors but also with other neuroreceptor, albeit in a modulatory fashion. By modula…

Cloning and characterization of a cDNA coding forCandida albicanspolyubiquitin

1996

Immunoscreening of a Candida albicans cDNA library in the expression vector lambda gt11 with rabbit polyclonal antibodies against the 37 kDa cell surface laminin receptor of C albicans resulted in the isolation of a cDNA clone of 0.9 kb. Sequencing of this clone demonstrated a full length open reading frame encoding the polyubiquitin, which contains three tandem copies, head-to-tail spacerless repeats, of the 228 nucleotides coding for the 76 amino acids of the ubiquitin protein, which is identical to that of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The third copy possesses an extra C-terminal amino acid which is distinct to that found in S. cerevisiae. Northern blot analysis revealed a single mRNA popula…

Mito e storia nelle isole Eolie

1996
