Translations, Paratextual Mediation, and Ideological Closure

1996

Abstract: This article deals with the way so-called paratexts were used, in Finland in 1890-1939, in publishing translations of Anglo-American literature, and especially with the tendencies towards ideological closure that those paratexts manifest. The dominant ideology in the material is what could be called religious-conservative ideology, emphasizing the thought content of the works and their (educative, civilizing, sometimes also entertaining) impact on readers. This is due to the ideological unification process that penetrated the cultural institutions, which were still relatively undifferentiated and non-autonomous during the period in Finland. The article emphasizes that in studying …

Modelling Optical Resonators Probed by Subwavelength Sized Optical Detectors

1996

The possibility of mapping the optical field structure inside a Fabry-Perot resonator by using a pointed optical fiber was recently reported [1]. In this contribution, we propose a simulation of such near-field optical experiments by using a two-dimensional self-consistent model. The method based on the discretization of four different domains, i.e. the two mirrors, the glass sample and the tip, allows us a meaningful description of the evolution of the full field pattern when approaching the optical detector. In particular, this computerized work supply a direct illustration of the optical energy tranfer occurring when the tip enters the near-field zone. In this context, different tip desi…

Mode and Rate of Growth in Ammonoids

1996

In this chapter we discuss the mode and rate of growth in ammonoids, focusing primarily on postembryonic growth. We first discuss the general mode of growth and then describe the ontogenetic sequence of growth stages. These stages are recognized on the basis of changes in morphology. For example, a graph of the increase in size of whorl width versus shell diameter in an individual reveals changes through ontogeny that pinpoint the end of one growth stage and the beginning of another. We next discuss the overall rate of growth through ontogeny and establish a generalized growth curve. In this discussion, we refer to other cephalopods whose rate of growth is known. Fluctuations in the rate of…

Dynamical heterogeneities in glass-forming materials

1996

ABSTRACTCooperative dynamics around the glass transition leads to complex motional behavior of the individual molecules, resulting in non-exponential relaxation. The nature of this non-exponentiality is clarified theoretically as well as experimentally. The non-exponentiality may be due to heterogeneous relaxation (superposition of exponential processes with different rate constants) or homogeneous relaxation (identical intrinsically non-exponential processes). A precise definition of both limits is given. It is shown that the type of relaxation, i.e. to which degree heterogeneous and homogeneous contributions are present, reflects geometrical properties of the dynamics. The heterogeneous c…

An interface model for analysis of deformation behaviour of discontinuities

1996

An interface constitutive model is presented accounting for slip and sliding effects and also for dilatancy phenomena. The microslip effects are described by considering spherical asperity interaction with variation of contact area and generation of progressive or reverse slip zones. The incremental constitutive equations are derived with proper memory rules accounting for generation and annihilation of particular slip zones during the process of variable loading. It is further assumed that sliding of spherical contacts occurs along large asperities whose slope varies due to the wear process. The predicted shear and dilatancy curves are shown to provide close quantitative simulation of avai…

TCE adsorption on hydrophobic Y and MFI zeolites. Possibilities of using such materials for solvent recovery

1996

Chromosomes and the origins of Apes and Australopithecines

1996

International audience; Comparison of molecular data suggests that the higher apes (Gorilla, Pan) and humankind (Homo) are closely related and that they diverged from the common ancestor through two speciation events situated very closely together in time. Examination of the chromosomal formulas of the living species reveals a paradox on the distribution of mutated chromosomes which can only be re-solved by a model of trichotomic diversification. This new model of divergence from the common ancestor is characterized by the transition from (1) a monotypic phase to (2) a polytypic phase of three sub-species - pre-gorilla, pre-chimpanzee and pre-australopithecine. The quadruped ancestors of Au…

Tau leptonic branching ratios

1996

A sample of 62249 tau-pair events is selected from data taken with the ALEPH detector in 1991, 1992 and 1993. The measurement of the branching fractions for tau decays into electrons and muons is presented with emphasis on the study of systematic effects from selection, particle identification and decay classification. The results obtained are: B-e=17.79+/-0.12(stat)+/-0.06(syst)(%) and B-mu=17.31+/-0.11(stat)+/-0.05(syst)(%). Combined with the most recent ALEPH determination of the tau lifetime, these results provide a relative measurement of the leptonic couplings in the weak charged current for transverse W bosons: g(mu)/g(e)=1.0002+/-0.0051 and g(tau)/g(mu)=0.9943+/-0.0065. The effect of complementary irrigation on fruit growth, ripening pattern and oil characteristics of olive (Olea europaea L.) cv. Carolea

1996

SummaryComplementary irrigation, 80 mm, distributed only during the third stage of fruit development, delayed ripening time and increased fruit size and oil content for fruits of the olive cv. Carolea. Prolonged water deficit reduced fruit growth, oil accumulation rate, K content of the fruit and enhanced ripening and pre-harvest fruit drop. Harvest time affected oil characteristics more than the water availability. Fatty acid composition was not affected by the water regime but polyphenol content increased and alcohol content decreased in the oil produced by irrigated trees.

Simultaneous influence on male courtship of stimulatory and inhibitory pheromones produced by live sex-mosaic Drosophila melanogaster

1996

0962-8452 (Print) Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; Stable strains of Drosophila melanogaster flies producing mosaic sex-pheromones were created by manipulating the sex-determination gene transformer in different cellular patterns. Chromosomally male flies produced molecules that were partly or totally feminized, depending upon the strain. The influence on male courtship behaviour of live flies producing different mixtures of male and female pheromones was measured. The intensity of the male response was mainly a function of the stimulatory effect of 7, 11 nonacosadiene and 7, 11 heptacosadiene, two female pheromones, combined with the inhibiting effect of 7-tricosene, the m…

Effective coefficients of thermoconductivity on some symmetric periodically perforated plane structures

1996

In this article we discuss an auxiliary problem which arises in the homogenization theory for the Laplacian on the plane with periodic array of square holes and homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions on those. Independently, this problem describes the process of thermoconductivity. We find the explicit formulas for effective coefficients of thermoconductivity (homogenized modula). We make also the asymptotic analysis of these formulas in the cases of big and small holes.

MetaEdit+ A Fully Configurable Multi-User and Multi-Tool CASE and CAME Environment

1996

Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) environments have spread at a lower pace than expected. One reason for this is the immaturity of existing environments in supporting development in-the-large and by-many and their inability to address the varying needs of the software developers. In this paper we report on the development of a next generation CASE environment called MetaEdit+. The environment seeks to overcome all the above deficiencies, but in particular pays attention to catering for the varying needs of the software developers. MetaEdit+ is a multi-method, multi-tool platform for both CASE and Computer Aided Method Engineering (CAME). As a CASE tool it establishes a versatile an…

1996

For most (aerobic) animal organisms, oxygen is a mandatory and global substrate. The accurate measurement of oxygen is therefore of importance in the fields of medicine, biology, environmental research and biotechnology. The fact that oxygen is not readily soluble in aqueous media makes its detection more difficult. In contrast to the technique of polarography, the use of luminescence quenching by paramagnetic oxygen, does not consume the oxygen. Another problem of oxygen detection in connection with respiration is the need for very short response times. A third problem, which is associated with luminescence itself, is the fading of the dyes, which results in long-term signal instability. T…

Sonographic size of uterus and ovaries in pre- and postmenopausal women

1996

Uterine and ovarian size were measured in 765 pre- and postmenopausal women by transvaginal ultrasound. Of these, 263 (premenopausal, n = 155; postmenopausal, n = 108) were found to have neither uterine nor ovarian pathological findings. According to parity, premenopausal women were separated into three groups: nullipara, primipara and multipara. Postmenopausal women were separated into two groups according to years since menopause: 5 years since menopause. In the premenopausal group, a parity-related enlargement in uterine size was observed between nulliparous and parous women. After the menopause, a significant reduction in uterine size and in the corpus-cervix ratio was observed. The red…

World-wide variation in Drosophila melanogaster sex pheromone: behavioural effects, genetic bases and potential evolutionary consequences

1996

0016-6707 (Print) Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; In Drosophila melanogaster, male wing vibration, a key element of courtship behaviour, is most efficiently induced by a female-specific contact pheromone cis, cis 7,11 heptacosadiene (7,11 HD), which is the main mature female cuticular hydrocarbon in the CS laboratory strain. A study of 63 strains from around the world revealed that flies from Sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean are unique in showing low levels 7,11 HD and high levels of the position isomer 5,9 HD. This difference maps to chromosome III, perhaps indicating a simple genetic control of the 7,11 HD:5,9 HD ratio. Females from strains with high levels of 7,11 H…
