Atomistic Study of Surface Polarization in Superconducting Perovskites

1996

AbstractWe simulated the surface relaxation of the cubic perovskite paraelectric SrTiO3 crystal. The atomic positions in ten near-surface layers placed into the electrostatic field of the remainder of the crystal were calculated. Two-dimensional, periodic slab model was combined with the pair potentials treated in terms of the shell-model. Our calculations show that Ti+4, Sr+2 and O−2 ions shift differently from their crystal sites. This leads to a creation of a dipole moment near the surface which might give the paraelectric crystal the ferroelectric properties.

Fusion of visual tools in virtual spaces

1996

Virtual space environment may be improved by combining it with graphical and visual tools. This paper analyses an integrated system able to merge fusion techniques, icons tools and a virtual space environment. A virtual space is characterised by a set of dynamic visual icons and by a heterogeneous virtual reality environment. Their integration is supported by virtual icon grammar (VIG) working on dynamic icons and virtual world. VIG allows to test the actions made by dynamic icons on the activated Virtual World metaphors at a time “t”, and a range of different transactions that place between user and VW(visual query, view and browse of under-world,...), moreover, user can define, modify and…

Du collège d'enseignement technique au lycée professionnel : une intégration progressive dans le second cycle

1996

From technical schooling to vocational high school : gradual integration in the second cycle. The vocational high school integration in the second cycle was carried out within the scope of administration, sometimes antagonistic, of firstly social functions then economic, successively favoured in training centres. From the 1980's onwards, basic changes in the conception of workers' training were brought about by reforms. This resulted in important changes in orientation, administration in academic establishments, where innovating teaching practices coexist with lasting sociological sluggishness.

A method to isolate cDNA-quality RNA from adult conifer needles and a psbA cDNA from Norway spruce

1996

Summary In order to investigate the expression of the psbA gene in damaged and undamaged Norway spruce trees ( Picea abies ) a cDNA clone encoding the D1 protein was isolated via RT-PCR. Applying a method developed by Schneiderbauer et al. (1991) with some modifications, we were able to obtain the required RNA from mature needles and successfully reverse transcribe it into cDNA. Sequence analysis of the cDNA clone revealed an open reading frame (ORF) encoding a 353 amino acid polypeptide that is highly homologous to the D1 protein sequences deduced from higher plant psbA genes. A 4 bp insertion, directly following the stop codon ochre (TAA), was found by comparison with two Pinus species, t…

Indication of an order-order-transition by a partial disordering in ABC-triblock copolymers

1996

Poly(ethylene-alt-propylene)-block-polyethylethylene-block-polystyrene (PEP-b-PEE-b-PS) triblock copolymers were synthesized by anionic polymerization and subsequent hydrogenation of poly-1,4-isoprene-block-poly-1,2-butadiene-block-polystyrene triblock copolymers (1,4PI-b-1,2PB-b-PS). Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical spectroscopy reveal an order-order transition which is induced by the mixing of PEP and PEE above their respective order-disorder transition (ODT).

Self-assembly of biopolymeric structures below the threshold of random cross-link percolation

1996

Self-assembly of extended structures via cross-linking of individual biomolecules often occurs in solutions at concentrations well below the estimated threshold for random cross-link percolation. This requires solute-solute correlations. Here we study bovine serum albumin. Its unfolding causes the appearance of an instability region of the sol, not observed for native bovine serum albumin. As a consequence, spinodal demixing of the sol is observed. The thermodynamic phase transition corresponding to this demixing is the determinative symmetry-breaking step allowing the subsequent occurrence of (correlated) cross-linking and its progress up to the topological phase transition of gelation. Th…

Continuous Phase Transitions at Surfaces of CuAu Alloy Models — A Monte Carlo Study of Surface Induced Order and Disorder

1996

The influence of surface on phase transitions has found significant attention in recent years, and a number of excellent reviews exists. [1, 2, 3] A variety of complex phenomena occur which are also related to the physics of adsorption and wetting. The scenario of wetting requires three distinct phases, for instance the vacuum, the bulk phase and a third phase intervening in between at equilibrium. In case of surface induced disorder (SID, a film of disordered layers at the surface “wets” the bulk phase as the temperature approaches the bulk transition temperature T c,b. The transition at the surface may be continuous (standard critical wetting phenomena), and, as theoretically investigated…

Symmetry operators in computer vision

1996

Abstract Symmetry plays a remarkable role in perception problems. For example, peaks of brain activity are measured in correspondence with visual patterns showing symmetry . Relevance of symmetry in vision was already noted by Koler in 1929. Here, properties of a symmetry operator are reported and a new algorithm to measure local symmetries is proposed. Its performance is tested on segmentation of complex visual patterns and the classification of sparse images.

Ionization Energies of ClO and Cl2O2

1996

The ionization energies of chlorine oxide (ClO) and its dimer (Cl2O2) have been measured using monochromatic synchrotron radiation in the 10−20 eV energy regime in combination with photoionization mass spectrometry. The threshold energy of ClO+ (m/z = 51) is found at 10.85 ± 0.05 eV, whereas the ionization threshold of Cl2O2+ (m/z = 102) occurs at 11.05 ± 0.05 eV. The experimental values are compared to results from ab initio calculations, where three stable isomers of Cl2O2 are considered:  dichlorine peroxide (ClOOCl), chloryl chloride (ClClO2), and chlorine chlorite (ClOClO). The results indicate that the experimental threshold energy of Cl2O2+ is due to adiabatic ionization of ClOOCl. T…

Topologie der Zelle

1996

Basic Concepts and the Discovery of Solitons

1996

Today, many scientists see nonlinear science as the most deeply important frontier for the fundamental understanding of Nature. The soliton concept was firmly established after a gestation period of about one hundred and fifty years. Since then, different kinds of solitons have been observed experimentally in various real systems, and today, they have captured the imagination of scientists in most physical discipline. They are widely accepted as a structural basis for viewing and understanding the dynamic behavior of complex nonlinear systems. Before introducing the soliton concept via its remarkable and beautiful historical path we compare briefly the linear and nonlinear behavior of a sys…

Investigation of flow and heat transfer in corrugated passages—II. Numerical simulations

1996

An experimental and numerical study of flow and heat transfer was conducted for a crossed-corrugated geometry, representative of compact heat exchangers under transitional and weakly turbulent conditions. Three-dimensional numerical predictions were obtained by a finite volume method using a variety of approaches ranging from laminar flow assumptions to standard and low-Reynolds number k-e turbulence models, direct simulation, and large-eddy simulation. In this paper, the various computational approaches are presented and their relative performance is discussed for various geometries and Reynolds numbers; results are compared with experimental measurements and literature data. Phase transitions and quantum effects in adsorbed monolayers

1996

Phase transitions in absorbed (two-dimensional) fluids and in absorbed layers of linear molecules are studied with a combination of path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC), Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC), and finite size scaling techniques. For a classical (nonadditive) hard-disk fluid the “critical” nonadditivities, where the entropy-driven phase separations set in, are presented. For a fluid with internal quantum states the gas-liquid coexistence region, tricritical, and triple points can be determined, and a comparison with density functional (DFT) results shows good agreement for the freezing densities. LinearN 2 molecules adsorbed on graphite (in the √3 × √3 structure) show a transition fr…
