Chromosomes of the Parasitic Isopod Anilocra Physodes

AbstractCounts of mitotic chromosomes have allowed to determine 2n = 12 as the modal diploid number of Anilocra physodes. Application of the C-banding technique reveals that two hetero-chromatic blocks bordering the centromeric region occur in each chromosome. This supports the notion that the actual low chromosome number of A. physodes may have been derived through a process of Robertsonian fusion.

New Analgesics Designed by Molecular Topology

Molecular topology has been applied to the design of new analgesic drugs, utilizing linear discriminant analysis and connectivity functions using different topological descriptors. Of a total of 26 compounds selected, 17 showed analgesic activity. The following stood out particularly, showing analgesic values greater than 75% regarding ASA (acetylsalicylic acid), the reference drug: 2-(1-propenyl)phenol, 2′4′ dimethylacetophenone, p-chlorobenzohydrazide, 1-(p-chlorophenyl) propanol and 4-benzoyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-5-one. Fracturas de las espinas tibiales en el niño y en el adulto

Presentamos una serie de 29 fracturas de las espinas tibiales en 27 pacientes, 11 niños y 16 adultos. Para su estudio hemos seguido la clasificación de Meyers y McKeever, siendo las fracturas tipo II las más frecuentes. Se registraron las lesiones asociadas de la rodilla, y la más frecuente fue la del ligamento lateral interno; encontramos 2 fracturas de Segond en niños. El tratamiento fue conservador en 7 casos y quirúrgico en los 22 restantes. Para evaluar el resultado final estudiamos el desplazamiento de la fractura, movilidad y laxitudes residuales de la rodilla y fuerza muscular. Se presenta un caso inusual de pseudoartrosis de la novena costilla en una mujer de 22 años de edad. La pseudoartrosis de la primera costilla ha sido descrita con relativa frecuencia, pero en el resto de los arcos costales es desconocida. El diagnóstico diferencial se hizo en base a las características clínicas y radiológicas. In this paper, we reconsider the definitions of procrastinating learning machines. In the original definition of Freivalds and Smith [FS93], constructive ordinals are used to bound mindchanges. We investigate the possibility of using arbitrary linearly ordered sets to bound mindchanges in a similar way. It turns out that using certain ordered sets it is possible to define inductive inference types more general than the previously known ones. We investigate properties of the new inductive inference types and compare them to other types.

In this chapter we shall see that the solution of the time-harmonic Maxwell equations with real coefficients can be transformed to time independent partial differential equations with complex coefficients. Then we introduce a finite element approximation proposed in [Křižek, Neittaanmaki, 1989]. A similar technique is analyzed in [Křižek, Neittaanmaki, 1984b], [Monk, 1992a] (for fully time dependent problems see, e.g., [Monk 1992b,c]).

Abstract The determination of sea surface temperature from satellite is performed by means of multi-channel algorithms with channels 4 and 5 of AVHRRNOAA or using radiative transfer models and radiosounding profiles of air temperature and humidity. The mesolimbic dopaminergic system (MDS) has been shown to be implicated in feeding behaviors. The present experiment was conducted to examine the effects of the sensory properties of food ingested on MDS activity. Microdialysis coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection was employed to measure the extracellular levels of dopamine (DA) and its main metabolites (DOPAC and HVA) in the nucleus accumbens of freely moving rats. First measurement of f′2 (1525) production in Z0 hadronic decays

The inclusive production of the f(2)'(1525) in hadronic Z(0) decays has been studied in data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP. The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors were important tools in the identification of the decay f(2)'(1525) --> K+K-. The average number of f(2)(')(1525) produced per hadronic Z decay, [f(2)'] = 0.020 +/- 0.005 (stat) +/- 0.006 (syst), and the momentum distribution of the f(2)'(1525) have both been measured. The mass and width of the f(2)'(1525) are found to be [M(f2)'] = 1535 +/- 5 (stat) +/- 4 (syst) MeV/c(2). [Gamma(f2)'] = 60 +/- 20 (stat) +/- 19 (syst) MeV/c(2)

In this paper the parallel aspects of an electromagnetic model for transients in grounding systems based on an iterative scheme are investigated in a multiprocessor environment. A coarse and fine grain parallel solutions have been developed on the CRAY T3D, housed at CINECA, equipped with 64 processors working in space sharing modality. The performances of the two parallel approaches implemented according to the work sharing parallel paradigm have been evaluated for different problem sizes employing variable number of processors.

Study of polychlorinated biphenyls in street dust by supercritical fluid extraction-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry

Street dust samples have been collected from highways, urban streets, a gasoline station, a pedestrian tunnel, and railway stations in some German cities. Nine polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs from tri- to heptachlorobiphenyls) were quantitatively extracted by supercritical fluid extraction with CO2 at 200 bar and 40°C and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The highest PCB loads (sum of the nine studied PCBs) of ca. 1 to 4 μg/g have been found in the samples from motorway A60 near Mainz, while in almost all other samples PCBs could be detected at only ca. 0.1 to 1 μg/g. At three sampling sites, a winter maximum of the PCB concentrations has been found.

This study focuses on the growth of Zymomonas mobilis strain 113 S and its ethanol and levan production under the conditions of increasing sucrose medium osmolality caused by NaCl, KCl, sorbitol or maltose. The increase in medium osmolality (700-1,500 mosml/kg) was accompanied by the inhibition of growth (growth rate, biomass yield) and ethanol production (specific productivity and yield). Dynamics of a Supercooled Lennard-Jones System: Qualitative and Quantitative Tests of Mode-Coupling Theory

We present the results of a molecular dynamics computer simulation of a supercooled binary Lennard-Jones mixture. By investigating the temperature dependence of the diffusion constant and of the intermediate scattering function, we show that the ideal version of the mode-coupling theory of the glass transition is able to give a good qualitative description of the dynamics of this system. Using the partial structure factors, as determined from the simulation, as input, we solve the mode-coupling equations in the long time limit. Nevertheless, stochastic rf excitation is characterized by some remarkable features: the rf excitation power is at least two orders of magnitude lower in comparison to conventionally pulsed NMR imaging schemes.
