ABSTRACTThe effect of the [001] surface relaxation on the polarization of the paraelectric BaTiO3 is simulated in the framework of the shell model. Our atomistic simulations show a large polarization of ions in the first several layers nearby the surface and confirm the possibility of co-existence of Ti-and Ba-terminated [001] BaTiO3 surfaces which have very close surface energies.

In der Klinik fur Allgemein- und Abdominalchirurgie der Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz wurden in der Zeit von September 1985 bis Dezember 1994 76 Patienten mit Metastasen kolorektaler Primartumoren unter kurativer Zielsetzung an der Leber reseziert. Die 30-Tage-Letalitat und die Komplikationsrate betrugen 6,6 und 30,3%. Die 3- und 5-Jahres-Uberlebens-wahrscheinlichkeit nach Lebermetastasenresektion lagen bei 53 und 36%. La dirección y texto es de Benito Sanz Díaz, y la dirección técnica de Mª Ferranda Martí Campoy, directora de DISE. Clusterin is a multifunctional glycoprotein complex found in virtually all body fluids and on the surface of cells lining body cavities. Demonstrated and proposed functions include the transport of lipoproteins, the inhibition of complementmediated cell lysis and the modulation of cell-cell interactions. On the basis of its elevated expression in apoptotic tissues, it was originally proposed that the protein might be casually involved in apoptosis. Die endoskopische, extraperitoneale Adrenalektomie — Eine Erweiterung der Zugangswege zur Nebenniere

Als Alternative zur konventionellen transperitonealen Adrenalektomie fuhrten Gagner und Mitarbeiter 1992 [1] erstmalig bei zwei Patienten eine transperitoneale, laparoskopische Adrenalektomie durch. In der Folgezeit konnte sich diese Technik jedoch nicht entscheidend durchsetzen, da mit den konventionellen extraperitonealen Zugangen technisch einfachere und vermutlich ebenso schonende Verfahren zur Verfugung stehen. In der Absicht, das Operationstrauma weiter zu reduzieren, lag es daher im nachsten Schritt nahe, die Nebenniere endoskopisch von einem extraperitonealen Zugang aus zu entfernen. Im Folgenden sollen die von uns entwickelte Technik und die Ergebnisse dargestellt werden [2].

The aim of this study was to assess the ability of intravenous injection of Albunex to improve left ventricular volume determination in patients with various cardiac diseases. It is conceivable that the intravenous injection of microbubbles could improve echocardiographic left ventricular border delineation leading to improved interobserver variability. Echocardiograms were obtained during simultaneous intravenous injection of 0.08 and 0.12 ml/kg Albunex (four-chamber view). Co-ordination of copper(II) ions by prolyl-α,β-dehydroamino acids: comparative studies and general considerations

Potentiometric and spectroscopic measurements and theoretical calculations have revealed that α,β-dehydroamino acid residues have a considerable effect on the co-ordination ability of an adjacent amide nitrogen towards Cu2+ ions. Also the side chain of such residues affects the stability constants and, in some cases, the binding mode of short peptides containing α,β-dehydroamino acid residues. The theoretical calculations showed that all dehydroamino acids except α,β-dehydroalanine tend to bend a peptide chain towards a turn conformation. This has a very strong impact on the co-ordination ability of a dehydropeptide ligand.

Biochemistry of proteins that bind and metabolize juvenile hormones

A diverse group of proteins has evolved to bind and metabolize insect juvenile hormones (JHs). Synthetic radiolabeled JHs and their photoaffinity analogs have enabled us to isolate and characterize JH binding proteins (JHBPs), a putative nuclear JH receptor, JH esterases (JHEs), JH epoxide hydrolases (JHEHs), and methyl farnesoate binding proteins (MFBPs). Highlights of recent progress on structural characterization of JHBPs and JHEHs of two lepidopterans will be described. Efforts to identify MFBPs of penaeid shrimp will be discussed, and the discovery of a possible vertebrate JHBP will be presented.
