Densities, Viscosities, and Refractive Indices of Some Binary Liquid Systems of Methanol + Isomers of Hexanol at 298.15 K

Viscosities, densities, and refractive indices of eight binary liquid systems containing ethanol + some isomers of hexanol have been determined at 298.15 K. The excess property values were fitted to the Redlich-Kister equation to estimate the binary coefficients and the standard deviations.

Classification of Chitinozoa (Llandoverian, Canada) Using Image Analysis

Chitinozoa (Llandoverian, Canada) were studied using image analysis. After digitalization of the objects, shape parameters were calculated. The boundary of each fossil was then traced by a vector centred at the centroid for Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Results of the two methods were used as variables in a hierarchical cluster analysis in order to group the samples. These results show that Chitinozoa can be significantly classified in terms of taxa using independent shape parameters obtained by image analysis.

Intraseasonal variations of June?September rainfall and upper-air circulation over Kenya

In the Northern Summer, Kenya is located under the influence of the divergent Indian monsoon flow, and therefore is dry except for two separate areas: the coastal strip and the western regions. Analysis of daily rainfall data for June–September 1982 to 1988 has revealed that, although there are many distinct rainfall events between the two regions, an out-of-phase relationship is also evident, rain on the Coast being frequently accompanied by a drop in the precipitation over the Rift Valley area. The ability of human prostate cancer cells to metabolize androgens was assessed through administration of physiological concentration (0.5-10 nM) of tritiated testosterone (T) as precursor and one-step analysis of both T degradation and products' formation by reverse-phase HPLC and on-line radioactive detection after either 24 h or 72 h incubation. The *-semisemplicity is defined via a suitable family of positive sesquilinear forms and some consequences of this notion are derived. Two monoterpenoid indole alkaloids and four β-carbolines were isolated from a hydrid cell suspension culture generated from two Apocynaceous plants, Rauwolfia serpentina Benth. and Rhazya stricta Decaisne. This indicates that the function of alkoloid biosynthesis is retained after hybrid formation and that alkaloids not previously detected in the parental plants or cell cultures are formed.

“Small volume resuscitation” (SVR) is a promising concept for the treatment of shock and trauma patients. SVR utilizes the fast infusion of a small volume of hypertonic saline to mobilize intraendothelial and parenchymal water to expand and restitute intravascular volume. Can hydrophobic interactions be correctly reproduced by the continuum models?

The ability of the continuum models to describe hydrophobic interactions is investigated. In this work we have studied the interactions between two methane molecules in aqueous solution by means of a continuum model. The resulting potential of mean force is in good agreement with those obtained using Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics techniques. The three energy contributions appearing in the continuum energy partition (electrostatic, dispersion−repulsion, and cavitation) have been analyzed.
