Fréchet Spaces of Holomorphic Functions without Copies of l 1

1996

Let X be a Banach space. Let Hw*(X*) the Frechet space whose elements are the holomorphic functions defined on X* whose restrictions to each multiple mB(X*), m = 1,2, …, of the closed unit ball B(X*) of X* are continuous for the weak-star topology. A fundamental system of norms for this space is the supremum of the absolute value of each element of Hw*(X*) in mB(X*), m = 1,2,…. In this paper we construct the bidual of l1 when this space contains no copy of l1. We also show that if X is an Asplund space, then Hw*(X*) can be represented as the projective limit of a sequence of Banach spaces that are Asplund.

Production of excited beauty states in Z decays

1996

A data sample of about 3.0 million hadronicZ decays collected by the ALEPH experiment at LEP in the years 1991 through 1994 is used to make an inclusive selection of B hadron events. In this event sample 4227±140±252B* mesons in the decayB*→Bγ and 1944±108±161B** u,d mesons decaying into a B meson and a charged pion are reconstructed. Here and in the followingB** u,d denotes the eightL=1(bū) and (bd) states and their charge conjugate. For the well establishedB* meson the following quantities are obtained:ΔM=M B*−MB=(45.30±0.35±0.87) MeV/c2 andN B*/(N B+N B*)=(77.1±2.6±7.0)%.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Agents, Part 20[1] Method for Testing Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories: The Modified Hen's Egg Chorioallantoic Membr…

1996

The delay of onset of irritation phenomena at the chorioallantoic membrane of incubated hen's eggs, a parameter for anti-inflammatory activity, was determined for the pharmaceutical substances diclofenac, flufenamic acid, ibuprofen, indomethacin, ketoprofen, piroxicam, phenylbutazone, salicylic acid, and sodium salicylate. Alongside questions relating to the dose-effect ratio, metabolisation, recovery, and diffusion of the substances to their site of action were investigated. The reproducibility of the procedure and its selectivity with regard to substances with a different mechanism of action is proven. The method allows classification of the substances according to their anti-inflammatory…

Reconstructing social spaces: The rhetoric of the public/ private split

1996

Abstract The article deals with the public/private distinction as a hidden spatialization that regulates the social. It looks at restructurations of the distinction; at changes and their political consequences in terms of ongoing rhetorical boundary work. The naming or coding of something as public or private is in itself a cultured process. The distinction is used in various meanings and within multiple discursive repertoires. What is named as public or private also varies in time and in space. Although variable and contextual, the coding always carries social value; it structures the societal positions of people. Furthermore, the coding also carries meanings that are not translatable. “Th…

Dimensional analysis of pore scale and field scale immiscible displacement

1996

A basic re-examination of the traditional dimensional analysis of microscopic and macroscopic multiphase flow equations in porous media is presented. We introduce a ‘macroscopic capillary number’\(\overline {Ca}\) which differs from the usual microscopic capillary number Ca in that it depends on length scale, type of porous medium and saturation history. The macroscopic capillary number\(\overline {Ca}\) is defined as the ratio between the macroscopic viscous pressure drop and the macroscopic capillary pressure.\(\overline {Ca}\) can be related to the microscopic capillary number Ca and the LeverettJ-function. Previous dimensional analyses contain a tacit assumption which amounts to setting…

1996

This article deals with various means, which could be used by designers in order to estimate error terms in questionnaire tests results, thanks to psychometry. The study must be conceived so as to minimize systematic errors (validity) and random errors (reliability). Methods settled to test the validity of a study are very subjective, even if some of them seem to be more "scientific", being based on the principle of correlation. However the last-mentined don't stand up to some theoretic weakness and other explicit subjective methods should be chosen instead : for instance experts consensus. Methods of reliability evaluation have been developed under strong hypothesis to estimate a reliabilit…

Development of imaging techniques in gamma-ray astronomy using coded mask systems : application to the telescope LEGRI = Desarrollo de técnicas de ob…

1996

Fatigue life estimation for 30CrNiMo8 steel under in- and out-of-phase combined bending and torsion with variable amplitudes

1996

Fatigue life successively calculated according to three criteria of multiaxial fatigue for randomly varying loading is compared with fatigue life obtained by Sanetra and Zenner in testing cylindrical specimens of 30CrNiMo8 steel by in- and out-of-phase bending and torsion with variable amplitudes. The position of the plane of fatigue fracture is determined using the variance method. The histories of equivalent stresses are schematically represented by the Monte Carlo method. Fatigue damage was computed using the Palmgren-Miner hypothesis. The most realistic estimates of fatigue life in the scatter band of the results with a factor of 3 are obtained on the basis of the criterion of maximum t…

Introducción a Textos y contextos de Habermas

1996

Phase Transitions in Dense Lipid Monolayers Grafted to a Surface:  Monte Carlo Investigation of a Coarse-Grained Off-Lattice Model

1996

Semiflexible amphiphilic molecules end-grafted at a flat surface are modeled by a bead-spring chain with stiff bond angle potentials. Constant density Monte Carlo simulations are performed varying temperature, density, and chain length of the molecules, whose effective monomers interact with Lennard-Jones potentials. For not too large densities and low temperatures the monolayer is in a quasi-two-dimensional crystalline state, characterized by uniform tilt of the (stretched) chains. Raising the temperature causes a second-order transition into a (still solid) phase with no tilt. For the first time, finite size scaling concepts are applied to a model of a surfactant monolayer, and it is foun…

Photoionization of Oriented Systems and Circular Dichroism

1996

Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is a modification of normal absorption spectroscopy using circularly polarized light instead of unpolarized light for determining the difference in the absorption coefficients for right and left circularly polarized light, respectively, in optically active samples. Thus, there is nothing mysterious about CD spectroscopy. However, relative to most other spectroscopic techniques there seems to be a large psychological barrier in its application and at least physicists often regard CD, and optical activity in general, as a rather obscure technique without any useful application. There are some understandable reasons for this attitude, manifesting themselves…

Synthesis strategies and properties of smart amphiphilic networks

1996

This paper briefly surveys recent developments in the field of amphiphilic networks (APN) which are a new class of crosslinked polymer systems consisting of covalently bonded hydrophobic and hydrophilic chain segments. The covalent bonds between immiscible hydrophobic and hydrophilic polymer chains prevent demixing and yield polymer networks with unique structure and properties. Telechelic macromonomers provide the basis for the first generation of APNs obtained by copolymerization of the macromonomer with selected low molecular weight monomers. Synthesis of a variety of APNs using methacrylate-telechelic polyisobutylene (PIB) macromonomers prepared by living carbocationic polymerization (L…

Rheology of a Lower Critical Solution Temperature Binary Polymer Blend in the Homogeneous, Phase-Separated, and Transitional Regimes

1996

Small amplitude oscillatory shear rheology is employed in order to investigate the linear viscoelastic behavior of the lower critical solution temperature blend polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether), PS/PVME, as a function of temperature and composition. At low temperatures, where the mixture is homogeneous, the dependence of the zero shear viscosity (η0) on concentration is measured and is well-described by means of a new mixing rule, based on surface fractions instead of volume fractions. Shift factors from time-temperature superposition (TTS) exhibit a Williams−Landel−Ferry (WLF) behavior. As the macrophase separation temperature is approached (the phase diagram being established by turbi…

Osteogenic response deviates significantly in patients with traumatic brain injury. In this study, we analyze if there is an increased volume or earlier callus formation in long bones fractures in Wistar rats with and without brain injury. The results show …

Deciding reachability for planar multi-polynomial systems

1996

In this paper we investigate the decidability of the reachability problem for planar non-linear hybrid systems. A planar hybrid system has the property that its state space corresponds to the standard Euclidean plane, which is partitioned into a finite number of (polyhedral) regions. To each of these regions is assigned some vector field which governs the dynamical behaviour of the system within this region. We prove the decidability of point to point and region to region reachability problems for planar hybrid systems for the case when trajectories within the regions can be described by polynomials of arbitrary degree.
