Pathogenesis of Sepsis Syndrome: Possible Relevance of Pore-Forming Bacterial Toxins

This review focuses on a group of bacterial products whose very existence is known to only a minority of clinicians, and whose potential significance as inducers of the sepsis syndrome has eluded the attention of most microbiologists. This is unfortunate because pore-forming bacterial toxins possess all the properties for contributing to the pathogenesis of local and systemic inflammatory reactions. Because pore formers generally are highly immunogenic proteins, the prospects for immune intervention are described that may eventually be of benefit to patients. The subject is therefore of interest not only from a theoretical but also from a practical point of view.

Polyelectrolytes Grafted to Curved Surfaces

We present a scaling theory to describe equilibrium conformations of weakly charged polyelectrolyte molecules grafted at one end onto impermeable surfaces of various morphologies (spheres, cylinders) and of arbitrary curvature. We focus on the case of sufficiently densely grafted chains, i.e., on curved polyelectrolyte brushes. Different regimes of the behavior of curved polyelectrolyte brushes can be distinguished, depending on grafting density, surface curvature, and chain length. We present phase diagrams of the system describing these regimes and discuss the crossover conditions. We also analyze the effect of charge annealing in curved polyelectrolyte brushes.

Study of radiative leptonic events with hard photons and search for excited charged leptons at S**(1/2) = 130-GeV - 136-GeV

During the last 1995 data acquisition period at LEP, the DELPHI experiment collected an integrated luminosity of 5.9 pb−1 at centre-of-mass energies of 130 GeV and 136 GeV. Radiative leptonic events (e,μ,τ) with high energy photons were studied and compared to Standard Model predictions. The data were used to search for charged excited leptons decaying through an electromagnetic transition. No significant signal was found. From the search for pair produced excited leptons, the limits me∗>62.5 GeV/c2, mμ∗>62.6 GeV/c2 and mτ∗>62.2 GeV/c2 at 95\% confidence level were established. These two substances might play a pheromonal role during courtship behaviour. We investigated the genetic basis of the quantitative polymorphism observed in the production of 7-T and 7-P. La Universidad de fines del siglo XVIII e inicios del siglo XIX había introducido ya los manuales en su enseñanza. A través de ellos podemos inferir lo que se explicaba en las clases y los niveles de conocimiento que se intentaban transmitir a los alumnos. Dos manuales valencianos nos proporcionan una idea de aquellas lecciones en materia de censos, instituciones jurídicas que estaban en progresivo desuso, como restos últimos del Antiguo Régimen. Con este trabajo se pretende hacer una valoración de cómo tratan esta materia tan compleja de los censos dos manuales: uno ilustrado y el otro liberal. Se esboza la sistemática y las enseñanzas que transmiten.

Treatment results of standard chemotherapy in advanced gastrointestinal tract cancer are disappointing. 5-Fluorouracil (FU) is the therapeutic mainstay since its discovery more than 35 years ago. Response rates of single agent FU treatment range between 5 and 20% dependent on dose and schedule. Two years after the first mutation on exon 7 in the carboxy-terminal part of the hinge domain (D) was reported (Behr and Loos 1992), we have identified the second mutation on exon 7 in patients with GRTH. Prevalence of stroke: A door-to-door survey in three Sicilian municipalities

As part of a door-to-door survey, we screened for stroke among the inhabitants of three Sicilian municipalities (n = 24,496 as of November 1, 1987). Neurologists then investigated those subjects suspected to have had a stroke. Diagnoses of first-ever strokes were based on specified criteria and were reviewed by an adjudication panel. We found 189 subjects who had experienced at least one completed stroke (180 definite, 9 possible); 15 strokes were hemorrhagic, 71 ischemic, and 103 uncertain. The prevalence (cases/100,000) was 771.6 in the total population and 1,893.6 in those aged 40 years or over. In this paper concepts and techniques from system theory are used to obtain state-space (Markovian ) models of dynamic economic processes instead of the usual VARMA models. In this respect the concept of state is reviewed as are Hankel norm approximations,and balanced realizations for stochastic models. We clarify some aspects of the balancing method for state space modelling of observed time series. This method may fail to satisfy the so-called positive real condition for stochastic processes. We us a state variance factorization algorithm which does not require us to solve the algebraic Riccati equation. We relate the Aoki-Havenner method to the Arun - Kung method.

In this paper, we consider a dynamic error-components models with autocorrelated disturbances. We analyse the efficient estimation procedure of autocorrelation parameter and we try to find out whether moment conditions of a dynamic model without autocorrelation are valid when the model includes autocorrelation. We propose two efficient estimation methods of autocorrelation parameter in addition to Baltagi and Li (1994) estimator. We show that all moment conditions of a dynamic model without autocorrelation are not valid in dynamics errors-components models with autocorrelated disturbances.

Fue tratado mediante reducción cerrada bajo anestesia local y posterior inmovilización en un yeso braquioantcbraquial con el codo en 90° de flexión y el antebrazo en supinación durante 6 semanas.
