DETECTION OF ENTERIC ADENOVIRUS 40 AND 41 IN STOOL SPECIMENS BY MONOCLONAL-BASED ENZYME IMMUNOASSAYS

1996

o examine the role of enteric adenoviruses (Ad40 and Ad41) in children with acute gastroenteritis, we evaluated 273 children with diarrhoea and 137 without enteric symptoms in Palermo, Italy, during an 8-month period. Stools were tested by two home-made monoclonal-based ELISAs to detected genus-specific adenovirus antigen and to type Ad40 and Ad41. Twenty-five samples (6.1%) were found to contain adenovirus, 18 of which were grown in Graham 293 and in HEp-2 cells. Ad40 and Ad41 were detected in 2.6% of children with diarrhoea and in none in the control group, while non-enteric adenoviruses were obtained from both patients (3.2%) and controls (6.5%). Samples containing Ad40 and Ad41 were pos…

Beeinflußt der Chirurg das Lokalrezidivrisiko beim Rektumkarzinom?

1996

Comparative immunologic models can enhance analyses of environmental immunotoxicity

1996

Abstract To treat immune systems and how environments affect them is a unique challenge especially when the environment is considered in its broadest perspective: internal and external. Internal focuses on relationships between immune, nervous and endocrine systems (neuroendocrine) and how they interact to maintain homeostasis. External considers physical and chemical influences that act to change the internal. Using animal models is based upon phylogeny which focuses on invertebrates, fish, amphibians, and reptiles, including mammalian results and relationships to humans. Emphasizing primitive animals is due to a growing interest in using them as models, sentinels, surrogates—predictors of…

Microscopic aspects of solute-solute interactions induced by the solvent

1996

Low-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy for painful heel: a prospective controlled single-blind study.

1996

The aim of this prospective single-blind pilot study was to explore the pain-alleviating effect of low-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in painful heel associated with inferior calcaneal spurs. Thirty patients who suffered from persistent symptoms for more than 12 months qualified for low-energy ESWT and were assigned at random to two groups, real or simulated ESWT. Before beginning the treatment, any other therapy was stopped for a period of 6 weeks. The shock waves were applied by an experimental device allowing exact localization through an integrated fluoroscopy unit. Patients were treated three times at weekly intervals. Each time 1000 impulses of 0.06 mJ/mm2 were given …

Meropenem Permeation through the Outer Membrane of <i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</i> Can Involve Pathways Other than the OprD Porin Channel

1996

The outer membrane protein (OMP) OprD is the major channel through which carbapenems permeate the outer membrane of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In this study, we analyzed the OMP profiles of several P. aeruginosa clinical isolates showing diminished susceptibility to imipenem while remaining susceptible to meropenem. All these isolates lacked OprD or showed a reduced expression of this porin. Susceptibility to meropenem was thus independent of the level of OprD expression, indicating that the antimicrobial could be taken up via an alternative route. The level of expression of OprC (70 kD) was also unrelated to meropenem susceptibility. Nevertheless, OMPs OprF and OprE were expressed by all isol…

Suitability of a content-based retrieval method in astronomical image databases

1996

Abstract Indexing and retrieval methods based on the image content are required to effectively use information from large repositories of digital images. Usually, the way to search for data and images in astronomical archives is via textual queries expressed in terms of constraints on observation parameters. In this paper we present a method for automatic extraction of images by using shape descriptions based on local symmetry. The proposed indexing methodology has been developed and tested inside JACOB, a prototypal system for content-based video database querying.

Kinetic analysis of "living" polymerization processes exhibiting slow equilibria. 6. Cationic polymerization involving covalent species, ion pairs, a…

1996

The kinetics of cationic polymerization is studied theoretically in accordance with a three-state mechanism which consists of two successive equilibria:  the ionization/ion collapse equilibrium between covalent species and ion pairs, and the subsequent dissociation/association equilibrium between ion pairs and free ions. The number- and weight-average degrees of polymerization and the polydispersity index (PDI), Pw/Pn, are derived. The molecular weight distribution of the polymer generated from this mechanism is generally broader than that of polymers formed via a two-state mechanism, i.e. with only one equilibrium either between covalent species and ion pairs or between covalent species an…

JACOB: Just A COntent Based query system for video databases

1996

The increasing development of advanced multimedia applications requires new technologies for organizing and retrieving by content databases of still digital images or digital video sequences. The authors describe JACOB, a prototypal system allowing content-based browsing and querying in video databases. The JACOB system automatically splits a video into a sequence of shots, extracts a few representative frames (said r-frames) from each shot and computes r-frame descriptors based on features like color and texture. No user action is required during the database population step. Queries exploit this image content description and may be direct or by example

El fenómeno Chabás

1996

Oxyfunctionalization of Aliphatic Esters by Methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane

1996

The oxidation of lineal, cyclic, and bicyclic aliphatic p-chlorobenzoic and p-chorobenzenesulfonic acid esters 2 with methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane (TFDO) (1) occurs at positions in the hydrocarbon chain distant from the directing group with a significant degree of selectivity to give the corresponding keto or hydroxy esters. Compounds 2 are relatively deactivated with respect to this oxidation due to the electron-withdrawing nature of the ester moiety. Methylene Cα−H and Cβ−H bonds remain unchanged in all cases, but tertiary Cβ−H bonds undergo oxidation with TFDO (1). Stereoelectronic factors are used to explain the faster reaction rate in competition experiments for the oxidation of en…

El sobreentendido

1996

In vitro modeling of the ternary interaction in juvenile hormone metabolism

1996

The gradual decline in juvenile hormone (JH) titer followed by its complete clearance early in the last larval instar is required for the onset of the metamorphosis of lepidopterous larvae. JH titer is regulated by both biosynthesis and degradation. Two major pathways for JH metabolism, ester hydrolysis and epoxide hydration, are due to JH esterase (JHE) and JH epoxide hydrolase (JHEH), respectively. In vitro experiments designed to elucidate the molecular mechanism of JH metabolism are described. First, microsomal JHEH in Manduca sexta eggs was identified by using photoaffinity analogs of JH, and purified to homogeneity with ion exchange and hydroxylapatite columns. Purified JHEH from M. s…

Analysis of 24-h noninvasive ambulatory blood pressure profiles by a third-degree polynomial approach

1996

Extensive experience of the circadian variation of blood pressure (BP) has been reported. But some problems exist concerning the correct and satisfactory evaluation of 24-h BP profiles. A well-known approach is the Halberg's 'cosinor' method. But it could be considered inadequate for blood pressure recordings because it is based on a rigid model that does not practically fit empirical data. We suggest an approach based on a cubic function as a suitable method for such an analysis. Our investigation studied the behavior of 24-h blood pressure by a model where the function f(t) is a third-degree polynomial. We recruited 52 untreated patients affected by essential hypertension. Ambulatory BP r…

1996

Abstract The ligand 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bipym) was reacted with diorganotins R 2 SnCl 2 (R = methyl, ethyl) and complexes of the types R 2 SnCl 2 bipym, R 2 SnCl 2 bipym · bipym and (R 2 SnCl 2 ) 2 bipym were synthesized and studied by 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy in solution, and by IR and Mossbauer spectroscopy in the solid state and frozen solutions. The complexes Et 2 SnCl 2 bipym · bipym and (Et 2 SnCl 2 ) 2 bipym were characterized by X-ray diffraction methods. In both complexes the tin environment is octahedral with chloro atoms in a cis disposition, the ethyl groups in a trans disposition and two N atoms from the ligand bipym. the second complex is a centrosymmetric binuclear specie…

Coherent aspects of the local dipolar field in echo dynamics: A spectral narrowing effect.

1996

We have measured the spectral content of the echo radiation emitted by a two-level spin system ([${\mathrm{AlO}}_{4}$${]}^{0}$ centers in quartz), after a two-pulse excitation sequence, ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\theta}}}_{1}$-\ensuremath{\tau}-${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\theta}}}_{2}$. In general, the experimental spectral shapes reproduce qualitatively those calculated for an inhomogeneous system of noninteracting spins. However, we found that in certain ranges of the sequence parameters (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\theta}}}_{1}$, ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\theta}}}_{2}$, and \ensuremath{\tau}) the widths of the experimental spectra are less than expected by a factor that amounts up to 0.5. The observed na…

Nonlinear inverse bremsstrahlung and highly anisotropic electron distributions

1996

A procedure is proposed to deal with the approximate solution of the kinetic equation for the velocity distribution function of electrons in a fully ionized plasma in the presence of strong, high frequency radiation. The Legendre polynomial expansion is applied after the kinetic equation has been written in an oscillating frame, where some directions are appropriately scaled, with the aim of making approximately isotropic, on the average, distributions that are otherwise anisotropic. The equations are derived for the isotropic part of the electron distribution in the scaled frame and for the scaling factor. The procedure is meant to display its potential in cases where the electron distribu…
