Preparation and physico-chemical study of inclusion complexes between idebenone and modified beta-cyclodextrins

The inclusion properties of modifiedβ-cyclodextrins (trimethyl-β-cyclodextrin, dimethyl-β-cyclodextrin and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin) towards idebenone were compared with naturalβ-cyclodextrin. The inclusion complexes were prepared by different methods (coprecipitation, kneading, and freeze-drying) and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry, UV, CD and NMR spectroscopy. The results obtained by CD and NMR spectroscopy indicate a different orientation of idebenone in dimethyl-β-cyclodextrin with respect to other cyclodextrins. Prevalence of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy: A door-to-door survey in a Sicilian municipality

Introduction - Because of the limited information on cervical spondylotic radiculopathy, we conducted a door-to-door two-phase survey in a Sicilian municipality. Material and methods - We first screened for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy among the inhabitants of the municipality : (N= 7653, as of the prevalence day, November 1, 1987). Study neurologists then investigated those subjects suspected to have had a cervical spondylotic radiculopathy. Diagnoses were based on specified criteria. The Problem of Volcanic Unrest: The Campi Flegrei Case History

Campi Flegrei is one of the most densely populated active volcanic areas of the world. It consists of a complex structure with a multicollapse caldera and many postcaldera, explosive, mostly monogenetic vents. The last eruption was in 1538 (Mt. Nuovo). Progressive reduction of eruption energy has accompanied migration of the vents toward the center of the caldera. Campi Flegrei activity is fed by a shallow magma chamber in which trachybasaltic magma undergoes cooling and fractionation, producing trachytic residual melt that is periodically tapped and erupted to the surface. On the Adsorption Process in Polymer Brushes:  A Monte Carlo Study

The adsorption process of the single polymer chain in a polymer brush of varying surface coverages is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations of the bond-fluctuation lattice model. Only the end monomers can adsorb at the grafting surface, whereas inner monomers interact repulsively with it. The brush builds up a steric hindrance which forces the penetrating polymer to stretch strongly and which is responsible for small adsorption probabilities at surface coverages close to the overlap density. The final step of the adsorption process is determined by a fluctuation of the end monomer around its average position, which is comparable to the initial step of the desorption process.

Energy dependence of the differences between the quark and gluon jet fragmentation

Three jet events arising from decays of the Z beson, collected by the DELPHI detector, were used to measure differences in quark and gluon fragmentation. Gluon jets were anti-tagged by identifying b quark jets. Unbiased quark jets came from events with two jets plus one photon. Quark and gluon jet properties in different energy ranges were compared for the first time within the same detector. Quark and gluon jets of nearly the same energy in symmetric three jet event topologies were also compared. The system is based on two separate archives: a 'features DB' and a 'raw-data DB'. When a user puts a query, a search is done in the 'features DB'; the selected items are taken form the 'raw-data DB' and shown to the user. Altough complementary foods may eliminate tryptophan deficiency, serotonin deficiency may often continue to exist because of competition made by other Large Neutral Amino Acids (LNAA) against tryptophan for neuron access, since they use the same carrier to cross the blood-brain barrier. Endothelin-1 is known to possess various biological properties. In the present study we have investigated the effects of Endothelin-1 (Et-1) on the expression of adhesion molecules ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and CD-44 by fibroblast-like synoviocytes. Cultured fibroblast-like synoviocytes were treated with Et-1 in the absence or presence of C1306, a specific endothelin-A-receptor antagonist. Cell surface expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and CD-44 was determined by immunofluorescence studies, Cyto-ELISA and FACS-analysis. ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and CD-44 were constitutively expressed on cultured FLS. Epithelioid Leiomyoma of the Prostate

We report a case of an unusual mesenchymal tumor of the prostate. Rectal-digital palpation and transrectal ultrasound showed a circumscribed and inhomogeneous tumor within the right prostatic lobe. Surgical treatment consisted of transurethral resection of the right prostatic lobe. On the basis of morphology and immunohistochemical detection of desmin and smooth-muscle-type actin, the diagnosis of an epithelioid leiomyoma was made. This is the first report of this entity in the prostate. A definite prediction of the biological potential is currently not yet possible.

Since the high rate of cardiovascular disease in renal transplant recipients, alterations of lipoprotein profile in such patients were extensively evaluated, but the HDL subclass profile was not completely clarified. Se calcula y estudia la distribución de la concentración diaria de la precipitación en el territorio de la Comunidad Valenciana según el índice de concentración de lluvia propuesto por Martín Vide (1984) empleando las bases de datos diarias del Atlas Climàtic de la Comunitat Valenciana (Pérez Cueva, 1994). El análisis de los resultados sugiere la división del territorio en tres conjuntos latitudinales sobre los que se superpone una gradación costa-interior en tres bandas comprendidas en distancias a la costa de 0-15 km, 15-55 km y > 55 km.

Damos a conocer aquí el hallazgo de dos fragmentos de epígrafes latinos en la población de Viver (Alto Palancia), que han sido localizados recientemente por uno de nosotros (V. P. ). Uno de ellos (núm. 1) corresponde a una inscripción ya conocida aunque extraviada, mientras que el otro (núm. 2) corresponde a una nueva inscripción. Con este nuevo hallazgo, el conjunto epigráfico de esta localidad asciende a 14 y el de la comarca a 64 inscripciones.
