Effectiveness of low-energy extracorporal shock waves for chronic plantar fasciitis

1996

Summary Over a period of 4 years we performed a prospective randomized trial on 100 patients in order to compare the effects of low-energy extracorporal shock-wave therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of painful heel (chronic plantar fasciitis). Patients in group I were treated three times at weekly intervals with 1000 impulses of 0.08 mJ/mm 2 given around the heel spur. Group II received treatment three times with 10 impulses of the same energy density at weekly intervals. Follow-up examinations were done at 12 and 52 weeks, respectively. The main outcomes assessed were reduction in severity of pressure pain, period of pain-free walking, and patient satisfaction. At 12 weeks, 16 of 50 patients …

Membrane Protein Subunit Fractionation by Means of Inverse Pore Gradient Elution Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis

1996

We report here the preparative scale isolation of the four subunits of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) applying short inverse pore gradient SDS gels on an elution-PAGE apparatus. The nAChR subunits are of similar molecular weights (alpha, 50.2 kDa; beta, 53.7 kDa; gamma, 56.3 kDa; delta, 57.6 kDa) and isoelectric point (approx 5.5) and share the typical properties of amphiphatic membrane proteins that are difficult to separate by chromatographic procedures. Preparative PAGE, which has proved to be the method of choice for nAChR-subunit fractionation, however, is time-consuming and achieves only moderate resolutions yielding dilute fractions. We present here the fractionation of…

Minimal forbidden words and symbolic dynamics

1996

We introduce a new complexity measure of a factorial formal language L: the growth rate of the set of minimal forbidden words. We prove some combinatorial properties of minimal forbidden words. As main result we prove that the growth rate of the set of minimal forbidden words for L is a topological invariant of the dynamical system defined by L.

Polimeryzacja etylenu wobec katalizatorów wanadowo-magnezowych aktywowanych związkami glinoorganicznymi

1996

Complexes (I)—(V) of vanadium(III) chloride with Lewis bases like tetrahydrofuran, ethyl acetate and ethyl malonate, were used as precursors of vanadium-magnesium catalysts for polymerization of ethylene. When treated with organoaluminium compounds the pure complexes showed no catalytic activity. After having been ball-milled with [MgCl2(THF)2] used as carrier, the complexes catalyzed the polymerization at rates up to 260 kg PE (gVh'1). A chlorinated hydrocarbon added to the polymerization medium raised the catalyst activity. The resulting PE had a high molecular weight and a very narrow molecular weight distribution, indicative of highly homogeneous active centers. The density of PE was ra…

Introducción a Finales de Partida: La modernidad irreconciliable.

1996

An Attempt to Forecast the Labour Market for Scientists in France

1996

The resultats presented here are based on a study conducted at the request of the French Ministry of Research. The first part presents the context of the labour market for scientists in France and the second and the third parts show the results of a supply/demand model. The model forecasts the absence of a shortage of scientists, which was not the common opinion at that time. A final part discusses the main conclusions and the implications of the exercise.

A model for the γN → ππN reaction

1996

We have studied the γN → ππN reaction using a model wich includes N, Δ(1232), N*(1440) and N*(1520) intermediate baryonic states and the ρ-meson as a intermediate ππ resonance. The model reproduces fairly well experimental cross sections below Eγ=800 MeV and invariant-mass distributions even at higher energies. One of the interesting findings of study is what the γN → N*(1520) → Δπ process is very important and interferes strongly with the dominant Δ-Kroll-Ruderman term to produce the experimental peak of the kross section.

Electronic structure of poly(p-(disilanylene)phenylene)

1996

Abstract We present the geometrical and electronic structures of several isomers of poly(p-(disilanylene)phenylene), The structural analysis, performed at the 3-21G* level, shows that the isomers with the phenylene group perpendicular to the silicon backbone are the more stable conformations, displaying almost the same energy. The electronic properties, as obtained from the valence-effective Hamiltonian (VEH) band structure calculations, strongly depend on the disposition of the phenylene group into the polymeric backbone. The VEH predicts a wide and asymmetric absorption band in excellent agreement with UV experimental data.

Methods for optimal shape design of electrical devices

1996

Often the primary problem facing designers of structural systems is determining the shape of the structure. In spite of graphical work stations and modern software for analyzing the structure, finding the best geometry for the structure by “trial and error” is still a very tedious and timeconsuming task. The goal in optimal shape design (structural optimization, or redesign) is to computerize the design process and therefore shorten the time it takes to design new products or improve the existing design. Structural optimization is already used in many applications in industry. In general, however, structural optimization is just beginning to penetrate the industrial community. Integrating F…

Layout algorithms of graph-like diagrams for GRADE windows graphic editors

1996

We propose a set of layout operations ensuring flexible and convenient interactive editing of communication diagrams and nested entity-relationship models having textual labels on connections. The set includes several procedures for incremental diagram layout. Tools for fully automatic layout and for direct manual painting of graphic primitives are also integrated in a single system. In this way we have filled to some extent the gap between both extremal levels of editing.

Validation of frictional studies by double-cup extrusion tests in cold-forming

1996

Abstract Studies on frictional conditions in cold-forming have shown that, for a given lubricant, friction factor values are strongly affected by the test method. In the present paper, different cold-forging processes of an aluminium alloy, are modelled by a FEM numerical code using the m values obtained by both the double cup extrusion and ring compression tests. It appears that the m values given by the ring tests can be effectively used in the simulation of upsetting processes, while the m values derived by the double cup extrusion tests are more appropriate for predictions in extrusion and closed-die forging operations.

A case of a congenital cleft of the posterior arch of the atlas associated with a fracture of the spinous process of C-7 is reported. Appropiate clinical evaluation and CT-scan study allow to differentiate acute trauma from a congenital abnormality in the atlas.

New imaging procedures in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy

1996

Lymphocytic and other mononuclear cell infiltrations of the retrobulbar space are observed in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). The identification of somatostatin receptors on lymphocytes has provided a rationale for receptor-imaging with the radiolabeled somatostatin analog Octreotide in TAO. Furthermore, previous investigations have shown that quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows non-invasive detection of acute inflammatory changes in extraocular muscles. Therefore, in patients with TAO and controls, scans of the orbits were obtained at 4h and 24h after i.v. injection of the radionuclide and orbital MRI was performed. Compared to controls, patients with TAO showed a…

Optic fibre as a transducer of tendomuscular forces

1996

Direct in vivo tendon force measurements open up new possibilities for understanding of muscle-tendon loads during natural locomotion. The present report presents a new optic fibre method for such applications. The method is based on light intensity modulation by mechanical modification of the geometric properties of the optic fibre. A special optic fibre with a plastic covering buffer and with a total diameter of either 265 microns or 500 microns was carefully prepared at both ends for receiving and transmitting light. The fibre was inserted through the rabbit common calcaneal tendon with a 20 gauge needle. By removing the needle the optic fibre remained in situ. Static loading demonstrate…

The range of non-surjective convolution operators on Beurling spaces

1996

AbstractLet μ ≠ 0 be an ultradistribution of Beurling type with compact support in the space . We investigate the range of the convolution operator Tμ on the space of non-quasianalytic functions of Beurling type associated with a weight w, in the case the operator is not surjective. It is proved that the range of TM always contains the space of real-analytic functions, and that it contains a smaller space of Beurling type for a weight σ ≥ ω if and only if the convolution operator is surjective on the smaller class.

Mature Modifications and Dimorphism in Ammonoid Cephalopods

1996

The shell of an ammonoid is a kind of autobiography of the animal that once occupied it. Different parts of the shell tell different parts of the life history. The growth lines and the tiny intervals in between, along with the shape of the shell itself, record what was happening at the anterior end of the body. The septa and their sutures relate the tale of the other extremity.

Sample size in the monitoring of benthic macrofauna in the profundal of lakes: evaluation of the precision of estimates

1996

We discuss here the influence of sample size (number of replicates) on the accuracy and precision of the results when sampling profundal benthos with an Ekman grab according to the Finnish standard, SFS 5076, which is equivalent to the Swedish and Norwegian standards. The aim was to find criteria for choosing a sample size which would avoid any powerful influence of chance on the results without entailing an unreasonable amount of work for monitoring purposes.

Quasi-Stationary Distribution and Gibbs Measure of Expanding Systems

1996

Let T be an expanding transformation defined on A —(J A{, i= 1being a finite collection of connected open bounded subsets of 2Rn,such that T Acontains strictly Aand Tis Markovian. We prove the existence of a quasi-stationary distrition for T. We show that the T-invariant probability on the limit Cantor set is Gibbsian with potential Log|_DT|. Using the Hilbert projective metric we prove that both distributions are weak limits of conditional laws of probabilities, the speed of convergence being exponential. These results develop a previous work by G. Pianigiani and J.A. Yorke.
