Incidences des activités musicales en grande section de maternelle sur les apprentissages en cours préparatoire
1996
The impact of musical activities on learning achievements at the end of grade 1. When comparing two groups of pupils, one having benefited from a specific music program before entering grade 1 (2 or 4 hours per week at the least preprimary grade) and the other not, one finds out that this experimentation had a lasting positive impact on learning achievements. Indeed, an assessment of school performances in reading and mathematics at the end of grade 1 also shows that this impact proves even stronger one year later, especially when considering less bright children, non french or pupils with shorter preschooling experience. Hence, this experimentation has proved beneficial both on a pedagogic…
Aproximación a la población preestadística de Bétera
1996
Bayesian Hierarchical Models for Random Routes in Finite Populations
1996
In many practical situations involving sampling from finite populations, it is not possible (or it is prohibitely expensive) to access, or to even produce, a listing of all of the units in the population. In these situations, inferences can not be based on random samples from the population. Random routes are widely used procedures to collect data in absence of well defined sampling frames, and they usually have either been improperly analyzed as random samples, or entirely ignored as useless. We present here a Bayesian analysis of random routes that incorporates the information provided but carefully takes into account the non- randomness in the selection of the units.

Magnetic resonance chondro-crassometry (MR CCM): a method for accurate determination of articular cartilage thickness?
1996
A method for the assessment of articular cartilage thickness based on MRI is presented and its accuracy and reproducibility tested. Six specimens of human patellae were imaged, using a fat-suppressed FLASH 3D sequence, and sectioned with a high-precision band saw. The regional distribution of articular cartilage thickness was determined from the MR images and from the anatomical sections (intervals of 0.5 mm). With image analysis 50-90% of the image points were found to lie within exactly the same thickness interval in corresponding patterns, and less than 17% deviated more than 0.5 mm. More than 85% of all pixels were reproducible with MRI after new positioning of the joint. No influence o…
Spectral properties and aggregation of ferrooctacarboxyphthalocyanine(II) in aqueous solutions
1996
Spectral properties of ferrooctacarboxyphthalocyanine(II) in aqueous solutions are discussed. A special attention is paid to aggregation in the presence of electrolytes. The influence of many factors (concentration, pH etc.) on forms of its occurence is presented.
Diagramas: ¿Ilustraciones eficaces en la instrucción en ciencias?
1996
The widespread use of diagrams as science learning resources suggests they are considered to be effective aids to instruction. However, there appears to be a number of possible barriers to the realisation of their instructional potential. The role of scientific diagrams in learning is discussed with articular reference to problems that may be presented by them

The Influence of H. Grassmann on Italian Projective N-Dimensional Geometry
1996
On May 29, 1883, Corrado Segre took his doctorate in Turin (Torino), under Enrico D’Ovidio’s guidance. His thesis (Segre 1884a,b) was published one year later in the Journal of the local Academy of Science, and after a short time it became a fundamental starting point for the development of Italian projective n-dimensional geometry.

Herbicidally Active Derivatives of Aminomethylenebis-Phosphonic Acid-Mode of Action and Structure - Activity Relationship
1996
Abstract: (N-pyridylamino)methylenebisphosphonates exhibit strong herbicidal activity which may be reversed by supplementation of the growth media with aromatic amino acids. They appeare to be the inhibitors of aromatic amino acids biosynthesis acting as inhibitors of DAHP synthase the first enzyme of shikimate pathway. Over 40 analogues of these acids were synthesized in order to determine the structure-activity relationship.
Motion and Color Based Video Indexing and Retrieval
1996
In this paper we present a method for automatic motion and color based video indexing and retrieval. Our system automatically splits a video into a sequence of shots and extracts a few representative frames (r-frames) from each shot. For each r-frame we compute the optical flow field; motion features are then derived from the flow field. Color features are related to the three-dimensional RGB color histogram. Queries (direct or by example) are based on these features. Obtained results proved that motion and color based querying can play a central role in content based video retrieval

L'evolució de les e i o + iod en català dins la romània
1996
This work is a discussed exposition, with references to Romance languages nearer to Catalan, of two hypotesis which have tried to explain peculiar evolution e > [í] and o > [ú] because of the iod in Catalan. The most accepted explanation says the iod was the cause of diphthongation of both vowels (the same as in Occitan) and after this they monophthongized in [í] and [ú] respectivelly, But I try to notice you, by following the line that Badia Margarit in his Gramàtica suggested, also it could be accepted an explanation based on direct inflection of open vowels (the same as in Castilian and Portuguese).
Investigating the Role of the Microsomal Epoxide Hydrolase Membrane Topology and Its Implication for Drug Metabolism Pathways
1996
The microsomal epoxide hydrolase (mEH) catalyzes the hydrolysis of reactive epoxides which are formed by the action of cytochromes P450 from xenobiotics. In addition the mEH has been found to mediate the transport of bile acids. For the mEH it has been shown that it is cotranslationally inserted into the endoplasmic reticulum. Here we demonstrate that the amino-terminal twenty amino acid residues of this protein serve as its single membrane anchor signal sequence and that the function of this sequence can be also supplied by a cytochrome P450 (CYP2B1) anchor signal sequence.

Photoemission investigations of non-metal/metal transition in thin discontinuous antimony films
1996
The electric and photoelectric properties of very thin discontinuous antimony films deposited on an insulating (sapphire) substrate were investigated in order to explain the "surfactant" role of Sb atoms iu the growth of other metal films on this substrate. The results show that the properties of pure Sb films on a sapphire are similar to those observed for other metals and cannot explain an essential change in the growth of Ag, Au, Ga and other metals when the substrate is pre-germinated with antimony.

Improvement of the nitrogen uptake induced by Ti(IV) supply in nitrogen stressed pepper crops
1996
The beneficial effect of titanium on plant metabolism can result in a more profitable use of fertilizers on many crops. An experiment was performed in a greenhouse with Capsicum annuum L. cv. Bunejo plants cultivated under different levels of nitrogen fertilization: 100% N — 250 N fertilizer units/ha (NFU); 75% N - 187.5 NFU; 50% N - 125 NFU; 25% N - 62.5 NFU. A third of the plants in each N support remained Ti-untreated and were used as a reference. Each of the other thirds received one and two 2 mg Ti/l, pH 6, leaf spray treatments respectively (35 ml/plant). Biomass production of the Ti-untreated references was only affected by N-supplies of 25%. Ti leaf spray treatments induced a biomas…

THE TOPOLOGY OF BASIN BOUNDARIES IN A CLASS OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS
1996
We will develop new methods to determine the topology of the basin boundary in a class of three-dimensional dynamical systems. One approach is to approximate the basin boundary by backward integration. Unfortunately, there are dynamical systems where it is hard to approximate the basin boundary by a numerical backward integration algorithm. We will introduce topological methods which will provide new information about the structure of the basin boundary. The topological invariants which we will use can be numerically computed.

An extended shakedown theory for elastic-plastic-damage material models
1996
Internal variable elastic-plastic-damage, or elastic-damage, material models endowed with free energy are considered. Referring to a structure of such a material subjected to loads varying inside a given domain, the classical notion of (elastic) shakedown is widened to signify that the structure eventually responds to the loads in an elastic manner after certain (finite) amounts of plastic strain and/or damage have been produced. For structures fulfilling an ad-hoc D-stability requisite, an extended shakedown theorem is presented as a generalization of the classical Melan theorem to nonlinear elasticity and damage - besides nonlinear hardening. For common materials exhibiting linear elastic…

Comparaison de deux méthodes de correction atmosphérique des données thermiques de Landsat TM
1996
The high resolution of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) thermal infrared data can be interesting in applications such as energy balance and crop water stress studies. However, surface temperature measurements are strongly affected by atmospheric effects, particularly by water vapour absorption, therefore a correction method is absolutely necessary. The impossibility of applying a split-window equation and the difficulty of having temporarily coincident radiosondes produce a slight use of Landsat TM data to obtain surface temperature. Vidal et al. show that in a zone with homogeneous climatic conditions, atmospheric correction can be evaluated by using energy balance equation and standard meteor…
