Interplay of Chiral Side Chains and Helical Main Chains in Polyisocyanates

Here we describe the synthesis of seven new copolymer series prepared by copolymerization of hexyl isocyanate with seven new chiral azo chromophores with an isocyano functionality. The resulting copolyisocyanates (Nylon 1) possess a helical polymer conformation. In the cases in which the chiral group and polymer chain are linked to the same phenyl ring (copolymer series VI-IX) a transfer of chirality to the polymer chain is possible. I.e. one helical twist sense is preferred in this case. By variation of the chiral center, polymers with preferable right- or left-handed helical conformation are accessible. Prospects for the extraction of vertical bar Vcb vertical bar from B-c->J/Psi mu(+)nu decays at LHC

We discuss the possibility of extracting ∣Vcb∣ from the future measurement at LHC of the Bc → J/ψ μ+ ν decay rate followed by the leptonic decay J/ψ → μ+μ−. We examine in detail the influence of the measurement of the muons' momenta and vertex reconstruction in the final uncertainty of ∣Vcb∣, as well as the required theoretical inputs at both the production and weak decay level, and their reliability in this regard. We stress the relevance of a rigorous description of the fragmentation contributions to inclusive production at large transverse momentum of heavy quarkonia in pp collisions.

Técnica de Imhäuser en el pie zambo : resultados a medio y largo plazo

Se revisan un total de 60 pies con equinovaro congénito pertenecientes a 48 pacientes, todos con un seguimiento superior a 5 años. En todos los casos se realizó un tratamiento combinado: ortopédico (manipulaciones y enyesados desde el nacimiento) y quirúrgico (correcciones según el método de Imhäuser modificado). Se valoró morfológica, funcional y radiográficamente cada caso. En la valoración global sólo 1 caso fue considerado malo, 13 regulares (21,6%), 6 por pies planos valgos, 3 por pronato de antepié y 4 por adducto de antepié, y 12 buenos (20%), aunque presentaban alguna alteración morfológica o funcional mínima, y 34 excelentes (56,6%). Here the notion of “small” sets we formalize in a very general way, i.e. we define a notion of measure for subsets of natural numbers, and we consider as being small those sets, which are subsets of sets with zero measure.

Isobaric Vapor−Liquid Equilibria of the Water + 2-Propanol System at 30, 60, and 100 kPa

Isobaric vapor−liquid equilibria were obtained for the water + 2-propanol system at 30, 60, and 100 kPa. The activity coefficients were found to be thermodynamically consistent by the methods of Van Ness−Byer−Gibbs, Kojima, and Wisniak. The data were correlated with five liquid phase activity coefficient models (Margules, Van Laar, Wilson, NRTL, and UNIQUAC).

A Modified Tabu Thresholding Approach for the Generalised Restricted Vertex Colouring Problem

We present a modification of the Tabu Thresholding (TT) approach and apply it to the solution of the generalised restricted vertex colouring problem. Both the bounded and unbounded cases are treated. In our algorithms, the basic TT elements are supplemented with an evaluation function that depends on the best solution obtained so far, together with a mechanism which reinforces the aggressive search in the improving phase, and new diversification strategies which depend on the state of the search. The procedure is illustrated through the solution of the problem of minimising the number of workers in a heterogeneous workforce.

Molecular markers and species delimitation: examples from the European batrachofauna

AbstractMolecular techniques have revolutionised zoological systematics since the beginning of the seventies. Within the last twenty years numerous new amphibian species have been described in Europe almost solely on the basis of molecular data. This paper focuses on the use of molecular character state and genetic distance data for the delimitation of species. Case studies of European anurans (Discoglossus, water frogs of the genus Rana) are discussed in the framework of concurring species concepts to illustrate problems of assigning species status to divergent populations on the basis of molecular data.

Abbau der Proteine und Stoffwechsel der Aminosäuren

Neben den Kohlenhydraten sind die Proteine die wichtigsten Nahrungsstoffe. Man hat ermittelt, das im erwachsenen Menschen taglich etwa 400 g korpereigenes Protein hydrolytisch gespalten und neu synthetisiert werden. Davon werden etwa 60 bis 80 g nach der Hydrolyse zu Aminosauren oxidativ abgebaut oder in Glucose umgewandelt. Zu etwa 50% kann dieser Anteil durch Eigensynthese aus anderen Metaboliten wieder gedeckt werden (nichtessentielle Aminosauren), etwa die Halfte der in Proteinen vorkommenden Aminosauren (essentielle Aminosauren) kann jedoch nicht im menschlichen Organismus resynthetisiert werden. Dieser Anteil mus in jedem Fall mit der Nahrung aufgenommen werden.

A Simple Model for Ac Impedance Spectra in Bipolar Membranes

A new model accounting for the ac impedance spectra of synthetic ion-exchange bipolar membranes is presented. The theoretical approach is based on the Nernst−Planck and Poisson equations and applies some of the concepts used in the semiconductor pn junctions to the case of a bipolar membrane. The results presented are the current−voltage curves and the impedance spectra at electric currents above the limiting current. In today manufacturing scenario the trend to produce with lower and lower tolerance and continuously decrease the defectives rate seems to be irreversible. Then the evaluation of system performances is essential to determine if the process is able to respect our tolerances. With the classical approach this evaluation is realised by considering the process in the in control state and evaluating the capability indices and, consequently, the defectives rate. This study demonstrates by an updated analysis of an ongoing prospective study that tumor oxygenation, as measured with a validated standardized polarographic needle electrode method before treatment, powerfully predicts the prognosis of patients receiving radiotherapy for intermediate and advanced stage cancer of the uterine cervix. Evaluation of IGF1 and IGFBP3 during diet therapy in patients affected by food allergy with complex nutritional risk

The seric levels of IGF1 and IGFBP3 and their molar ratio, together with clinical and auxological parameters, have been evaluated in 16 patients (8 males and 8 females), of average age of 11.6±8.66 months, who were suffering from complex food allergy and were subjected to a balanced diet whill excluded the "offending" food. The results, compared "with those of a control population of same age and body surface, have showln a significative reduction of IGF1 and an increase of the molar ratio IGFBP3/IGF1.
