Surfactant effect of Sb on the growth of Ag films on a sapphire substrate

1996

It is shown that a very thin layer of Sb may be used as a surfactant to modify the growth of silver films on an insulating substrate. The conduction (percolation) current flowing through a dispersed Ag film appears at a significantly smaller thickness due to the change in the growth mode of silver islands. Some practical applications are indicated.

A case of posterior dislocation of the shoulder with locked fracture of the humeral head after a convulsive seizure is reported. At first stages, this type is very difficult to recognize. In ou…

Intervento di ripristino della copertura arborea su un'area del parco dell'Etna interessata da colata lavica recente.

1996

The planning and results of a reafforestation carried out on a private area occurring in the Etna Wildlife Reserve C zone are presented. The area consists of a terraced slope 70.000 square meters wide, made out of a lava flow part which dates back to 1983. At first were planted and seeded Astragalus siculus Biv. and Festuca circummediterranea Patzke, in order to set a pioneer vegetation cover; then were planted some aboreal species having a leading role in the physiognomical characterisation of the Etna landscape, like Betula aetnenis Raf., Pinus laricio Poiret, Populus tremula L. The success of the intervention is shown by the fairly quick penetration of 26 species coming from the neighbou…

Stratospheric Aerosols After Pinatubo: Results from the 1991/2 Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition (AASE II)

1996

The Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition II involved measurements of key quantities concerning the chemistry and physics of the stratospheric ozone loss from the NASA operated DC-8 and ER-2 platforms. The series of AASE II flights was conducted between August 22, 1991, until March 26, 1992, from Moffett Field (California), Fairbanks (Alaska), and Bangor (Maine). The timing and location of the AASE II flights permitted to obtain a large data basis pertaining to the effects of the Mt. Pinatubo volcanic plume spreading in the northern hemispheric stratosphere. This contribution presents results obtained from the ER-2 in-situ measurements up to altitudes of ≈ 20 km in the polar stratosphere…

Physiological stress responses ofAnguilla anguillato fenitrothion

1996

The present communication deals with the effect of fenitrothion (0.04 ppm) on the carbohydrate metabolism of the european eel Anguilla anguilla and its recovery from intoxication. Analysis of various parameters such as glycogen, lactate and glucose was made on different eel tissues after 2, 8, 12, 24, 32, 48, 56, 72 and 96 hr of fenitrothion exposure. Subsequently, the fish were allowed recovery periods of 8, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 144 and 192 hr in clean water, and the same parameters were evaluated. Muscle glycogen content decreased significantly during the exposure time, while blood glucose levels increased markedly. Gill, muscle and blood lactate values increased during pesticide exposure.…

Isobaric Vapor−Liquid Equilibria of the Water + 1-Propanol System at 30, 60, and 100 kPa

1996

Isobaric vapor−liquid equilibria for the water + 1-propanol system are reported at 30, 60, and 100 kPa. The results were found to be thermodynamically consistent according to Van Ness−Byer−Gibbs, Kojima, and Wisniak methods. The system shows a minimum boiling azeotrope, and the azeotropic composition is scarcely shifted with pressure. Results were compared with literature values. The data were correlated with Margules, Van Laar, Wilson, NRTL, and UNIQUAC liquid-phase activity coefficient models.

Dynamics of Polymer Chains Confined in Slit-Like Pores

1996

Monte Carlo simulations of an off-lattice bead spring model of polymer chains are presented, confining the chains between two repulsive parallel planes a distance D apart. Varying the chain length N from N = 16 to N = 128, we show that under good solvent conditions the chains behave like two-dimensional self-avoiding walks, their mean square gyration radius scales as (R g 2 ) N 2v with v = 3/4. The density profile across the slit is independent of N and maximal in the center of the slit. The dynamical properties of the chains are found to be in full agreement with the Rouse model with excluded volume in d = 2 dimensions, the relaxation times vary like τ N Z with z = 2v +1 = 5/2, the diffusi…

Model building and molecular mechanics calculations of mitoxantrone-deoxytetranucleotide complexes: Molecular foundations of DNA intercalation as cyt…

1996

Several intercalation complexes of the antitumor-active drug mitoxantrone with base paired tetranucleotides were constructed by molecular modeling using computer graphics and molecular mechanics calculations. The mitoxantrone molecule favours DNA binding into CG intercalation site. The two side chains of the drug are orientated into the major groove and fixed by hydrogen bonds with the nucleotide bases. This molecular study can be helpful for understanding the mode of action of cytostatically active compounds and to design new structurally related compounds of the anthraquinone drug type.

Thermodynamics of yeast cell osmoregulation: Passive mechanisms

1996

International audience; The response of yeast cells to osmotic pressure variations of the medium were studied through the kinetics of cell-volume modifications corresponding to the mass transfer of water and solutes. Osmotic variations were made by modification of the concentration of an external binary solution (polyol/water) without nutritive components. Two phases were distinguished in the thermodynamic response. A transient phase following an osmotic shift, which is characterised by rapid water transfer across the cell membrane and whose kinetics determine cell viability; then, a steady-state phase is reached when the cell volume becomes quasi-constant. The response of the cell during t…

Stationary semiconductor equations

1996

The behaviour of a semiconductor device is usually modelled by three coupled nonlinear partial differential equations of elliptic type. Such a system for the transport of mobile charge carriers was first introduced by Van Roosbroeck [Van Roosbroeck] in 1950. Nowadays there are many models which differ in their choice of unknowns, scales, various types of nonlinearities etc. (see, e.g., [Brezzi], [Groger], [Markowich], [Markowich, Ringhofer, Schmeiser], [Mock, 1972], [Polak, den Heijer, Schilders, Markowich], [Pospisek], [Pospisek, Segeth, Silhan], [Selberherr], [Sze], [Zlamal, 1986]).

Shape design optimization in 2D aerodynamics using Genetic Algorithms on parallel computers

1996

Publisher Summary This chapter presents two Shape Optimization problems for two dimensional airfoil designs. The first one is a reconstruction problem for an airfoil when the velocity of the flow is known on the surface of airfoil. The second problem is to minimize the shock drag of an airfoil at transonic regime. The flow is modeled by the full potential equations. The discretization of the state equation is done using the finite element method and the resulting non-linear system of equations is solved by using a multi-grid method. The non-linear minimization process corresponding to the shape optimization problems are solved by a parallel implementation of a genetic algorithm (GA). Some n…

Interfuel substitutions in the Great Britain's industry in the 1987-1993 period : a translog approach

1996

According to the Department of Trade and Industry (1994), the British consumption of fuel for manufacturing industry, over the period 1973-1993, may be characterized by, firstly, a substitution of oil by gas, and secondly, an increase of energy efficiency. This study attempts to tackle both phenomena by using an econometric approach, based upon translog interfuel substitution models. To do so, the « classic » translog model ought to be enhanced in order to capture the prospect of (1) a non-homothetic feature of the manufacturing production process, (2) energy efficiency -via the implementation of an embodied technical change specification, and (3) short run and long run fuel consumption evo…

Epidemiology, prevention and screening for prostate cancer.

1996

Prostate cancer is a growing social problem. The economical impact is high and is likely to become greater in future years, not only because the number of patients diagnosed with prostatic neoplasias is increasing steadily, but also because of the promotion of screening programmes and the rise in the number of surgical procedures available. It can be concluded that, at the present stage, widespread implementation of screening cannot be recommended. The answer to the question of screening can only be provided by large randomised trials, comparing either screening versus no screening, or early versus delayed treatment in patients in whom early cancer is detected by screening.

Définir la ville

1996

The city can hardly be grasped by a simple definition. Most of the available definitions are statistical or descriptive and they fail to represent the complex, multidimensional and changing nature of the urban phenomenon. The definition proposed in this paper is related to economic theory of city formation and is based on the agglomeration process and the diversity of agents and activities.
