Connecting Research to Teaching: Guidelines for Teaching Plane Isometries in Secondary School

1995

Two key concepts strongly supported by the NCTM's Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989) are (1) that geometry should be taught from multiple perspectives and (2) that it is necessary to make mathematical connections. Both concepts can be implemented by appropriately selecting topics that can be presented to students from several points of view in different environments and that can also link different branches of mathematics or mathematics and other sciences.

Injective spaces of real-valued functions with the baire property

1995

Generalizing the technique used by S.A. Argyros in [3], we give a lemma from which certain Banach spaces are shown to be non-injective. This is applied mainly to study the injectivity of spaces of real-valued Borel functions and functions with the Baire property on a topological space. The results obtained in this way do not follow from previous works about this matter.

Total lipids content and fatty acid composition of seed oils from six pomegranate cultivars

1995

The fatty acid composition of the seed oils of six pomegranate (Punica granatum L) cultivars was qualitatively and quantitatively determined by gas chromatography. The seeds contained oil in the range 51-152 mg kg -1 dry matter. Intervarietal differences in fatty acid composition were demonstrated (fatty acid esters as % (w/w) total fatty acid esters. Sour varieties had the highest while sour-sweet varieties had the lowest oil content. Eleven fatty acids were identified. In all varieties, the predominant fatty acids were linoleic (25.2-38.6%) and oleic acid (24.8-35.5%) followed by palmitic (18.2-22.6%), stearic (6.9-10.4%) and linolenic acid (0.6-9.9%). Contingent claim valuation in a market with different interest rates

1995

The problem of contingent claim valuation in a market with a higher interest rate for borrowing than for lending is discussed. We give results which cover especially the European call and put options. The method used is based on transforming the problem to suitable auxiliary markets with only one interest rate for borrowing and lending and is adapted from a paper of Cvitanic and Karatzas (1992) where the authors study constrained portfolio problems.

Hyaluronic Acid in the Treatment of Pain Due to Knee Joint Immobilisation

1995

This open, randomised study was carried out in order to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a course of 5 intra-articular injections (one per week) of hyaluronic acid (HA), administered to patients with pain and joint stiffness resulting from immobilisation of the knee in a plaster cast. The study was made in comparison with an untreated control group. 30 patients of both genders, aged between 18 and 65 years, immobilised in a plaster cast for at least 20 days and presenting with pain and reduced mobility, were included in the study. The results of the study show that, in comparison with the control group, treatment with HA produced a more rapid and effective reduction in pain and increase …

Democratic governments, economic growth and income distribution

1995

That in democracies more inequality leads to more redistribution is an implication of Allan Meltzer and Scott Richard's well-known model ( 1981).1 That, in turn, more redistribution leads to less growth is a generally accepted proposition. That "inequality is harmful for growth" (Persson and Tabellini, 1994) is thus the predictable result of the introduction of policy-making à la Meltzer and Richard into the theory of growth. The small literature in which such introduction has been attempted includes contributions by Alberto Alesina, Giuseppe Bertola, Roberto Perotti, Thomsten Persson, Dani Rodrik, Gilles Saint- Paul, Guido Tabellini and Thierry Verdier. Short surveys are provided by Perott…

An interpretation of EPR spectra of azide ligated superoxide dismutase from Propionibacterium shermanii

1995

A self-consistent description of the EPR spectra of the azide ligated SOD is obtained by taking into account the general configuration of the crystal field splitting in the crystal field Hamiltonian. The spread in the rhombicity parameter due to the presence of different conformational substates is introduced.

Nonlinear Schrödinger models and modulational instability in real electrical lattices

1995

International audience; In nonlinear dispersive media, the propagation of modulated waves, such as envelope (bright) solitons or hole (dark) solitons, has been the subject of considerable interest for many years, as for example in nonlinear optics [A.C. Newell and J.V. Moloney, Nonlinear Optics (Addison-Presley, 1991)]. On the other hand, discrete electrical transmission lines are very convenient tools to study the wave propagation in 1D nonlinear dispersive media [A.C. Scott (Wiley-Interscience, 1970)]. In the present paper, we study the generation of nonlinear modulated waves in real electrical lattices. In the continuum limit, our theoretical analysis based on the Nonlinear Schrodinger e…

About 340 g of a cycloaliphatic ionene (see formula given in the introduction) were fractionated by a continuous countercurrent extraction method (CPF). The efficiency of the separation was checked by viscometry and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Ten different fractions with number average molecular masses between 16 000 and 29 000 D were obtained and their glass transition temperatures T g determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for their bromide and tetrafluoroborate salts. No molecular weight dependence of T g was found, in contrast to recently reported results with aliphatic ionenes, where - in case of the bromide - T g increases with rising molecular weight.

A measurement of |Vcb| from

1995

Abstract From approximately 3 million hadronic decays of Z bosons recorded with the aleph detector at lep , a sample of 410 ± 32 B 0 → D ∗+ l − ν l candidates is selected, where l is either an electron or a muon. The differential decay rate dΓ ( B 0 → D ∗+ l − ν l ) dω from this sample is fitted, yielding a value for the product of the CKM matrix element |Vcb| and the normalisation of the decay form factor at the point of zero recoil of the D∗+ meson F (ω = 1)|Vcb| = (31.4 ± 2.3stat ± 2.5syst) × 10−3. A value for |Vcb| is extracted using theoretical calculations of the form factor normalisation, with the result |Vcb| = (34.5 ± 2.5stat ± 2.7syst ± 1.5theory) × 10−3. From the integrated s the…

Totally dressed SDCI calculations: An application to HF and F2

1995

A previously proposed procedure including the linked and unlinked contributions due to Triple and Quadruple excitations into a size-consistent SDCI-like model has been applied to HF and F2 single-bond systems. The procedure is a non-iterative approximation to the more general total dressing model, which is based on the intermediate Hamiltonians theory. Three basis sets have been employed: the correlation consistent cc-pVTZ basis, a similar one including 3d1f polarization functions, and another including one set of g polarization functions. Excellent agreement with experiment and high-quality calculations is obtained for both equilibrium distances and spectroscopic constants. The possibiliti…

Testing Mode-Coupling Theory for a Supercooled Binary Lennard-Jones Mixture II: Intermediate Scattering Function and Dynamic Susceptibility

1995

We have performed a molecular dynamics computer simulation of a supercooled binary Lennard-Jones system in order to compare the dynamical behavior of this system with the predictions of the idealized version of mode-coupling theory (MCT). By scaling the time $t$ by the temperature dependent $\alpha$-relaxation time $\tau(T)$, we find that in the $\alpha$-relaxation regime $F(q,t)$ and $F_s(q,t)$, the coherent and incoherent intermediate scattering functions, for different temperatures each follows a $q$-dependent master curve as a function of scaled time. We show that during the early part of the $\alpha$-relaxation, which is equivalent to the late part of the $\beta$-relaxation, these mast…

Rovibrational Interactions in the Local-Mode Limit: The (n000) Stretching Overtone Bands of Spherical Tops

1995

Abstract We present a tensorial formalism adapted to the study of the ( n 000) rovibrational stretching states of spherical tops in the local mode limit. A local symmetrized rovibrational basis is built to take explicitly into account the fact that, in these states, the local symmetry is C 3ν rather than T d . Likewise, we introduce local rovibrational operators to build an effective Hamiltonian for these states. We then test our model by fitting the energy levels of 28 SiH 4 for 3 ≤ n ≤ 5.

Types I and II intermittencies in a cascade laser model

1995

Abstract We report on types I and II intermittencies found in a cascade laser model. A continuous transition from one to another type of intermittency, which involves the coexistence of both types of laminar phases within the same time series, is found. Type II intermittency has special characteristics such as its origin at a frequency locked two-torus. When frequency unlocked this torus bifurcates to a three-torus, further giving rise to a type II intermittent like behaviour with new features during the laminar phases.

Optimal Conditions for the Formation of Sotolon from .alpha.-Ketobutyric Acid in the French "Vin Jaune"

1995

Sotolon (3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethyl-2(5H)-furanone) is a key flavor compound in the French flor-sherry Vin Jaune. Sotolon in Vin Jaune (120-268 microgram/L) is produced during the development of yeast film over a period of 6 years. In a synthetic medium resembling wine, the formation of sotolon was studied for different organic acids and acetaldehyde. Then, sotolon was quantified by HPLC on a Lichrospher 100 Diol column. Under the conditions of temperature, pH, and alcoholic content similar to the ageing of wine in barrels, sotolon was formed by a purely chemical mechanism from alpha-ketobutyric acid and acetaldehyde. The formation of sotolon increases by increasing temperature and decreasing p…

Influence of conformational factors on acid-catalyzed cyclizations of germacranolides: Molecular structure of the cyclization products of gallicin an…

1995

Acid-catalyzed cyclization of the natural germacranolide gallicin (8) yielded, among other products, the 1,4-epoxyeudes-manolide 9, which has a trans-fused decaline system. Under the same conditions the closely related germacranolide shonachalin A (8α-hydroxygallicin) (3) cyclized to the eudesmanolide 4 with a cis fused decaline system. The structures of these cyclization products were secured by means of chemical correlations and X-ray diffraction analyses.

The domain structure in PLZT (6-8)/65/35 and spontaneous ferroelectric-relaxor phase transition

1995

Abstract In order to test the hypothesis proposed in Reference 10 about a spontaneous relaxor-ferroelectric phase transition in PLZT (6-7)/65/35 the hysteresis loops and domain structure measurements were carried out. The results confirm this hypothesis. The appearance of the ferroelectric long range order in PLZT with decreasing concentration of La ions is explained by a larger coupling between the feroelectrically active BO6 octahedrons due to smaller concentration of defects and higher dielectric constant.

Nitric oxide synthase: expression and expressional control of the three isoforms.

1995

Three isozymes of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) have been identified. Their cDNA- and protein structures as well as their genomic DNA structures have been described. NOS I (ncNOS, originally discovered in neurons) and NOS III (ecNOS, originally discovered in endothelial cells) are low output, Ca(2+)-activated enzymes whose physiological function is signal transduction. NOS II (iNOS, originally discovered in cytokine-induced macrophages) is a high output enzyme which produces toxic amounts of NO that represent an important component of the antimicrobial, antiparasitic and antineoplastic activity of these cells. Depending on the species, NOS II activity is largely (human) or completely (mouse a…

Three-dimensional ultrasound evaluation of ovarian masses.

1995

Seventy-six women with ovarian masses first detected with two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound were then evaluated with three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound. Two-dimensional ultrasound detected four of five ovarian malignancies. One additional ovarian carcinoma was diagnosed by 3D scanning. Observation of papillary projections, characteristics of cystic walls, and the extent of capsular infiltration of tumors was superior with 3D ultrasound as was the calculation of ovarian volume. Fifty-seven of the women studied underwent surgery within 7 days of 3D ultrasound evaluation. Histologic examination of surgical specimens confirmed the 3D sonographic diagnoses. There was one false positive and one fals…

Ferroelectric domains in BaTiO3powders and ceramics evidenced by X-ray diffraction

1995

Abstract Through three different studies, using BaTiO3 samples, as a powder while heating over the Curie temperature, and as a ceramic while applying an electric field, it is shown how X-ray diffraction (XRD) is able to give information about the evolution of the ferroelectric domain microstructure. Firstly, the relative intensities of the 002 and 200 lines, as a function of the applied electric field, exhibit the motion of the 90[ddot] domain walls. However, XRD is unable to provide any distinction between two 180[ddot] domains. Secondly, the profile of those two lines and of the other double (hhl), (lhh) lines is particular: the unusual diffracted intensity between such double lines has t…

Pion vs. photon absorption on the deuteron

1995

Abstract Using an NN → ΔN transition potential fixed by the reaction pp ↔ dπ+ a good agreement can be obtained also for the reaction γd → pn in the Δ region. Further it is seen that the πNΔ and ϱNΔ parameters of the widely used Bonn potential, fitting the NN sector, yield a transition potential too weak to reproduce the pion production or absorption cross section.

Subclinical thought disorder in first-degree relatives of schizophrenic patients. Results from a matched-pairs study with the Thought Disorder Index

1995

To assess the frequency and quality of formal thought disorder in schizophrenic patients and their first-degree relatives, a consecutive series of 36 unmedicated patients, 20 siblings of these patients and 37 normal control subjects were examined with Holzman's Thought Disorder Index (TDI). As a proof of the internal validity of this tool, the patients demonstrated significantly more thought disorder than the controls as measured by the TDI total score and various subscores, which proved the internal validity of this tool in a German-speaking sample. In addition, in a pairwise comparison with controls who were individually matched by age and sex the patients' siblings had a significantly hi…

Use of three-dimensional ultrasonography for the study of normal and pathologic morphology of the human embryo and fetus: preliminary report.

1995

Our objective was to determine whether three-dimensional ultrasonography offers advantages over two-dimensional sonography for the evaluation of normal and pathologic morphology of human embryos and fetuses at various stages of pregnancy. Our studies suggest that small fetal and embryonic malformations are better defined with 3D sonography. Our experience indicates that 3D sonography allows more detailed visualization of fetal internal structures. We believe that with technical improvements 3D sonography will permit a more complete evaluation of fetuses earlier in gestation than is possible with current 2D sonographic instruments.

Branched polymers starting from ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers

1995

Abstract Polyethylene-graft-poly-2-phenyl-2-oxazoline, polyethylene-graft-poly-2-methyl-2-oxazoline and polyethylenegraft-poly(ethylene oxide) were prepared using poly(ethylene-co-vinyl chloroformate) as macroinitiator or polyfunctional precursor. The vinyl acetate groups of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer were hydrolyzed, the corresponding alcohol functions were converted into chloroformate, which in turn was used for grafting of oxazolines. Comb-like polymers with hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) grafts with definite length were synthesized as well. The resulting graft copolymers were characterized by GPC, IR, and 1 H-NMR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry.

A theoretical determination of the electronic spectrum of formaldehyde

1995

The electronically excited states of formaldehyde are examined by means of multiconfigurational second-order perturbation (CASPT2) theory with extended ANO-type basis sets. The calculations comprised five valence excited states plus all singlet 3s, 3p, and 3d members of the Rydberg series converging on the first ionization. The computed vertical excitation energies were found to be within 0.2 eV of the available experimental energies. Full geometry optimization has been performed for five valence excited states. Assuming a planar geometry, the “0-0” transition for the valence1A1(π → π*) state is calculated to appear near 7.9 eV, close to the (n y → 3p) region. This state is, however, not pl…

Expanded gentamicin volume of distribution in critically ill adult patients receiving total parenteral nutrition

1995

Aminoglycoside antibiotics distribute into the extracellular fluid compartment and are eliminated by the kidney via glomerular filtration. Malnutrition and total parenteral nutrition influence the fluid and electrolyte status of the patient, and cause organ changes. The purpose of this clinical study was to characterize the kinetic behaviour of gentamicin in the parenterally fed critically ill adult patient. Eighty-six critically ill adult patients treated with gentamicin for severe Gram-negative infections were enrolled in the study (mean +/- SD): age, 60 +/- 14 years; weight, 69.4 +/- 10.2 kg; height, 163 +/- 10 cm; 22 females and 64 males. The development of sporangia of Phytophthora infestans

1995

The dynamics of sporulation and zoosporogenesis of Phytophthora infestans in a naturally infected crop of potato cv. Maris Bard and on potted plants of the same cultivar infected artificially with the same fungus are described. Development of sporangiophores and sporangia was synchronous after induction. Migration of several nuclei from the sporangiophore into the sporangium initial was followed by nuclear division, then by degeneration of a proportion of the nuclei. Sporangia then became deciduous, developed papillae and became able to release zoospores in rapid succession. When infected leaves were detached and transferred from the field to moist Petri dishes, sporulation was at first syn…

Proton photoproduction from 12C

1995

Abstract The 12 C(γ,p) differential cross-section in the Δ-resonance region has been measured using tagged photons. Data are presented for 20 MeV wide photon energy bins at 200, 300, 400 and 500 MeV and for proton angles from 52° to 128°. The present 12 C(γ,p) measurements are compared with previous experiments carried out at Frascati, Tokyo and Bonn. Comparisons are also made with theoretical calculations developed at Gent and Valencia which provide an interpretation of the photon reaction mechanism in terms of the major contributing processes. Coincidence data with correlated neutrons, protons and pions are also presented.

Correlation between hydrophobicity of amino acids and retention data in reversed-phase liquid chromatography with micellar eluents

1995

Hydrophobic character is usually expressed in terms of the partition coefficient in 1-octanol-water (log PO/W). However, measurement of this coefficient is often problematic. Retention in micellar liquid chromatography is mainly due to hydrophobic interactions and can also be used as an index of hydrophobicity. A hydrophobicity scale was established with retention data foro-phthalaldehyde (OPA)-N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) amino acid derivatives, using the glycine derivative as reference. Since the OPA-NAC derivatives only differ in the nature of R1 in the amino acid (R1CH(COOH)NH2), in the absence of electrostatic interactions the hydrophobic character of the substituent was responsible for r…

In vitro control of adventitious bud differentiation by inorganic media components in leaves of matureJuniperus oxycedrus

1995

The effects of changes in the concentration of macronutrients on BA-induced caulogenesis from leaves of matureJuniperus oxycedrus cultured on modified Murashige and Skoog or Schenk and Hildebrandt media are reported. The bud-forming capacity of the explants depended mainly on the ratios among the levels of ammonium, nitrate, and potassium. The most favorable media formulations for differentiation of adventitious buds were those with nitrate:potassium, ammonium:potassium, and nitrate:ammonium ratios near 1, around 0.1, and between 9 and 15, respectively. The total ionic strength of the media limited bud induction, but only when a disequilibrium of these ratios was produced.
