Patients with reflux esophagitis have a high rate of relapse within one year after therapy is discontinued.We enrolled 175 adults with endoscopy-confirmed reflux esophagitis in a prospective study comparing five maintenance therapies. Tricritical universality in a two-dimensional spin fluid

Monte Carlo simulations are used to investigate the tricritical point properties of a 2d spin fluid. Measurements of the scaling operator distributions are employed in conjunction with a finite-size scaling analysis to locate the tricritical point and determine the directions of the relevant scaling fields and their associated tricritical exponents. The scaling operator distributions and exponents are shown to match quantitatively those of the 2d Blume-Capel model, confirming that both models belong to the same universality class. Mean-field calculations of the tricritical point properties are also compared with the simulation measurements.

Convergent Strong-Coupling Expansions from Divergent Weak-Coupling Perturbation Theory

Divergent weak-coupling perturbation expansions for physical quantities can be converted into sequences of uniformly and exponentially fast converging approximations. This is possible with the help of an additional variational parameter to be optimized order by order. The uniformity of the convergence for any coupling strength allows us to take all expressions directly to the strong-coupling limit, yielding a simple calculation scheme for the coefficients of convergent strong-coupling expansions. As an example, we determine these coefficients for the ground state energy of the anharmonic oscillator up to 22nd order with a precision of about 20 digits.

Potential linkage for schizophrenia on chromosome 22q12-q13: a replication study.

[1994: Am J Med Genet 54:36–43], we have analyzed 4 microsatellite markers which span this chromosomal region, including the IL2RB locus, for linkage with schizophrenia in 30 families from Israel and Germany. Universal features of I–V characteristics of one‐dimensional arrays of normal metal tunnel junctions have been tested against inhomogenities in the junction parameters, number of junctions in the array, and magnetic field. We find that the differential conductance versus bias voltage obeys the analytic form to within 1% if the fabrication errors are smaller than 10% in junction areas, and if the array has more than ten junctions. Furthermore, the universal relation is insensitive to magnetic field at least up to 8 T.

Retained pieces of wood in the retromaxillary space: a case report.

Detection and operative removal of wood as a foreign body in the cranio-maxillary area has received frequent attention in the literature. However, as a rule, most of the cases described are related to the orbit or the orbito-neurocranial space. Almost no literature exists on the detection and treatment of wooden foreign bodies in the retromaxillary space. The authors present an unusual case of long-term retained wood in this area in a child. The case inspires discussion of the general problem of detecting retained retromaxillary wood, even using modern diagnostic tools in this area and the question of the operative therapy, especially the most favourable surgical access.

Abstract In vivo NMR experiments with a digital 600 MHz instrument, exploiting the natural abundance of 13C, allowed us for the first time to follow the biosynthesis of the newly detected glycoside, methylursubin ( 4- methoxyphenyl -O-β- d -primeveroside ), from 4-methoxyphenol through the intermediate methylarbutin in cell suspensions of the Indian medical plant, Rauwolfia serpentina. The metabolic dynamics indicate that, within 48 hr, 4-methoxyphenol is almost completely converted into the primeveroside, methylursubin. All the compounds were tested as in vitro inhibitors of 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, since enzyme inhibition predicts potential antiinflammatory activity in vivo.
