Distinct Xp11.2 breakpoints in two renal cell carcinomas exhibiting X;autosome translocations

Several human renal cell carcinomas with X;autosome translocations have been reported in recent years. The t(X; I)(p11.2;q21) appears to be a specific primary anomaly, suggesting that tumors with this translocation form a distinct subgroup of RCC. Here we report two new cases, one with a t(X;10)(p11.2;q23), the other with a t(X;1)(p11.2;p34). The common breakpoint in Xp11.2 suggests that they belong to the above-mentioned subset of RCC. Using FISH in conjunction with X-specific YAC clones, we demonstrate that the two new cases exhibited distinct breakpoints within Xp11.2. (C) 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

The surface forces apparatus was used to identify the molecular forces that control the interactions of monoclonal 4-4-20 antifluorescyl IgG Fab' fragments with fluorescein-presenting supported planar bilayers. At long range, the electrostatic force between oriented Fab' and fluorescein monolayers was controlled by the composition of the protein exterior surrounding the antigen-combining site rather than by the overall protein charge. Improvement of fibrinolysis and plasma lipoprotein levels induced by gemfibrozil in hypertriglyceridemia.

A randomized double-blind study was carried out with gemfibrozil (600 mg b.i.d.) vs placebo in 20 patients (twelve males and eight females, age 52 +/- 3 years, BMI 24.2 +/- 0.4) suffering from primary hypertriglyceridemia (Fredrickson's type IV). Each group was treated for a 12 week period with gemfibrozil (n = 10) or placebo (n = 10) patients) in a double-blind fashion. B* production in Z decays

The decay B*→Bγ has been observed with the DELPHI detector at LEP, where the B* meson is produced in Z boson decays. The combination of inclusively reconstructed B mesons with well-measured converted photons yields a measurement of the flavour-averaged B*-B mass difference of 45.5±0.3 (stat.) ±0.8 (syst.) MeV/c2. 95% confidence level upper limits at 6 MeV/c2 are placed on both the isospin (i.e. B+-B0) and the Bs-Bud splitting of the mass difference. The production ratio of B* to B mesons in Z decays is measured to be 0.72±0.03 (stat.) ±0.06 (syst.). The mixed crystal ${\mathrm{Ar}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$(${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$${)}_{\mathit{x}}$ is studied by Monte Carlo (MC) methods for x=0.33, 0.67, and 1.0 over a wide range of temperatures. For x=1 we find first-order transition from ordered cubic to disordered cubic, while for x=0.33 and x=0.67 we find broad nonuniform distribution functions of the local quadrupole Edwards-Anderson order parameter at low temperature. We have lnvestigated the factors which determine the initial response to methimazole (time until euthyroidism Is achieved) In Graves' disease. Multiscaling Properties of Large-Scale Structure in the Universe

The large-scale distribution of galaxies and galaxy clusters in the universe can be described in the mathematical language of multifractal sets. A particularly significant aspect of this description is that it furnishes a natural explanation for the observed differences in clustering properties of objects of different density in terms of multiscaling, the generic consequence of the application of a local density threshold to a multifractal set. The multiscaling hypothesis suggests ways of improving upon the traditional statistical measures of clustering pattern (correlation functions) and exploring further the connection between clustering pattern and dynamics.

Thirty-six complete dentures were remounted both with check-bite as well as central-bearing-point (CBP) registration. Axillary shoot proliferation in cultures of explants from mature Juniperus oxycedrus trees.

We developed procedures for the micropropagation of Juniperus oxycedrus L. using shoot apices or nodal segments from mature plants. Of the media and explants examined, best culture establishment was obtained with shoot apices cultured on modified Schenk and Hildebrandt medium (SH medium) without growth regulators; however, shoot multiplication was only achieved when shoot apices isolated from shoots grown on SH medium without growth regulators were subcultured on SH medium containing 0.5 micro M benzyladenine. None of the auxins and methods tested for root induction provided satisfactory results.

The non-selective methylation of compounds 3a-d using ethereal diazomethane, allowed the synthesis of isomers 4 and 5 which were useful intermediates for the preparation, by a simple approach, of the title compounds 7 and 9. A complete assignment of the chemical shifts to the carbon atoms of the compounds 7 and 9 was performed by different nmr experiments, such as DEPT and XHDEPT for onebond CH correlations and COLOC experiments for long-range C-H correlations.

The eighth component of human complement: molecular basis of C8A (C81) polymorphism.

Using an exon-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by direct DNA sequence analysis we have analyzed the polymorphism of the alpha-chain of the eighth component of human complement (C8) at the DNA level. We found that two common alleles, C8A*A and C8A*B, are characterized by the substitution of a single amino acid (Gln to Lys), which is caused by a point mutation of a single nucleotide (C to A) in exon 3 at position 187 of the mature C8 alpha cDNA sequence. MEASUREMENT OF ALPHA(S) FROM SCALING VIOLATIONS IN FRAGMENTATION FUNCTIONS IN E(+)E(-) ANNIHILATION

A study of scaling violations in fragmentation functions performed by the ALEPH collaboration at LEP is presented. Data samples enriched in uds, c, b and gluon jets, respectively, together with measurements of the longitudinal and transverse inclusive cross sections are used to extract the fragmentation function for the gluon and for each flavour. The measurements are compared to data from experiments at energies between 22 GeV and 91 GeV and scaling violations consistent with QCD predictions are observed. From this, a measurement of the strong coupling constant alpha(s) (M(z)) = 0.126 +/- 0.009 is obtained.

Mate sampling behaviour of black grouse females (Tetrao tetrix)

We studied female mate sampling behaviour in lekking black grouse (Tetrao tetrix). Females mainly visited males occupying territories in the centre of the lek with relatively large territories. They were also more likely to visit males that had high attendance. The same factors were also correlated with male mating success. A multiple regression model including these factors explained more of the variance in female visits per male (53%) than in mating success (33%). Abstract Geometry optimization of [MoO 2 (SCH 2 CO 2 ) 2 ] 2− and [MoO(SCH 2 CO 2 ) 2 ] − systems as models of [MoO 2 (SCPh 2 CO 2 ) 2 ] 2− and [MoO(SCPh 2 CO 2 ) 2 ] − anion complexes have been carried out at STO-3G, 3-21G, LANL1MB and LANL2DZ basis set levels. A comparison of the theoretical results and X-ray experimental data has been performed. STO-3G minimal basis set produces the best geometrical agreement, in particular the distances and orientations of the different ligands linked to molybdenum transition metal. A large structural overlap with STO-3G optimized geometry and X-ray data has been found for the [MoO 2 (SCPh 2 CO 2 ) 2 ] 2− and [MoO(SCPh 2 CO 2 ) 2 ] − anion complexes.

Dynamics of the intensity and optical field amplitude of a coherently pumped far-infrared NH3-laser are measured and characterized. The experimental findings in certain parameter ranges closely follow the dynamics of the Lorenz model and its generalization for laser systems. The position as well as the width of the atomic wave packet passing through an optical cavity may affect the matter-field interaction. As a result, the internal dynamics of a two-level atom, such as the Rabi oscillations or the collapse and revival phenomenon, may be strongly modified with respect to the standard Jaynes-Cummings model. In particular, for a sufficiently large spread of the atomic position, the atomic population inversion displays the characteristic ringing behavior of the Bessel function ${\mathit{J}}_{0}$ differently from the usual full Rabi oscillation.

Effect of low levels of dietary fish oil on fatty acid desaturation and tissue fatty acids in obese and lean rats

The effect of very low levels of dietary long-chain n-3 fatty acids on delta 6 desaturation of linoleic acid (18:2n-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (18:3n-3), and on delta 5 desaturation of dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (20:3n-6), in liver microsomes and its influence on tissue fatty acids were examined in obese and lean Zucker rats and in Wistar rats. Animals fed for 12 wk a balanced diet containing ca. 200 mg of long-chain polyunsaturated n-3 fatty acids per 100 g of diet were compared to those fed the same amount of alpha-linolenic acid. Achalasia and carcinoma of the esophagus

Different figures regarding the relationship between achalasia and carcinoma of the esophagus can be found in the literature. Often achalasia is considered as a risk factor. The author analyzing the data collected from the Shanghai Chest Hospital (S.C.H.) and the Pathophysiology Department of the University of Palermo, both referring centers for esophageal diseases conclude that carcinoma of the esophagus in achalasic patients is just a coincidence and no relationship can be found between the two diseases.

Organization of the major and minor capsid proteins in human papillomavirus type 33 virus-like particles.

The organization of the major (L1) and minor (L2) proteins in the human papillomavirus capsid is still largely unknown. In this study we analysed the disulphide bonding between L1 proteins and the association of L2 proteins with capsomers using virus-like particles obtained in insect cells by co-expression of the L1 and L2 genes of human papillomavirus type 33. About 50% of the L1 protein molecules in these particles (1.29 g/cm3) formed disulphide-bonded trimers. Reduction of the intermolecular disulphide bonds by dithiothreitol (DTT) treatment caused disassembly of virus-like particles into capsomers. Evidence for triaxiality of even-even Ru isotopes has been presented in [2-5], and lifetimes of some of their 2 + states have been measured in fission studies [6-9]. Ecological genetics of a cyclical parthenogen in temporary habitats

Populations of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis inhabiting three temporary ponds in Torreblanca Marsh (Castellon, Spain) were regularly screened for allozyme variation, sexual reproduction levels and population densities during an annual cycle. Relevant ecological parameters in the ponds were also recorded. The electrophoretic survey of the three ponds (Poza Sur, Poza Norte and Canal Central) revealed a high level of overall genetic polymorphism in four marker loci, but only 13 multilocus genotypes were found. The processing of water vapor and aerosols by atmospheric clouds, a global estimate

Recent data published in literature on global cloudiness and precipitation as well as data on updrafts in clouds and their liquid water contents allow us to estimate the global turnover of water vapor and liquid water in the atmosphere. From these turnover rates the global average capacity of clouds to uptake, store and release atmospheric aerosol mass and the rate of wet deposition on the ground was estimated. The association of rubidium-tetraphenylborate (RbTPB) and rubidium-tetrakis(-chlorophenyl)borate (RbTPBCl) ion pairs in the organic solvent 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) have been obtained from condutivity and voltammetric data. Conductivity measurements given K RbTPBCl =43 100 M -1 and yield a lower bound for K RbTPB (K RbTPB > 70000 M -1 ). The latter association constant is at variance with the previously accepted value. A method for analysing voltammetric data which allows for the determination of the association constants is presented. Abstract Data from the NA31 experiment at the CERN SPS have been used for the first search for the decay mode KL → 3γ. Seven events have been found with an estimated background of 6.7 ± 1.5 events. The corresponding upper limit for the branching ratio is Γ(K L → 3γ) Γ(K L → all ) = 2.4 × 10 −7 at the 90% confidence level, assuming a phase-space decay distribution.

Urinary diversion in bladder exstrophy and incontinent epispadias: 25 years of experience.

To determine the optimal surgical approach in achieving complete urinary continence with preservation of the upper urinary tract in the exstrophy-epispadias complex we reviewed the records of patients treated at our institution.From 1968 to July 1994, 115 patients with bladder exstrophy/incontinent epispadias were treated of whom followup was available for 104 and 2 died of causes unrelated to urinary diversion. Experimental muscle lesions were produced in 28 rabbits by stab incision, thus creating a lesion of known extent and site. The changes in the course of healing were followed up and documented at short intervals for a period of two months via sonography. The changes take place in regular course and can be explained by fine tissue changes, taking into consideration the fundamentals of theoretical ultrasound physics. Sonography renders both valuable assistance in diagnosing muscular lesions and in following up the healing process--the latter, however, with some reservations due to the clinical terminology defining the extent of muscular lesions.

The role of interleukin-2 (IL-2) on tumor growth of B16F10 melanoma cells was assessed in two sets of mice with different immune status: normal (immunocompetent) mice and immunodeficient mice. The two sets of animals were treated with cyclophosphamide (CY) or IL-2 alone or with a combined therapy of CY+IL-2. On days 6 and 10 after tumor cell injection, we evaluated the incidence of hepatic B16 melanoma metastases and the percentage of hepatic volume occupied by metastatic tissue. The decomposition of organic matter of source-separated biowaste during composting was followed during 18 months. Compost samples were fractionated into three parts: (i) hot water soluble extract (HWE) (ii) bitumen fraction and (iii) humic substances (humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA)).
