Primary extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas of the uterus and the breast: report of three cases

1995

The authors describe one case of a rare primitive non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the uterus, and two cases of primary non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the breast. Histologically, the uterine lymphoma, although clinically confined to the uterus, was a diffuse large cell lymphoma, group G according to the Working formulation for Clinical Usage. The two cases of breast lymphoma were a centrocytic-centroblastic and a lymphoplasmocytoid non-Hodgkin lymphoma, respectively. All cases were initally treated with radical surgery plus radiotherapy, but the first patient showed an early recurrence at distant sites, which required systemic cytotoxic chemotherapy. The patient with uterine non-Hodgkin lymphoma received a…

Effects of Pentachlorophenol and Biotic Interactions on Soil Fauna and Decomposition in Humus Soil

1995

In a laboratory experiment, effects of chemical stress (pentachlorophenol, PCP, at concentrations of 0, 50, and 500 mg/kg) and biotic interactions (nematodes in the presence or absence of collembolas and enchytraeids) on the community structure of soil animals and decomposition processes were studied. PCP was strongly adsorbed to humus that contained 65% organic matter. Numbers of fungal-feeding nematodes decreased significantly at the highest PCP concentration, while no effects were found in bacterial feeders. There were differences in the numbers of nematodes between different animal combinations, but at the highest PCP concentration, collembolas and enchytraeids had no effect on them. Nu…

Macrocyclic (1,3)- and (1,4)-benzena-(1,4)-piperazinacyclophanes

1995

New large, up to 45-membered macrocycles were synthesised from piperazine and m- and p-2,6-bis(bromomethyl)xylene under high dilution conditions. X-ray structures of compounds 3a, 4a, 5a, and 8b were determined. Surprisingly, none of the macrocycles prepared showed any inclusion properties towards small guest molecules. Instead, the compounds were found to self-organize during the packing process into larger structures due to the complementary of the molecular skeletons. In the crystalline state 3a forms nets, where the macrocycles are bound by HCH…N interactions to each other. 4a exits in a dimeric structure, which, in turn, further extends to a sheet structure. The positively charged phan…

The anionic copolymerization of 5-(N,N-diisopropylamino)isoprene with styrene

1995

The anionic copolymerization of 5-(N,N-diisopropylamino)isoprene (N,N-diisopropyl-2-vinylallylamine) and styrene initiated with alkyllithium compounds is studied. Copolymers obtained from different compositions are characterized by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), differential scanning calorimetry and by 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR spectroscopy. Under these conditions the dialkylaminoisoprene, similar to butadiene and isoprene, is more reactive than styrene and is incorporated faster into the polymer backbone. The incomplete conversion of the monomers has been attributed to the formation of intra-or intermolecular complexes between the Li + counterion at the chain end and amino groups. Because…

Antimetastatic Effect of Immunization with Liposome-Encapsulated Tumor Cell-Membrane Proteins Obtained from Experimental Tumors

1995

Immunization of C57BL/6 mice with tumor-derived membrane-proteins encapsulated in sized liposomes (0.2 microgram/mouse) and composed by phosphatidylcholine or sphingomyelin, significantly reduced the mean values of spontaneous lung metastasis from both B16 (0.7 +/- 0.5 and 1.2 +/- 0.6, respectively) and 3LL (4.8 +/- 2.5 and 7.2 +/- 4.1, respectively) tumors, with respect to control (HEPES) groups (4.8 +/- 1.1 and 19.0 +/- 4.4, respectively). However, no significant antimetastatic effect was observed using free tumor-derived proteins (2 micrograms/mouse) or liposome vehicle alone. Specific humoral immune response after the vaccination was studied by flow cytometry of tumor cells incubated wi…

Imaging of test quartz gratings with a photon scanning tunneling microscope Experiment and theory

1995

We use the differential formalism of the electromagnetic theory of gratings to interpret the images of test sinusoidal or lamellar quartz gratings obtained with a photon scanning tunneling microscope. The period of the grating is 0.5 μm, and the height of the rule is 0.2 μm. It is shown that the images depend strongly on several parameters, such as polarization or angle of incidence, with respect to the ruling direction. A systematic study of the isointensity lines above the gratings as a function of polarization is presented, and it is shown that the image contrast can be increased or decreased depending on the sample–probe distance. To model the interaction of the fiber probe with the ele…

Influence of endothelial nitric oxide on neurogenic contraction of human pulmonary arteries.

1995

The present study was designed to investigate the contribution of the endothelium and that of the L-arginine pathway on the contractile responses of isolated human pulmonary arteries to electrical field stimulation (EFS) and noradrenaline. Isometric tension was measured in artery rings obtained from portions of human lung after thoracic surgery for removal of lung carcinoma (18 patients). Electrical field stimulation (EFS) induced frequency-dependent contractions of isolated human pulmonary arteries which were abolished by tetrodotoxin, guanethidine and prazosin (all at 10(-6) M). The increases in tension were of greater magnitude in arteries denuded of endothelium. NG-nitro-L-arginine meth…

Analysis of Meatal Location in 500 Men

1995

AbstractThe high incidence (70 percent) of anterior hypospadias, mostly without penile curvature, in our pediatric hypospadias patients led us to study the meatal location in normal men to investigate if meatal advancement in all patients with anterior hypospadias can be justified when the wide variation of meatal locations in normal men is considered. The location of the external meatus was analyzed in 500 men (mean age 57 years) with classification of the meatal position in relation to the tip of the glans and corona. Quality of erections and sexual intercourse, presence or absence of penile curvature, urinary stream and ability to void in a standing position were assessed in an interview…

Focal lymphocytic aggregates in chronic hepatitis C: occurrence, immunohistochemical characterization, and relation to markers of autoimmunity.

1995

Intrahepatic lymphocytic aggregates are observed in chronic hepatitis C as well as in autoimmune chronic hepatitis. Autoantibodies and autoimmune manifestations may occur in hepatitis C. It has been suggested that the lymphocytic aggregates play a role in the liver injury of chronic hepatitis C by an immune-mediated mechanism. We studied the occurrence of intrahepatic lymphocytic aggregates and of autoantibodies in a consecutive series of 128 patients with chronic hepatitis C. For the phenotypic characterization of the lymphocytic aggregates cryostat sections and microwaved paraffin embedded sections were immunostained with monoclonal antibodies directed against T cell subsets, B cells, kil…

Evidence for the operation of a cyanide-sensitive oxidase in chlororespiration in the thylakoids of the chlorophyll c-containing alga Pleurochloris m…

1995

For characterisation of chlororespiration in the chlorophyll c-containing alga Pleurochloris meiringensis, we measured the flash-induced electrochromic absorbance changes between 470 and 545 nm and the redox changes of cytochrome f and cytochrome c553. Cytochrome c553 was shown to be present in high amounts (1 mol cytochrome c553 per 300 mol chlorophyll) in this alga and to function as the obligate electron donor for photosystem I instead of plastocyanin. Whereas salicylhydroxamic acid had no effect on the flash-induced absorbance transients, cyanide enhanced the slow-rising (t1/2≈10 ms) kinetic component of the electrochromic absorbance change. Cyanide also accelerated the re-reduction of …

Modulation of Contact Sensitivity Responses by Bacterial Superantigen

1995

Superantigens are potent modulators of the immune system, especially T cells. Therefore, we determined the influence of superantigens on the T-cell-mediated immune response, contact sensitivity. We chose the combination of staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) as superantigen and 2,4-dinitrofluorbenzene (DNFB) as the contact sensitizer, because in BALB/c mice SEB reacts almost exclusively with V beta 8+ T cells, and these cells are capable of transferring contact sensitivity to DNFB from sensitized donors to naive syngeneic recipients. Pretreatment with a single intradermal injection of 50 ng SEB 24 h before DNFB exposure at the same site on the lower abdomen enhanced the induction of contact …

Wine Aroma Concentration by Using a General Purpose simulator (ProSim)

1995

In this work is proposed the application of the ProSim process simulator for the analysis of wine aroma concentration by performing a two-level simulation: First, ProSim is used to attain a preliminary design of a distillation tower, and afterward the simulator is employed to analyze the behavior of the tower in a more precise way. The UNIFAC model was used for nonideal behavior description of the mixtures. In this application, the concentration of a 13-compound mixture was simulated. In fact, the numerical methods implemented in ProSim made it possible to attain the convergence quickly even with minor compounds. The results obtained showed that the use of ProSim results to be very advanta…

Lipoic Acid Improves Nerve Blood Flow, Reduces Oxidative Stress, and Improves Distal Nerve Conduction in Experimental Diabetic Neuropathy

1995

OBJECTIVE To determine whether lipoic acid (LA) will reduce oxidative stress in diabetic peripheral nerves and improve neuropathy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We used the model of streptozotocin-induced diabetic neuropathy (SDN) and evaluated the efficacy of LA supplementation in improving nerve blood flow (NBF), electrophysiology, and indexes of oxidative stress in peripheral nerves affected by SDN, at 1 month after onset of diabetes and in age-matched control rats. LA, in doses of 20, 50, and 100 mg/kg, was administered intraperitoneally five times per week after onset of diabetes. RESULTS NBF in SDN was reduced by 50% LA did not affect the NBF of normal nerves but improved that of SDN i…

Testicular lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma

1995

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is by far the most frequent malignant disease in children. In all, 5% of the boys affected will develop testicular disease either at initial presentation or during the disease course or as the first site of relapse. Modern treatment regimens have reduced the occurrence of testicular relapses, which was more frequent in the 1970s. There is no place for preventive measures for early recognition of testicular leukemia; routine biopsies have been abandoned, and prophylactic irradiation is not justified. In gross overt disease, orchiectomy is justified (1) in cases of huge bulky testicular disease, (2) if unilateral disease is probable, and (3) if radiation of the te…

Progress and controversies in modern treatment of Wilms' tumors.

1995

During the past 25 years the treatment of Wilms' tumors has been refined owing to a series of thoroughly performed clinical studies. The overall prognosis is currently 80% (long-term cures), but different therapeutic issues are still discussed controversially, especially the question of preoperative treatment. A number of different drugs have proved effective in the treatment of Wilms' tumors. It remains to be determined as to which drug combinations are the most effective for which histologic subtype and which stage of disease. It seems that these questions can be answered only if further studies consequently implicate analyses of early and long-term toxicities. The same is true for analys…

Cytokines in the pathophysiology and treatment of chronic B-cell malignancies

1995

Chronic B-cell malignancies are characterized by accumulation of transformed B cells of low proliferative index in lymphatic and extralymphatic tissues. Cytokines do not appear to play a role in the primary step of transformation. However, proliferation as well as inhibition of apoptosis of malignant B cells can readily be explained by cytokine effects. Clinical trials of interferons (IFN) and interleukin-2 alone or in combination have been performed in patients with hairy cell leukemia (HCL), CLL, and low- and intermediate-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. While IFN alpha became standard therapy of HCL, responses in other entities were variable, ranging from 0 to 70% in selected populations. C…

Effects of polysorbate 80 on amiodarone intestinal absorption in the rat

1995

Abstract Amiodarone is a widely used anti-arrhythmic agent which shows physico-chemical properties that are highly suitable for diffusion across lipophilic absorbing membranes, however,.its low aqueous solubility could represent the rate-limiting step for absorption, making it erratic and variable. In a previous paper, the influence of an anionic surfactant (sodium lauryl sulphate) at variable supramicellar concentrations was studied. The absorption rate constants of amiodarone decreased as the surfactant concentration increased, and absorption was unusually fast at lower surfactant concentrations. The previously proposed equations for interpreting the relationships between the amiodarone a…

Anaphylaktischer Schock nach Lipid-Austauschchromatographie bei einer Patientin mit angeborenem IgA-Mangel

1995

We report on a 59-year-old woman patient with selective IgA deficiency and familial hypercholesterinaemia. To lower elevated LDL levels in the patient's blood, immunoadsorption therapy with sheep-anti-human polyclonal antibodies coupled to sepharose columns was administered. During the procedure, the patient developed an anaphylactic shock requiring intensive care treatment. The patient's history revealed a fresh cell therapy with fetal sheep cells 10 years previously. Intracutaneous testing confirmed sensitization to sheep immunoglobulin, which was the most likely reason for the anaphylactic shock.

Relaxant activity of three aporphine alkaloids from Annona cherimolia on isolated aorta of rat.

1995

Abstract In the present study we tested the relaxant effect of three aporphine alkaloids—roemerine, anonaine and dehydroroemerine—isolated from the roots of Annona cherimolia, on isolated strips of rat thoracic aorta. All compounds completely relaxed KCl- and noradrenaline-induced contractions with different potencies depending on their structural characteristics. The experiments, carried out in Ca2+-free medium using two different agonists (noradrenaline and caffeine) which mobilize calcium intracellularly by different mechanisms of action, showed that the alkaloids made no contribution to intracellular calcium processes. The present study provides evidence that the relaxant effects produc…

Antioxidant Profile of Mono-and Dihydroxylated Flavone Derivatives in Free Radical Generating Systems

1995

Abstract A number of free radical generating systems were used to investigate the antioxidant properties and structure-activity relationships of a series of monohydroxylated and dihydroxylated flavones. Ortho-dihydroxylated flavones showed the highest inhibitory activity on en zymic and non-enzymic microsomal lipid peroxidation as well as on peroxyl radical scavenging. Most flavones were weak scavengers of hydroxyl radical, while ortho-dihydroxylated flavones interacted with superoxide anion generated by an enzymic system or by human neutrophils. This series of compounds did not exert cytotoxic effects on these cells. Scavenging of superoxide and peroxyl radicals may determ ine the anti…

Evidence for spontaneous immunosuppression in autoimmune hepatitis

1995

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) runs a variable clinical course. Slow disease progression or even spontaneous remissions can be observed and suggest that the autoimmune process can, at least to a certain extent, be controlled by regulatory elements of the patient's own immune system. In experimental autoimmune hepatitis (EAH) spontaneous recovery is regularly observed and associated with antigen-specific and antigen-nonspecific suppression. The aim of the current study was to search for similar immunoregulatory phenomena in patients with AIH. We examined T-cell reactivity to soluble human liver antigens in 11 patients with active autoimmune hepatitis and 30 patients with other liver diseases (ch…

Complications in radical cystectomy and their prevention

1995

We wish to dedicate this review article on radical cystectomy, its complications and their prevention to the memory of Prof. Luciano Giuliani. The article is based on a work written originally by Jim Montie and many other authors for the consensus meeting on bladder cancer held in Antwerp in 1994 and recently published in a booklet entitled “Global strategy for bladder cancer” (1). With the consent of Montie and the other co-authors, we have prepared on updated Italian version, inserting some parts (such as vascular complications) which were treated more superficially in the preliminary text.

Polaronic relaxation in perovskites

1995

We report a low-temperature loss anomaly in several oxidic perovskites such as ${\mathrm{KTaO}}_{3}$, ${\mathrm{KTaO}}_{3}$:Nb, ${\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$, ${\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$:Ca, ${\mathrm{PbTiO}}_{3}$:La, Cu, and ${\mathrm{BaTiO}}_{3}$:La. We show that this anomaly arises from a low-frequency dielectric relaxation. The activation energy and the relaxation time of this process are nearly the same for all the investigated perovskites disregarding their composition, texture, and ferroelectric properties. We thus ascribe the loss anomaly to the localization of polarons on residual defects. Although the dielectric losses in ${\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$ and ${\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$:Ca are qualitatively …

Successful intermale aggression and conditioned place preference in mice

1995

A. SALVADOR AND V. M. SIMON. Successful intermale aggression and conditioned place preference in mice. PHYSIOL BEHAV 58(2) 323-328, 1995.--This study assessed the reinforcing properties of successful intermale agonistic encounters between OFI male mice using the conditioned place preference paradigm. A three compartment apparatus was used and the procedure consisted of three phases: preconditioning (3 days), conditioning (8 days) and postconditioning (3 tests). Individually housed male mice were allocated to two groups. The aggression group confronted docile opponents in the preconditioning "less-preferred" compartment and were left alone in the "preferred" one. The control group was left a…
