Temperature dependence of refractive index and absorption coefficient of GaSe at 633 nm
1995
Abstract Measurements of the ordinary refractive index and the absorption coefficient ( E /t] to c axis ) of gallium selenide at 633 nm, in the temperature range [20,100] °C, are reported. Useful analytical approximations obtained after a least squares fitting process are provided, as well. These results are basic for any theoretical model of nonlinear and bistable optical devices based on GaSe.
Polymerase chain reaction analysis of the Xba I polymorphism of the human complement C4 genes provides evidence for strong haplotype conservation.
1995
The genes coding for the two isotypes of the fourth component of human complement, C4A and C4B, are located between the HLA-B and -DR loci of the MHC. We studied the linkage relationship of the previously described XbaI RFLP to obtain further insight into the evolution of the tandemly arranged C4 genes. Using exon-specific PCR amplification followed by restriction analysis and direct DNA sequencing, the polymorphic site could be located in exon 40 of the C4 gene (cDNA position 5095). The polymorphism does not change an amino acid residue. Using nested PCR amplification with isotype-specific primers to amplify either C4A or C4B alleles the haplotype arrangement of the XbaI sites in both isot…
Discovery and molecular characterization of a plasmid localized in Buchnera sp. bacterial endosymbiont of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi
1995
We have identified and completely sequenced a novel plasmid isolated from the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi. Evidence which suggests that the plasmid occurs localized within the bacterial endosymbionts is presented. The plasmid contains the four genes that constitute the entire leucine operon. This fact makes it really unique since most plasmids are dispensable and lack genes that encode essential anabolic functions. Four more phloem-feeding aphid species also seem to contain homologous plasmids. Although further work is necessary, we hypothesize that this plasmid has appeared during the evolution of the symbiotic association between the aphid and the bacterial endosymbiont. The fact that this p…
Evaporation of tungsten oxides: A mass-spectrometric study of the vapour contents
1995
Abstract The evaporation of bulk oxides of WO2 and WO3 and oxidised tungsten surfaces (metallic tungsten heated in an oxygen atmosphere) have been studied by the means of mass-spectrometry. The principal constituents of the vapour are found to be molecules of WO2, WO3, W2O6 and W3O9. These results differ from earlier reports, where the presence of molecules smaller than W3O9 in the mass-spectrum was interpreted as an artifact due to electron impact dissociation of larger polymers.
Aeromonas encheleia sp. nov., isolated from European Eels
1995
Four strains isolated from European eels in Valencia, Spain, were found to constitute a DNA relatedness group which is 0 to 50% related to the 13 species and DNA group 11 of the genus Aeromonas. Phenotypically, these strains have all of the properties that define the genus Aeromonas. However, they differ from the previously described Aeromonas species by three or more properties. The strains are positive for motility, growth at 37 degrees C, indole production, and arginine dihydrolase activity. They exhibit negative reactions in tests for growth at 42 degrees C and in thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose medium (Oxoid), Simmons citrate tests, and tests for lysine and ornithine decarboxyla…
Palynological variations and sedimentary cycles in the Jurassic from the Paris basin
1995
Abstract Two studies, one on Hettangian dolomitic cap rocks over “Gaz de France” gas storage reservoir rocks at Sologne, and the other on two separate sections in Dogger formations in Burgundy, conducted at the Palynology Laboratory of Strasbourg, illustrate that a palynological approach can lead to a considerable refinement of knowledge in sequence stratigraphy. The palynological study of the dolomitic cap rocks at Sologne dates them as Hettangian, distinguishes microfloristical assemblage types within the sequence, and establishes palynofacies variations with basin evolution. The evidence suggests that palynological variations in the Hettangian rocks are attenuated, reflecting restricted …
Microscopic description of the nucleon- Delta interaction in the quark cluster model.
1995
By using a nonrelativistic quark cluster model to describe baryonic systems, we generate a nucleon-{Delta} potential from the elementary interaction between constituents. The basic quark-quark potential used provides, when applied to the nucleon-nucleon system, an adequate description of the scattering phase shifts, the deuteron properties and the nonstrange baryonic spectroscopy. Special attention is paid to the short-range behavior of the interaction and its connection to the quark Pauli principle. This establishes a conceptual difference with meson-exchange models where the interaction, due to the lack of data, is not even well defined.
Monte-Carlo Simulation of 3-Dimensional Glassy Polymer Melts: Reptation Versus Single Monomer Dynamics
1995
A polymer melt is simulated at finite temperature by the Monte-Carlo method. We use a coarse-grained model for the polymer system, the bond-fluctuation model. Static properties of the melt can be obtained by generating configurations not with single-monomer- dynamics which moves individual monomers locally, but reptation-dynamics which allows collec- tive motion of the chains. This algorithm can produce equilibrated configurations much faster. It is demonstrated that static properties do not differ from those obtained by single-monomer- dynamics. Values of the radius of gyration, the mean square bond length and similar quantities for different temperatures and densities are presented.
Evolving mobile robots in simulated and real environments.
1995
The problem of the validity of simulation is particularly relevant for methodologies that use machine learning techniques to develop control systems for autonomous robots, as, for instance, the artificial life approach known as evolutionary robotics. In fact, although it has been demonstrated that training or evolving robots in real environments is possible, the number of trials needed to test the system discourages the use of physical robots during the training period. By evolving neural controllers for a Khepera robot in computer simulations and then transferring the agents obtained to the real environment we show that (a) an accurate model of a particular robot-environment dynamics can …
Testing mode-coupling theory for a supercooled binary Lennard-Jones mixture
1995
Abstract We have performed a molecular dynamics computer simulation study to investigate the dynamical behavior of a supercooled simple liquid for comparison with the predictions of mode-coupling theory (MCT). By scaling the intermediate scattering function by the α-relaxation time r we find that the correlators fall onto a master curve extending over several decades in time. Thus we find that the time temperature superposition principle holds. In the late β-relaxation regime this master curve can be fitted very well by a master curve predicted by the idealized version MCT. However, there is no evidence for the presence of the critical decay predicted by the theory for the early part of the…

The. A. explains the meaning of some Iranian technical words, which appear in anatomical Arab works. They are interesting, not only because they are nearly unknown, but also because they are an evidence of the influence of Iranian culture on the rise of Arabian scientific medicine, and so an encouragement to further investigation on this subject.

Photo- and electroproduction of eta mesons
1995
Eta photo- and electroproduction off the nucleon is investigated in an effective lagrangian approach that contains Born terms and both vector meson and nucleon resonance contributions. In particular, we review and develop the formalism for coincidence experiments with polarization degrees of freedom. The different response functions appearing in single and double polarization experiments have been studied. We will present calculations for structure functions and kinematical conditions that are most sensitive to details of the lagrangian, in particular with regard to contributions of nucleon resonances beyond the dominant $S_{11}$(1535) resonance.
Sequencing and analysis of the gene encoding the α-toxin of Clostridium novyi proves its homology to toxins A and B of Clostridium difficile
1995
A library of total Clostridium novyi DNA was established and screened for the alpha-toxin gene (tcn alpha) by hybridization with oligonucleotides derived from a partial N-terminal sequence and by using specific antisera. Overlapping subgenic tcn alpha fragments were isolated and subsequently the total sequence of tcn alpha was determined. The 6534 nucleotide open reading frame encodes a polypeptide of M(r) 250,166 and pI 5.9. The N-terminal alpha-toxin (Tcn alpha) sequence MLITREQLMKIASIP determined by Edman degradation confirmed the identity of the reading frame and the assignment of the translation start point. The toxin is not modified posttranslationally at its N-terminus nor does it co…
Gauge invariance and unstable particles.
1995
A gauge-independent approach to resonant transition amplitudes with nonconserved external currents is presented, which is implemented by the pinch technique. The analytic expressions derived with this method are $U(1)_{em}$ invariant, independent of the choice of the gauge-fixing parameter, and satisfy a number of required theoretical properties, including unitarity. Although special attention is paid to resonant scatterings involving the $\gamma WW$ and $ZWW$ vertices in the minimal Standard Model, our approach can be extended to the top quark or other unstable particles appearing in renormalizable models of new physics.

Unrestricted Shapes of Jellium Clusters
1995
A jellium model with a completely relaxable background charge density is used to study metal clusters containing 2 to 22 electrons. The resulting shapes of the clusters exhibit breaking of axial and inversion symmetries, as well as molecular formation. The clusters without inversion symmetry are soft against deformation. The strongly deformed 14-electron cluster is found to be semi-magic. Stable-shape isomers are predicted.
Contactus adherens, a special type of plaque-bearing adhering junction containing M-cadherin, in the granule cell layer of the cerebellar glomerulus.
1995
In the glomeruli of the granule cell layer of mammalian cerebellum, neuronal extensions are interconnected by numerous small, nearly isodiametric (diameters up to 0.1 micron), junctions previously classified as puncta adherentia related to the vinculin-containing, actin microfilament-anchoring junctions of the zonula adherens of epithelial and certain other cells. Using immunofluorescence and immunoelectron microscopy, we have found, however, that these junctions are negative for E- and VE-cadherin, for desmosomal cadherins, and also for vinculin, alpha-actinin, and desmoplakin, but they do contain, in addition to the protein plakoglobin common to all forms of adhering junctions, the plaque…
Cluster Formation during Expansion of Hot and Compressed Nuclear Matter Produced in Central Collisions of Au on Au at 250AMeV
1995
Complete distributions of the light and intermediate mass fragments ({ital Z}=1--6) produced within the polar angular range 1{sup {circ}}{le}{Theta}{sub lab}{le}30{sup {circ}} in highly central collisions of 250{ital A} MeV Au+Au are presented. The results of this measurement and a model analysis are used to study the expansion and clustering of the hot and compressed transient state formed in central collisions of such a heavy system. The influence of the initial conditions on the final observables is discussed.
Identification of an endothelial cell binding site on kininogen domain D3
1995
High and low molecular mass kininogen, two multidomain plasma proteins, bind to endothelial cells, platelets, and neutrophils in the intravascular compartment. The specific cell attachment site on their common heavy chain is mediated by domain-3, a cystatin-like structure with inhibitory capacity for papain-like proteinases (Jiang, Y., Müller-Esterl, W., and Schmaier, A. H. (1992) J. Biol. Chem. 267, 3712-3717). In this report, the domain-3 cell binding site is determined by an antibody-directed strategy. The epitope of monoclonal antibody HKH15, which binds to domain-3 and blocks the binding of kininogens to platelets and endothelial cells, was mapped using seven synthetic peptides, which …

Meiofauna ratios as environmental indicators in the profundal depths of large lakes.
1995
Two sets of samples from Lake Paijanne and one from Lake Ladoga were used to examine the relations between the meiofauna and environmental variables. The most obvious indicators of an unpolluted environment were, in order of importance, the true meiofauna/total meiofauna ratio, the proportion of Aeolosomatidae, the proportion of Harpacticoida (excluding C. staphylinus), the meiofauna/macrofauna biomass ratio, the proportion of Naididae and the A. crassa + P. schmeili/true meiofauna ratio. Conversely, the clearest indicators of a polluted environment were the proportion of resting stages of Cyclopinae, the Nematoda/non-resting Copepoda ratio, and the proportions of Tubificidae, Oligochaeta, …
Tilted phases of fatty acid monolayers
1995
X‐ray diffraction data from water‐supported monolayers of fatty acids with chain lengths from 19 to 22 is presented. The structures of the tilted mesophases L2’, L2, and Ov are characterized in detail. The contributions to the unit cell distortion from the tilt and the ordering of the backbone planes of the molecules are separated. It is shown that at the swiveling transition L2’–L2, not only the tilt azimuth but also the packing of the backbone planes change discontinuously. We demonstrate that the tilting transition LS–L2 is accompanied by the ordering of the backbone planes and may be discontinuous. Evidence is presented for a herringbone ordering transition within the L2 region. The dis…
