Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease characterised by marked hyperproliferation of keratinocytes in association with vascular expansion, leukocyte infiltration and lymphocyte activation1. Cytokines are thought to play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis. It is speculated that a dysregulation of the cytokine network involving tumor-necrosis-factor-a (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) might be the basic mechanism of the psoriatic inflammatory response2. TNF-α is the prototype of a proinflammatory peptide exerting immunomodulatory effects. A Cap-Model for Masonry-Like Material Constitutive Laws

An accurate description of the constitutive behaviour of masonry-like materials is an essential target for obtaining an effective analysis-tool of masonry structures. In this paper an idealized constitutive model of such materials is proposed taking into account some peculiar features of masonry: -i) a limited strength in compression; -ii) a very limited ability to withstand tensile stresses; -iii) a softening behaviour due to a progressive reduction of the tensile strength during a monotonically increasing loading.

In a 2 × 2 × 2 design, eighty smokers were exposed to an anti-smoking appeal attributed either to an expert source (superior status) or a minority source (inferior status). Subjects were either allowed or not to smoke during the experiment. In addition subjects had to memorize part of the appeal and a recall task either followed after reading the appeal (completed task) or not (uncompleted task). The results show that the expert source produces more attitude change than the minority when the tension induced by the source is weakened (either by the opportunity to smoke or task completion). For the first time, multihadronic production from single tagged gammagamma collisions has been studied, where one of the scattered leptons was tagged at very low virtual photon absolute mass squared ( = 0.06GeV/(c2))2 ). Data collected during 1991 and 1992 in the DELPHI experiment at LEP are shown to agree well with predictions which included the non-perturbative vector meson dominance model in which the interacting photons are assumed to have converted into a vector meson (rho, omega or pi), a quark-parton model which describes direct photon interactions and a QCD-based model which considers the photon to have quark and gluon structure functions. En este caso se trata de la persona del valenciano Antonio Pontons y el escultor genovés Ponzanelli. Éste es autor de las seis esculturas que adornaban el llamado "Huerto de Pontons", mansión y jardines situados en las cercanías de la ciudad de Valencia. Dicho huerto fue destruido a principios del presente siglo aunque se conservan las esculturas.

The effects of 18 wk of intensive strength and endurance training on knee extensor, knee flexor, and lower leg muscle mass and composition were studied in 76- to 78-yr-old women. Muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), lean tissue CSA, and relative proportion of fat were determined using computed tomography. The strength-trained women increased their total muscle lean tissue CSA of the thigh (1.5%; P = 0.035), quadriceps CSA (4.5%; P = 0.021), quadriceps lean tissue CSA (5.8%, P = 0.009), and mean Hounsfield unit of the lower leg muscles (11.2%; P = 0.035) compared with the changes that occurred in the control group during the experiment. From geomorphological, sedimentological and chronometrical studies, different morphostratigraphic units are determined. Results point out the development of several transgressive phases. Continuous flow-injection-atomic absorption spectrometric method for the determination of Ondansetron

Abstract A flow-injection procedure for the indirect determination of the new drug Ondansetron is proposed. The method is based on the reaction of the drug in an oxidative solid-phase reactor included in the flow assembly. The reactor was made by lead dioxide physically entrapped by polymerization; the released lead(II) was monitored by atomic absorption spectrometry at 217.0 nm. The procedure gave a linear calibration graph up to 20 μg ml−1 of Ondansetron with a sample throughput of 338 samples h−1.

Optical response and shapes of charged sodium clusters; an analogue of the nuclear giant dipole response

Collective vibrations of de-localized electrons against the positive charged ionic background in sodium clusters (plasmon resonances) and the collective vibrations of protons against neutrons in nuclei (giant dipole resonances) have several features in common. However, fundamental differences exist due to differences in the two media; the nucleus is a quantum liquid whereas the metallic medium is more like a plasma with classical positive ions and quantized electrons. The similarities and differences are illustrated by results from optical response measurements for charged sodium clusters with 14 to 48 atoms.

A total of 291 enlarged lymph nodes showing a range of reactive-inflammatory processes, primary and metastatic neoplasms were studied to determine the distribution and immunoprofile of their cytokeratin-positive interstitial reticulum cells (CIRC) in comparison with normal nodes. In 258/291 nodes (89%), CIRC numbers were distinctly increased in the subcapsular, paracortical and, occasionally, in the medullary zones; often, these increased CIRC formed networks around follicles, sinuses and vessels. Cobalt(II) has been extensively used as a spectroscopic probe in many proteins, mainly replacing zinc, but also substituting iron, manganese and copper ions. The relatively short electronic relaxation times of high spin cobalt(II) makes this ion suitable as a paramagnetic probe for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. A survey of the NMR studies performed in cobalt substituted proteins is shown. The adaptation of computerized tomography for stereotactic operations requires the transformation of the coordinates of the target point from the CT image space into the stereotactic frame space. Two basic solutions for this transformation are realized in the most of the contemporary stereotactical systems. The indirect geometric method adjusts the frame coordinate system mechanically and identifies its origin in the CT image. A Theoretical approach to the (pi-, gamma gamma) reaction in nuclei

We have studied the pion^{-} capture in nuclei leading to two photons, using improved many body methods which have been tested with success in one photon pion^{-} radiative capture, muon^{-} capture and neutrino scattering. The qualitative features of the experimental data are reproduced but there are still some disagreement at small relative photon angles. The reaction is a potential source of information on details of the gamma-gamma-pion-pion vertex where chiral corrections can be relevant. New and more precise experiments are planned which make calculations like the present one relevant and opportune.

Se han valorado radiografías AP de pelvis obtenidas tras colocación de 102 pró- tesis no cementadas en 97 pacientes: 51 eran del tipo cótilo roscado (CR), y 51 del tipo cótilo impactado (CI). Se ha medido el ángulo de inclinación, la posición del cotilo, el grado de centraje, el grado de protrusión/extrusión, y la superficie de contacto entre cótilo y la cavidad acetabular. Globahnente los CR quedan implantados más verticalmente que los CI (p=0,006), así como más lateralizados (p=0,02). El porcentaje de cótilos bien centrados en relación al acetábulo es mayor entre los CI que entre los CR (p=0,002).
