The Ising transition in 2D simplicial quantum gravity - can Regge calculus be right?

We report a high statistics simulation of Ising spins coupled to 2D quantum gravity in the Regge calculus approach using triangulated tori with up to $512^2$ vertices. For the constant area ensemble and the $dl/l$ functional measure we definitively can exclude the critical exponents of the Ising phase transition as predicted for dynamically triangulated surfaces. We rather find clear evidence that the critical exponents agree with the Onsager values for static regular lattices, independent of the coupling strength of an $R^2$ interaction term. For exploratory simulations using the lattice version of the Misner measure the situation is less clear.

Measure dependence of 2D simplicial quantum gravity

We study pure 2D Euclidean quantum gravity with $R^2$ interaction on spherical lattices, employing Regge's formulation. We attempt to measure the string susceptibility exponent $\gamma_{\rm str}$ by using a finite-size scaling Ansatz in the expectation value of $R^2$. To check on effects of the path integral measure we investigate two scale invariant measures, the "computer" measure $dl/l$ and the Misner measure $dl/\sqrt A$.

$\eta -\eta^\prime$ Photoproduction and the Axial Isoscalar Neutral Current Coupling

We show that coherent $\eta$ and $\etap$ photoproduction by means of the Primakoff Effect on the proton depends on the strange component of the neutral axial current coupling. We construct polarization asymmetries that are sensitive to this coupling through the $\gamma - Z$ interference. The $\eta^\prime$ is not a Goldstone boson of a spontaneously broken chiral symmetry, but a phenomenological analysis of the $\eta$ and $\eta^\prime$ production through chiral perturbation theory allows to calculate the observables of interest. The polarized proton or polarized photon asymmetries are predicted to be close to $10^{-4}$ for $-q^2 \sim 0.1-0.5\;\mbox{\rm GeV}^2$.

Cyclic voltammetric analysis of pH-dependent complex formation equilibria in anion coordination chemistry

A procedure to analyze pH-dependent complex formation equilibria from cyclic voltammetry is described. Application to adduct formation equilibria between [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) and [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) with different polyammonium receptors is discussed. Extension to the interaction of substrates such as ATP, NAD(+), NADP(+), and carboxylate ions with these receptors by means of competitive interaction with hexacyanoferrate(II) ion is presented.

Unrestricted shapes of light nuclei in the local-density approximation: Comparison with jellium clusters

Abstract The shapes of light nuclei are studied within density-functional theory. The Kohn-Sham method and the local-density approximation are used. No symmetry restrictions are imposed. A parallel study is made of monovalent atomic clusters described on the jellium model. The shapes obtained for nuclei with Z = N = 2–22 show a striking similarity to those of atomic clusters of an equal number of valence electrons. Moments of inertia, when suitably normalized, are virtually identical. The calculated nuclear quadrupole moments are found insensitive to the effective interaction and in good agreement with experiment. Similar shape coexistence is established in both systems.

Pro-oxidant effects of 7-hydroperoxycholest-5-en-3β-ol on the copper-initiated oxidation of low density lipoprotein

AbstractIn low density lipoproteins (LDL) supplemented with aged cholesterol and oxidized in the presence of Cu2+, an increase of the lipid oxidation parameters was observed compared with pure cholesterol-enriched LDL. A compound, identified as 7-hydroperoxycholesterol (7HPC), isolated from aged cholesterol and added to LDL, reproduced the above effects. The results indicate that the pro-oxidant effect of 7HPC is dependent on the hydroperoxy group since the corresponding alcohol derivative, 7α-hydroxycholesterol, had no such effect. AbstractTo explore the functional role of TIMP-2 in liver, we determined TIMP-2 mRNA levels in primary rat hepatocytes and in total rat liver. Rat hepatocytes constitutively express TIMP-2 mRNA at a low level. Incubation with dexamethasone, prostaglandin E2 and a combination of inflammatory cytokines leads to an up-regulation of TIMP-2 mRNA. In rats in vivo we found a dramatic increase of TIMP-2 expression after intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide. Compared to our previous findings on TIMP-1 we conclude that TIMP-2 mRNA expression is regulated in a distinct and partially opposite manner. Fragment Flow and the Multifragmentation Phase Space

Fragment distributions have been measured for Au+Au collisions at [ital E]/[ital A]=100 and 1000 MeV. A high detection efficiency for fragments was obtained by combining the ALADIN spectrometer and the MSU-Miniball/WU-Miniwall array. At both energies the maximum multiplicity of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) normalized to the size of the decaying system is about one IMF per 30 nucleons but the element distributions show significant differences. Within a coalescence picture the suppression of heavy fragments in central collisions at [ital E]/[ital A]=100 MeV may be related to a reduction of the density in momentum space which is caused by the collective expansion.

High-statistics study of f0(1500) decay into π0π0

Abstract A partial-wave analysis of the reaction p p →π 0 π 0 π 0 has been performed using a high-quality high-statistics data set of 712 000 events. In addition to the f0(975) and f0(1300), the scalar resonance with mass m = (1500 ± 15) MeV and width Γ = (120 ± 25) MeV is necessary to describe the data.

Photokinetic examination of (Z,E,E)-4,4′-distyrylazobenzene

Abstract 4,4′-Distyrylazobenzenes demonstrate a photokinetic equilibrium and a superimposed thermal backward reaction in which the absorption coefficient of one of the partners in the equilibrium is principally unknown. Using the dependence of the photostationary state on the irradiation intensity, the photochemical quantum yields ϕ 1 A and ϕ 2 B were determined, as well as the thermal rate constant k , as a function of the irradiation and observation wavelengths. Experimental difficulties and the wavelength dependence of ϕ 1 A and ϕ 2 B are discussed.

A-ring annulated heterocycles, the isoxazole 6, the pyrazoles 8 and the pyrimidines 9 are prepared starting from 2-hydroxymethylene canrenone 1. Binding studies were carried out with the compounds 1 and 6-8 using estrogen, progesterone, androgen, gluco- and mineralocorticoid receptors as well as the serum proteins SHBG and CBG: the substances were inactive on the receptor level. 1, 7 and 8a show weak binding affinity to CBG.

Effects of physico-chemical parameters of a model wine on the binding of γ-decalactone on bovine serum albumin

Abstract To understand the effect of temperature, pH and the composition of alcoholic beverages in flavour-protein interactions, the binding of γ-decalactone to bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated using the equilibrium dialysis method. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the affinity of aroma compound for BSA is higher at 10 °C than at 20 and 30 °C, while the number of binding sites (n = 6–7) is not modified at the three temperatures. pH did not have any appreciable effect on flavour binding in the presence of ethanol, but it was observed that a decrease of 1.8 pH unit reduces binding by 40% in its absence. Cathepsin D content and activity were determined in matched paired sets of colorectal tumor tissue and normal mucosa and correlated with a number of biological and clinical parameters. Significantly higher cathepsin D activity was measured in tumor cytosol compared to paired normal mucosa (p < 0.02), in Dukes’ stage A tumors compared to Dukes’ B and C (p < 0.05), in tumors < 5 cm compared to those > 5 cm, or in tumors with a low proliferation rate compared to those with a high proliferation rate (p < 0.05). Streptococcus pyogenes, the most significant streptococcal species in clinical medicine, expresses surface proteins with affinity for several human plasma proteins. Here we report that kininogens, the precursors to the vasoactive kinins, bind to the surface of S. pyogenes. M protein, a surface molecule and a major virulence factor-in these bacteria, occurs in > 80 different serotypes. Owing to participation of Latvian and Swedish scientists in the field of chemically sensitive FET and MOS structures it was possible to utilize the technological facilities of the Microelectronics enterprise in Latvia in making an integrated smart sensor as a matrix of chemically sensitive FETs by using silicon based microtechnology. Thereby the first steps of µTAS in Latvia are made in the direction of integration of solid state ionic materials with FET and MOS structures to develop new chemically sensitive structures and systems.

The pulmonary surfactant lines as a complex monolayer of lipids and proteins the alveolar epithelial surface. The monolayer dynamically adapts the surface tension of this interface to the varying surface areas during inhalation and exhalation. Its presence in the alveoli is thus a prerequisite for a proper lung function. The lipid moiety represents about 90% of the surfactant and contains mainly dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG). A simple algorithm to evaluate the local symmetry at each point of a closed contour

In this work, contour symmetry is evaluated as a numeric feature for each point of the shape outline, using only the positions of a local vicinity of points. A measure is defined, named Local Symmetric Deficiency (LSD), so that the lower this quantity is, the higher the symmetry will be in the local region considered. This approach is simpler than related previous ones both from a conceptual point of view and for its implementation, since it is reduced just to a suitable manipulation of the Freeman chain code of the curve studied. Its computational cost is very low and it has the advantages of a parallel algorithm, since values for LSD can be computed for each point independently.
