Pathomorphology of hereditary sensory neuropathies

1995

Currently, the hereditary sensory neuropathies (HSN) — because of the involvement of the autonomic system recently called HSAN — comprise types I–V predicated on clinical differences. This classification of HSAN I–V seems to be uncontested, at the present time. Morphologically, individual forms I–V only differ in the non-specific loss or lack of myelinated and unmyelinated nerves in varying degrees in that in HSAN II large myelinated axons are most affected, in HSAN IV unmyelinated axons are almost absent; but each HSAN is considered an axonal type of neuropathy. Early onset, slow or no progression of the neuropathic process, and little or no evidence of ongoing degeneration suggest maldeve…

Collision Orbits in the Isosceles Rectilinear Restricted Problem

1995

In the study of the Collinear Three-Body Problem, McGehee (1974) introduced a new set of coordinates which had the effect of blowing up the triple collision singularity. Subsequently, his method has been used to analyze some other collision or singularities. Recently, Wang (1986) introduced another transformation which differs from the McGehee’s coordinates in the fact that the blowing-up factor is now the potential function, U, instead of the moment of inertia, I. Meyer and Wang (1993) have applied this method to the Restricted Isosceles Three-body Problem with positive energy and Cors and Llibre (1994) to the hyperbolic restricted three-body problem. In this paper we study the singulariti…

Molecular Scale Study of Domain Boundaries and Frictional Stick-Slip Motion on Lipid Bilayers

1995

A highly 2-dimensional (2D) anisotropic crystal formation of an organic one component lipid bilayer system is presented measured in air by atomic force microscopy. 2D domains with different crystal orientation could be observed. Their molecularly smooth domain boundaries are perceived to be either commensurable or incommensurable lattice joints. Differences in the orientation of the crystal lattice affects dynamic friction on the micrometer scale. High resolution friction images provide stick-slip motions depending on the scan direction in respect to the lattice orientation. It is shown that sliding friction can be determined by an averaged value of the molecular stick-slip motion of the fr…

Deterministic generalized automata

1995

A generalized automaton (GA) is a finite automaton where the single transitions are defined on words rather than on single letters. Generalized automata were considered by K. Hashiguchi who proved that the problem of calculating the size of a minimal GA is decidable.

Stimulation of root and somatic embryo production in Euconymus europaeus L. by an inhibitor of polyamine biosynthesis

1995

In vitro formation of roots and somatic embryos is obtained from cotyledon explants of a Spindle tree (Euonymus europaeus L.) cultured on two different media: a medium inducing callus formation and the production of roots, and a medium inducing callus formation, root and somatic embryo production. We studied the effects of α-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), a specific, irreversible inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) on root and somatic embryo production, growth and titers of putrescine in Euonymus explants and explant-derived calli. Early changes in putrescine levels were detected in both cultures before the visible emergence of roots or somatic embryos. DFMO rapidly inhibited putres…

Saber morir.

Nestling diet and fledgling production of eurasian kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) in eastern Spain.

1995

We studied 81 Eurasian kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) nests in the Alto Palancia region (Castel16n, eastern Spain) from 1982-87. Fledgling production was recorded in routine visits to the nests, and the diet was determined by pellet analysis. The mean date of laying was 8 May (N -- 24, SD -- 11.5), similar to that of populations breeding further north in Europe. On average, each successful pair produced four fledglings per year (N = 47, SD = 0.7, range = 2-5), and no significant differences in fledging success were found among years. Grasshoppers formed the bulk of the diet during the nestling period. Mammals and birds were scarcely represented. The number of fledglings per successful pair was…

Centre et périphérie fondements et critères

1995

The concept of center is considered as one of the most important in spatial economy and in geography. The dualism center - periphery is mentioned in most varied contexts and even with most various meanings. The aim of this article is to bring the foundations of this inseparable couple to light. The idea of center, as in geometry, evokes first a privileged position. But a center is also a place of strong concentration of population, economicactivities, culture and authorities. The structure center - periphery created by a combination of the two preceding criteria is source of inequalities, asymmetries, polarization and domination. But the dualism center - periphery is too reducing. It is nec…

Energie informatique et choix de matériel

1995

The choice of computers been made according to a minimax: one chooses the most powerful computer in the less powerful category. We show here that, in a simple case, if one takes into account the time of equipment utilization, this rule can be given in cause. We study then a case more complicated including some technical parameters like the case of multiprocessor machine and including other human parameters like the intensity of task submission.

Recent Developments in one and two Pion Production in Elementary Reactions and Few-Body Systems

1995

In this talk we cover several issues concerning pion production. The first one is the pp → ppπ 0 reaction where an alternative explanation based on the off shell extrapolation of the πN amplitude is offered. A recent model for the γN → ππN reaction is presented and a new kind of exchange current is constructed from it which allows one to address problems like double ∆ photoproduction from the deuteron. Finally the (γ, ππ) reaction in nuclei is studied and shown to be highly sensitive to the renormalization of the pions in nuclei.

A method for the probabilistic analysis of nonlinear systems

1995

Abstract The probabilistic description of the response of a nonlinear system driven by stochastic processes is usually treated by means of evaluation of statistical moments and cumulants of the response. A different kind of approach, by means of new quantities here called Taylor moments, is proposed. The latter are the coefficients of the Taylor expansion of the probability density function and the moments of the characteristic function too. Dual quantities with respect to the statistical cumulants, here called Taylor cumulants, are also introduced. Along with the basic scheme of the method some illustrative examples are analysed in detail. The examples show that the proposed method is an a…

El ferrocarril minero de Ojos-Negros a Sagunt. Arqueología industrial y patrimonio ferroviario

1995

The Destiny of Narrative at the End of the Millenium

1995

The state of the narratives that circulate at the end of the 20th century is a common preoccupation of the philosophy, the semiotics, the anthoropology and other disciplines. This text, which is an introduction of a monographic issue on the forms of narratives in current audiovisual discourses, poses the problems of repetition, legitimacy and function in our society.

Visual defects in subjects with Down’s syndrome

1995

Because the incidence of other visual defects is much higher in cases of Down’s syndrome than in individuals with other forms of retardation (Gardiner, 1967; Aitchison et al., 1990), we tested the color vision of a population of Down’s syndrome patients, using Ishihara plates and the Davico anomaloscope. The Down’s syndrome group had a significantly higher proportion of color deficiencies than either normal controls or a matched mentally retarded population. Refractive errors were corrected with static retinoscopy, and spatial contrast sensitivity was measured with the Vistech test.

Solidification behavior of the theta system 2-propanol/poly(n-butyl methacrylate)

1995

Thermoreversible gelation of the system 2-propanol/poly (n-butyl methacrylate) — as detected by D'SC or dielectric experiments — does not manifest itself in a straightforward manner in the dynamic-mechanical properties. Its occurrence can, however, be seen in many ways: i) For constant composition of the system and a reference temperature lower than Tgel, the storage modulus G′ is larger than the loss modulus G″ in the glass transition zone of the master curve and both vary in an almost parallel manner with the angular frequency ω over almost two decades (whereas this feature is normally found for other gelling systems within the rubber plateau or the flow region). ii) The entanglement mole…

A simple algorithm for drawing large graphs on small screens

1995

Viewing a large graph in limited display space has traditionally been accomplished using either reduced scale rendering of the graph or by attaching scrollbars to a view window which shows only a small portion of the entire graph. Recent work, however, has concentrated on integrating a locally detailed view with a globally scaled view. We present an algorithm for constructing a view which smoothly integrates local detail and global context in a single view window and describe user interaction with such a display.

Origin of peak asymmetry and the effect of temperature on solute retention in enantiomer separations on imprinted chiral stationary phases

1995

Abstract In enantiomer separations of d - and l -phenylalanine anlilide ( d,l -PA) on l -PA-imprinted chiral stationary phases (CSPs), the use of an aqueous buffer-organic solvent mixture as mobile phase resulted in improved column efficiency compared with what has previously been observed using mobile phases containing acetic acid as modifier. The dependence of the chromatographic parameters on flow-rate and sample load was studied. A strong dependence of the asymmetry factor ( A s ) of the l -form on sample load and a weak dependence on flow-rate indicate that the non-linear adsorption isotherm is the main reason for the broad peaks observed in this system. Depending on the method used fo…

Study of prompt photon production in hadronic Z° decays.

1995

From a sample of 1.5 million Z0 ! qq decays collected by the DELPHI detector during 1991, 1992 and 1993, the production cross section for isolated nal state photons is measured and is compared with the O( ; s) matrix element calculations implemented in the EEPRAD and GNJETS Monte Carlo generators. The observed photon yield is used to derive the electroweak couplings of charge 2/3 (u-type) and charge 1/3 (d-type) quarks to the Z0 boson. The measured values c2=3 = 0:91+0:25 0:36 and c1=3 = 1:62+0:24 0:17 are compatible with the Standard Model prediction, c2=3 = 1:145 and c1=3 = 1:477.

Toluene self-diffusion in solutions of linear and crosslinked polystyrene

1995

Toluene self-diffusion coefficients in solutions of linear and crosslinked polystyrene (PS) at concentrations up to 30 wt% polymer have been determined over the temperature range 143–230 K using the1H n.m.r. static gradient stimulated echo method. At similar polymer concentrations, the diffusion coefficient values of toluene were higher for mixtures with crosslinked PS than for solutions containing linear PS. On cooling and approaching the solution glass transition, the amplitude decays in diffusion and spin-relaxation measurements become non-exponential and are interpreted in terms of a two-component decomposition. The estimated fraction of the toluene motionally bound to polymer increases…

Metrics in method engineering

1995

So many software development methods have been introduced in the last decade, that one can talk about a “methodology jungle”. To aid the method developers and evaluators in fighting their way through this jungle we propose a systematic approach for measuring properties of methods. We describe two sets of metrics, which measure the complexity of diagrammatic specification techniques on the one hand, and of complete systems development methods on the other hand. Proposed metrics provide a relatively fast and simple way to analyse the technique (or method) properties, and when accompanied with other selection criteria, can be used for estimating the cost of learning the technique and the relat…
