Recent studies have presented evidence that the processes of hypoxaemia and reperfusion are involved in several pathogenetic mechanisms of atherosclerotic lesions. The ability of hypoxaemia to activate circulating white blood cells (WBCs) and enhance WBC-endothelial cell (EC) interactions is suspected to be a major factor in deleterious processes in the blood vessel wall. Various groups have suggested that cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), such as ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and E-selectin and their leukocyte ligands are involved in intercellular activities of the relevant cell types. Herida antebraquial infectada por Aeromonas hydrophila

Se presenta un caso de celulitis por Aeromonas hydrophila, en un paciente de 23 años, tras una herida antebraquial producida en el medio acuático. La celulitis se resolvió mediante desbridamiento agresivo y quimioterapia. En los controles posteriores no se han apreciado déficits funcionales tras la infección. A case of Aeromonas hidrophila cellulitis developped in a 23-year-old patient, after aquatic environment forearm wound is presented. His cellulitis was effectively resolved with aggressive debridement and chemotherapy. Follow-up examinations have shown no residual functional deficits from the infection.

Polarized Structure Functions and the Nucleon Spin

The link between the light-cone momentum distributions of constituent quark models and their corresponding parton distributions is used to study the polarized structure functions g 1 of proton and neutron. The formalism allows to analyze the effects of the structure of the quark model wave function and thus we discuss the SU (6) breaking mechanism associated with the One Gluon Exchange and large D-state admixtures originated in pionic models. We analyze the contribution to these structure functions of the gluon polarization arising from the anomaly.

A new species of Strunius(Sarcopterygii; Onychodontida) from Latvia; Lode quarry (Upper Devonian)

Abstract A new species of the genus Strunius has been found. It is distinct from the other Strunius species; S. rolandi and S. walteri in the shape of the gular and parasymphysial teeth. The sigmoid tooth tips are harpoon-shaped and are similar to those of Onychodus jaekeli. Strunius nov. sp. is more closely related to S. rolandi than to the type-species S. walteri.

The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluvoxamine interferes with the metabolism of tricyclic antidepressants. The present investigation was set out to characterize these interactions in vitro using rat liver microsomes and in vivo by analysing levels of clomipramine and metabolites in sera of depressed patients treated concomitantly with fluvoxamine and clomipramine. Clomipramine was N-demethylated and hydroxylated in vitro by microsomes to N-desmethyl-clomipramine, 8-hydroxyclomipramine, and 10-hydroxyclomipramine. To know how to die. An Aanthropology of Death and narratives on psycopaths

This essay aims to examine the representation of death in the films of psychopaths as a way of sheding some light on the anthropology of death. Seriality does not only means the way murders appear on screen, but also the structure of the narratives in its relation to ending. In this sense, our narratives seems to become increasingly unable to conclude. Serial films such as Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, among others, through their repetitions and blindspots shed some light on how westerners approach death at the end of the 20th century.

Deuteron Compton Scattering

We have calculated deuteron Compton scattering below pion production threshold using different realistic NN potential models and explicit meson exchange current contributions. The gauge conditions for the current and two photon operators have been exploited extensively, so that our model fulfills the low energy theorems. Rescattering, meson exchange and nucleon substructure contributions are studied and compared with a previous calculation and recent experimental data.

KAM Techniques for Time Dependent Quantum Systems

We consider a spin 1/2 in constant magnetic field perturbed by a quasiperiodic time dependent magnetic field. We discuss its stability properties in terms of the spectrum of the corresponding quasienergy operator. Since the spectrum of the unperturbed problem is dense, there appear small denominators in the perturbation theory, corresponding to resonances. They are treated with a technique developped by L.H. Eliasson, based on a KAM iteration.

Is the standard, parity-non-conserving, nucleon-nucleus interaction a surface one?

Abstract Claims that the standard single-particle, parity-non-conserving, nucleon-nucleus interaction, V pnc = ct · 1 2 { σ · p , ϱ(r)} , is a surface one are considered. It is shown that examination of integrands entering some quantity involving Vpnc leads to quite puzzling results. These are further supported by a similar examination for a term [ σ · p , ϱ(r) ] which is odd under time-reversal, but has a priori a well-defined surface character. Alternative approaches to determine whether Vpnc is a surface or volume interaction are developed, based on using wave functions as test functions. From these approaches, the volume character of Vpnc is unambiguous.

En trabajos recientes de investigacion en didactica de las ciencias se insiste en la necesidad de introducir las relaciones Ciencia, Tecnologia y Sociedad (CTS) en la ensenanza de las ciencias. En este articulo se constata que en nuestro pais dichas relaciones estan practicamente ausentes en los libros de texto cientificos. Esto contribuye a que los estudiantes tengan una imagen de la ciencia alejada del mundo real, poco relacionada con el desarrollo tecnologico y sus consecuencias en el medio ambiente y la sociedad. Por otra parte, se observan diferencias en el interes de los estudiantes hacia la Fisica y Quimica y la Biologia y Geologia.

First carboniferous conulariids from Niger (west Africa)

Abstract Two new conulariid species, Paraconularia feldmanni sp. nov. and P. sahara sp. nov., are described from the Lower Carboniferous (Visean) Talak Formation of northern Niger. These are the first example of the genus Paraconularia to be reported from Africa and the first Carboniferous conulariids from that continent to be assigned to species level. Previously reported Carboniferous conulariids from Africa were collected from Morocco, assigned to other genera, and left in open nomenclature. Paraconularia is interpreted to have been cosmopolitan by the Early Carboniferous, and is the dominant genus in most assemblages of Carboniferous conulariids.

Shell structure and shape coexistence in195Pb

Pb-195 was investigated utilizing the reactions Dy-164(S-36, 5n)Pb-195 and Dy-164(S-34, 3n)Pb-195 at beam energies of 170 and 160MeV respectively. Two new dipole bands which feed into the yrast 25/2(+) state, were found in Pb-195. The connection between the bands and the spherical states was established and thus spins and energies of the involved collective states were determined. The deformation is understood as mainly due to excitations of protons across the Z = 82 shell gap. The observed backbends are interpreted as alignment of i(13/2) neutrons.

Tema favorito de la pintura valenciana entre 1490-1560, la iconografía de la Primera Aparición de Cristo resucitado acompañado de los Padres del Limbo, remite a una modalidad devocional de inspiración franciscana en torno a aspectos concretos de la humanidad de Cristo. En su concepción pictórica, pudo haber influído decisívamente la Vita Christi de Sor Isabel de Villena, inspirada contribución de la literatura vernácula de fines del siglo XV, coincidente con el primer ejemplo conocido de tan interesante tema iconográfico.
