The Sicilian (Crocidura sicula) and the Canary (C. canariensis) shrew (Mammalia, Soricidae): Peripheral isolate formation and geographic variation

1995

Abstract The skull and mandible morphometrics of two insular and endemic taxa (C. sicula and C. canariensis) from the Sicilian and Canary archipelagos, both having exactly the same karyotype were analysed by principal component and canonical variate analyses and related multivariate techniques. Information available in the literature was also employed to obtain a better approach to the systematics relationships in this taxon. Specimens of C. suaveolens, C. leucodon, C. whitakeri and C. russula from the Mediterranean, and C. esuae from the Pleistocene of Spinagallo (Sicily) were used as references. The results of multivariate analyses of the metric and non‐metric characters of the skull and …

Rejoinder to Chambers' Comments

1995

Anisotropic motion of toluene above and below the glass transition studied by 2H NMR

1995

Abstract 2 H nuclear magnetic resonance spin-lattice relaxation experiments on two selectively deuterated toluene molecules have been performed over a wide temperature range, spanning liquid and glassy states, to examine anisotropic molecular dynamics. In the liquid regime, the relaxation data are analyzed by the model of anisotropic rotational diffusion. A more phenomenological ansatz is used for the whole temperature regime to obtain information about anisotropic reorientation and its temperature dependence. We find that the anisotropy is reduced in the supercooled state and the motion becomes approximately isotropic below 140 K which is interpreted as the onset of cooperative reorientati…

Personality patterns in subjects at risk for affective disorders.

1995

The main conclusions of this study on the familial links between personality patterns and affective disorders are: (1) The personality features with the greatest degree of symptomatic overlap with unipolar depression were more common among the first-degree relatives of probands with this diagnosis: thus dysthymic temperament and neuroticism are enhanced in this group of relatives compared to controls. Likewise personality features with a high degree of symptomatic overlap with bipolar affective disorder were more common among the first-degree relatives of probands with this diagnosis. Thus levels of dysthymic and cyclothymic temperament were elevated in this group of relatives compared to c…

In vitro analysis of the phenotypical and functional properties of the 4F7+ cutaneous accessory dendritic cell

1995

The monoclonal antibody 4F7 detects a molecule on dermal and epidermal Ia+ dendritic cells (DCs), and some of these cells are Birbeck granule-containing cells. Here we report on the phenotypical and functional characteristics of these cells which were highly enriched by 4F7-labelled immunomagnetic beads. The ultrastructural, immunocytochemical and cytochemical analyses of these preparations showed cells with the typical characteristics of DCs. The cells were found to express the DC marker NLDC145, but not 33D1. The C3bi receptor and marker F4/80 were only expressed by epidermal 4F7+ cells. The capacity of freshly isolated 4F7+ epidermal and dermal DCs to activate allogeneic T cells in a mix…

Experimente zur Entwicklung eines implantierbaren und dauernd funktionsfähigen Glukose-Sensors auf Basis der Polarimetrie - Experiments Aimed at Enab…

1995

In vitro and in vivo experiments devised with the aim of developing a permanently implantable glucose sensor based on polarimetry are described. It was found that in ultrafiltrated human blood plasma the overall optical rotation was 94% specific for glucose, and that polarisation photometry yielded a sufficiently sensitive signal for in vivo glucose detection. The three types of capillary membrane intended for implantation that we tested, revealed an in vitro response time to glucose concentration of 10 minutes; when implanted, they maintain this over a period of weeks, during which time the same glucose concentrations can be measured daily in ultrafiltrated capillary fluid as in the blood …

Primordial Heavy Element Production

1995

A number of possible mechanisms have been suggested to generate density in-homogeneities in the early Universe which could survive until the onset of primordial nucleosynthesis (Malaney and Mathews 1993). In this work we are not concerned with how the inhomogeneities were generated but we want to focus on the effect of such inhomogeneities on primordial nucleosynthesis. One of the proposed signatures of inhomogeneity, the synthesis of very heavy elements by neutron capture, was analyzed for varying baryon to photon ratios n and length scales L. A detailed discussion is published in (Rauscher et al. 1994b). Preliminary results can be found in (Thielemann et al. 1991; Rauscher et al. 1994a).

The forward-backward asymmetry for charm quarks at the Z pole

1995

From 1.4 million hadronic Z decays collected by the ALEPH detector at LEP, an enriched sample of Z --> c $$($) over bar c events is extracted by requiring the presence of a high momentum D*(+/-). The charm quark forward-backward charge asymmetry at the Z pole is measured to be A(FB)(0,c) = (8.0 +/- 2.4)% corresponding to an effective electroweak mixing angle of sin(2) theta(W)(eff) = 0.2302 +/- 0.0054.

Mnemosyne-Lesmosyne. Memoria e oblio, mito e storia

1995

The focus of this paper concerns the role of myth and oblivion in the 20th century in the thought of Karl Kerényi: the political use of myth and its ideological manipulation. The reflection is developed through the examination of a neglected essay (Mnemosyne-Lesmosyne), written in 1945 and linked to the correspondence with Thomas Mann.

Determination of ascorbic acid in asparagus by differential pulse polarography

1995

A useful method for the determination of ascorbic acid in a vegetable product (asparagus) by differential pulse polarography has been set up and evaluated. Extraction and instrumental conditions were optimized. The analytical parameters are: linearity (0–18.18 μg/ml); detection limit (0.182 μg/ml); instrumental and method precision (2.77% and 4%, respectively); accuracy (96.9–113.4%). These data show that the method is sufficiently sensitive, reliable and accurate. It was also compared with the official fluorometric AOAC method.

Adsorption of di-and triblock copolymers with functionalized butadiene-styrene blocks from dilute solution

1995

Abstract The adsorption behaviour of functionalized polystyrene-block-polybutadiene diblock copolymers, P(S-b-B), and polybutadiene-block-polystyrene-block-polybutadiene triblock copolymers, P(B-b-S-b-B), from dilute solutions in toluene onto silicon wafers was investigated by means of null-ellipsometry. Polar 4-(3,5-dioxo- 1,2,4-triazolidin-4-yl) benzoic acid groups (urazole groups) were attached randomly to the butadiene blocks. The PS blocks and the PB blocks adsorb not on the substrate surface, but only on the polar functional groups. It was verified that the adsorbed amount does not depend on the number of functional groups nor on the degree of polymerization of the polybutadiene block…

Mono-, bi- and polynuclear complexes of diphenylmethane with Cr, Co and Ru. Synthesis and investigation by 1H, 13C and 17O NMR

1995

Abstract Complexes of diphenylmethane (Ph 2 CH 2 ): Ph 2 CH 2 Cr(CO) 3 ( 1 ), Ph 2 CH 2 [Cr(CO) 3 ] 2 ( 2 ), Ph 2 CH 2 Co 4 (CO) 9 ( 3 ), Ph 2 CH 2 [Co 4 (CO) 9 ] 2 ( 4 ), Ph 2 CH 2 Cr(CO) 3 Co 4 (CO) 9 ( 5 ) and Ph 2 CH 2 Ru 6 C(CO) 14 ( 6 ) have been prepared and characterized by 1 H and 13 C-and 17 O-NMR spectroscopy. Strong shielding effects are caused by the metal valence electrons on the 1 H- and 13 C-NMR chemical shifts of aromatic protons and carbons in π-coordinated ring(s) diphenylmethane. Generally, the order of these shielding effects on the nuclei of the aromatic rings in 1 H-NMR was Co 4 (CO) 9 6 C(CO) 14 3 and in 13 C-NMR Co 4 (CO) 9 3 6 C(CO) 14 . In addition, aromatic solve…

Investigation of eutectic transformation of Zn−Al alloy by DTA

1995

The paper discusses the investigation of crystallization of metals and alloys by differential thermal analysis (DTA). It was assumed that this method allows determination of the mechanism and kinetics of volumetric crystallization underiso conditions (e.g. anisothermal) on the basis of the parameters of the equation expressing an integral form of the DTA curve. From DTA, a course of eutectic transformation was determined for a technical Zn−Al alloy containing 4wt% Al. Investigations were carried out under continuous cooling at various rates and the kinetics parameters were determined with the KEKAM equation:-ln(1-x)=kln

Microtubules and the Establishment of Apparent Cell Wall Invaginations in Mesophyll Cells of Pinus silvestris L.

1995

Summary Ridges of cell wall material protruding into the cellular lumen are characteristic of Pinus silvestris mesophyll cells. These ridges, e.g., appear to increase the inner surface for optimal dispersal of organelles, especially of chloroplasts. We show that the ridges are the result of local, brace-like wall reinforcements deposited during early turgor-driven expansion growth of postmitotic cells. The reinforced sites resist expansion and become the base of deep, narrow folds representing the ridges, while the intervening thin-walled areas evaginate as the cell volume increases. Cell wall material is deposited uniformly after expansion to stabilize the protrusions. There is a distinct …

Three-dimensional ultrasonography in prenatal diagnosis

1995

Within the past five years, 3D ultrasonography has developed to the degree that it offers both the patient and the examiner an entirely new visual experience in prenatal diagnosis. With the system described here (Kretz-technik, Austria), any desired plane can be displayed within the stored volume, and within seconds a high-quality 3D surface or transparent image can be calculated and displayed on the ultrasound monitor without need for an external workstation. All of this can be performed routinely in the clinical setting. Since 1989 we have routinely examined a total of 458 fetuses (242 normal and 216 with anomalies) between 16 and 38 weeks of gestation, supplementing our conventional 2D u…

Enterobacterial Antigens with Tropism for Joint Structures and HLA-B27=Restricted Cytotoxic T-Cells in Reactive Arthritis

1995

In reactive arthritis (ReA), sterile synovitis is an immunological sequela following gastrointestinal or urogenital infection with facultatively intracellular bacteria (Yersinia, Salmonella, Shigella, Chlamydia). It is widely accepted now that the development of arthritis is closely related to the persistance of bacteria or bacterial antigens in extraarticular mucosal or lymphoid tissues (i.e. gut mucosa, gut associated lymphoid tissue, genitourinary mucosa); however, it is still unclear which host mechanisms are responsible for the poorer elimination of arthritis-causing microorganisms in those ReA patients. Bacterial components are also camed to the joints where they can be demonstrated i…

Towards a Unified Description of the Baryon Spectrum and the Baryon-Baryon Interaction within a Potential Model Scheme

1995

We study the low energy part of the nucleon and ∆ spectra by solving the Schrodinger equation for the three-quark system in the hyperspherical harmonic approach. The quark-quark hamiltonian considered includes, besides the usual one-gluon exchange, pion and sigma exchanges generated by the chiral symmetry breaking This quark-quark potential reproduces, in a Resonating Group Method calculation, the nucleon-nucleon scattering phase shifts and the deuteron properties. The baryonic spectrum obtained is quite reasonable and the resulting wave function is consistent with the ansatz used in the two baryon system.

Elastic-Viscoplastic Solids Subjected to Thermal and Loading Cycles

1995

— A class of elastic-viscoplastic materials with dual internal variables, thermodynamic potential and temperature-dependent plastic and creep data is considered. For solids (or structures) of such materials, subjected to cyclic loads and temperature variations, the existence of a steady-state response is ascertained and its periodicity characteristics established. Particular steady-state responses, like, elastic and inelastic shakedown, are addressed. By means of a sensitivity analysis of the steady cycle with respect to the load parameter changes, a number of basic features of inelastic shakedown (the viscoplastic counterpart of plastic shakedown) are also addressed.

An Example: Money

1995

The institution of money, like that of language, or that of the State, has often been seen to be based on some kind of contractual agreement. Aristotle describes the nature of money as follows: Money has become by convention a sort of representative of demand; and that is why it has the name ‘money’ (nomisma) because it exists not by nature but by law (nomos) and it is in our power to change it and make it useless. (Ethica Nicomachea, V.5.II33a) The word nomos is ambiguous: in another translation of Ethica it has been translated as “custom”. This ambiguity reflects a theoretical problem in the classical social theory: money has been seen either as a result of an act of will of the legislato…

Rheological and metabolic leucocyte determinants in diabetes mellitus

1995

In diabetics of type I and 2 we examined, in resting white blood cells (WBC), the filtration parameters (Initial Relative Flow Rate - lRFR, Clogging Rate - CR) employing the St. George Filtrometer, the polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) membrane fluidity, the PMN cytosolic Ca2+ content and the PMN membrane cholesterol/phospholipid ratio (C/PL). From the obtained data, it is evident that, while the lRFR of unfractionated WBC distinguishes normals from diabetics of type 1 and 2, the fIltration parameters of the PMN and mononuclear cells (MN) do not show any significant difference. PMN membrane fluidity, PMN cytosolic Ca2+ content and PMN C/PL do not discriminate normals from diabetics of type 1 an…

Identification of two novel polymorphisms and a rare deletion variant in the human dopamine D4 receptor gene

1995

We report two novel polymorphisms and a rare deletion variant in the human dopaine D4 receptor gene. The two polymorphisms are characterized by single base pair substitutions, namely a G-->C transversion changing codon 11 from GGG (encoding Gly) to CGG (encoding Arg) and a C-->T transition in position -11 upstream from the start codon. The Arg11 variant occurs at a frequency of about 1% and the C-->T transition at a frequency of about 7% in German control subjects (n = 148). Allele frequencies observed in patients suffering from schizophrenia (n = 256) and bipolar affective disorder (n = 99) were similar. The deletion variant is characterized by a 21 bp deletion affecting codons 36 to 42 co…

N-p-Amino- and N-p-nitro-phenylsulfonyl derivatives of dipeptides, a new family of ligands for copper(II). Potentiometric and spectroscopic studies

1995

The co-ordination ability of four dipeptide analogues substituted on the N-terminal amino group with p-nitrophenylsulfonyl (nps-Ala-Ala and nps-Ala-His) and p-aminophenylsulfonyl (aps-Ala-Ala and aps-Ala-His) groups was studied by potentiometric and spectroscopic (UV/VIS absorption, CD and EPR) techniques. The N-terminal sulfonyl substituent drastically changes the acidity of the sulfonamide proton making nitrogen very efficient in binding to CuII. The sulfonamide nitrogen having pK between 9 and 11 does not need any anchoring binding group to form complexes with CuII. The para substituent on the phenyl ring (amino or nitro) influences very strongly the acidity of the sulfonamide proton. Th…
