Mental Contents in a World of Causes
1995
A fundamental issue in cognitive science is whether mental contents are causally efficacious and, therefore, should be preserved in scientific psychology. In this paper, we pursue some aspects of this issue by examining Fred Dretske's recent contributions to it. He defends the causal efficacy of mental content *qua* mental content, but imposes an important constraint: mental contents can operate as structuring, but not as triggering causes. We shall argue, by contrast, that mental contents can also intervene as triggering causes.
Development of Rat DC by in Vitro Culture of Bone Marrow Cells
1995
Dendritic cells (DC) represent a subpopulation of leukocytes of bone marrow (BM) origin, involved in crucial immunological reactions. DC play a fundamental role in the primary immune response by stimulating quiescent T cells. In this study we describe an in vitro culture system to raise DC from unfractionated bone marrow (BM) cells of LEWIS rats in the presence of low doses of mouse recombinant GM-CSF, that was successfully used in previous work to culture mouse DC1,2,3.
The Shaping of Flux Density at the Air Gap of Small DC Motors with Different Permanent-Magnet Poles
1995
Design, operation and reliability of permanent-magnet DC micromotors are highly dependent of the magnet employed, i.e. of its demagnetization curve, type of magnetization (either radial or tangential), size and position within the micromotor as well as of its shape.
A Pragmatic Classification of LSP Texts in Science and Technology1
1995
Abstract: Theoretical approaches towards a classification of texts and empirical analyses of individual text types have been pursued more or less independently of each other. Without reference to a common theoretical framework, the results obtained when analysing individual texts cannot be compared — making it impossible to relate the individual text types to each other, and thus determine the scope of validity of the features which turn out to be characteristic of a group of texts. For this reason, an approach towards a pragmatic text typology is presented which can serve as a framework for the analysis of various LSP text types. In the last part of the paper some implications of this typo…

Parasites as Indicators of Water Quality and the Potential Use of Helminth Transmission in Marine Pollution Studies
1995
Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on parasites as indicators of water quality and the potential use of helminth transmission in marine pollution studies. There are good reasons for focusing on parasitic organisms in general and helminth parasites in particular, in the search for highly sensitive indicators. First, there are more parasitic than free-living species. Second, helminth parasites have complex life cycles and the different developmental stages have widely differing requirements, therefore, each stage must be assessed separately for sensitivity to environmental change, thereby widening the choice of potential indicators. Many biotic and abiotic factors affect the numbers and d…
Chronic constipation as a symptom of cow milk allergy
1995
Twenty-seven consecutive infants (mean age, 20.6 months) with chronic "idiopathic" constipation were studied to investigate the possible relation between constipation and cow milk protein allergy (CMPA). The infants were initially observed on an unrestricted diet, and the number of stools per day was recorded. Subsequently the infants were put on a diet free of cow milk protein (CMP) for two periods of 1 month each, separated by two challenges with CMP. During the CMP-free diet, there was a resolution of symptoms in 21 patients; during the two consecutive challenges, constipation reappeared within 48 to 72 hours. In another six patients the CMP-free diet did not lead to improvement of const…

Morphometrics of the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus, Mammalia, Rodentia) in the Mediterranean
1995
Abstract Sexual dimorphism, ontogenetic variation and allometric shape changes related to variation in size were considered and eliminated before performing discriminant analyses on geographic variation of Apodemus sylvaticus in central Mediterranean areas. Preliminary multivariate analyses of A. sylvaticus populations showed influences of sex and age in the ordination results. Giantism, i.e. size increase and shape‐related change, was more pronounced on islands like Pantelleria and Marettimo. By principal component analysis, we found an allometric factor which proved statistically correlated to insularity parameters (area, distance from mainland, and altitude) but not to the number of pred…
Determination of the mobility edge in the Anderson model of localization in three dimensions by multifractal analysis.
1995
We study the Anderson model of localization in three dimensions with different probability distributions for the site energies. Using the Lanczos algorithm we calculate eigenvectors for different model parameters like disorder and energy. From these we derive the singularity spectrum typically used for the characterization of multifractal objects. We demonstrate that the singularity spectrum at the critical disorder, which determines the mobility edge at the band center, is independent of the employed probability distribution. Assuming that this singularity spectrum is universal for the metal-insulator transition regardless of specific parameters of the model we establish a straightforward …

Left ventricular volume determination using colour superpositioning of contrast echocardiograms
1995
Abstract Objective: To delineate the endocardium, selective colouring of contrast regions in left ventricular contrast echocardiograms was performed using digital image processing. Methods: Volume determinations were performed in end-diastolic and end-systolic frames before and after the injection of contrast agent into the left ventricle and were compared to cineventriculograms in 30 patients by two independent investigators. Results: The mean end-diastolic volume measured was 114 ± 44 ml in the native, 235 ± 79 ml in the contrast, 175 ± 70 ml in the color-superimposed (observer 1), and 187 ± 79 ml in the cineventriculographic images. Thus, native echocardiograms underestimated angiographi…
Color discrimination under mesopic conditions in cats and humans
1995
The ability to discriminate colors under various levels of mesopic illumination was studied in three cats using colored papers as stimuli and with a computer controlled training schedule. Discrimination based on brightness differences was prevented using a new method in which illuminant color was varied. The luminance threshold for color discrimination in cats was found to be 0.5 cd/m2, close to the cone threshold reported by others from ganglion cell recordings. The same experiment was carried out with human subjects and revealed a luminance threshold of 0.00042 cd/m2 for color discrimination.
Substrate determinants for cleavage in cis and in trans by the hepatitis C virus NS3 proteinase
1995
Processing of the hepatitis C virus polyprotein is accomplished by a series of cotranslational and posttranslational cleavages mediated by host cell signalases and two virally encoded proteinases. Of these the NS3 proteinase is essential for processing at the NS3/4A, NS4A/4B, NS4B/5A, and NS5A/5B junctions. Processing between NS3 and NS4A occurs in cis, implying an intramolecular reaction mechanism, whereas cleavage at the other sites can also be mediated in trans. Sequence analysis of the amino termini of mature cleavage products and comparisons of amino acid residues around the scissile bonds of various hepatitis C virus isolates identified amino acid residues which might contribute to su…

Linear Types for Higher Order Processes with First Class Directed Channels
1995
Abstract We present a small programming language for distributed systems based on message passing processes. In contrast to similar languages, channels are one-to-one connections between a unique sender and a unique receiver process. Process definitions and channels are first class values and the topology of process systems can change dynamically. The operational semantics of the language is defined by means of graph rewriting rules. A static type system based on the notion of linear types ensures that channels are always used as one-to-one connections.
Mechanical step variability during treadmill running.
1995
The present study was designed to study intra-individual step variability measured both on vertical displacement of the body (delta Z) and on step time (delta t) parameters by means of a kinematic arm and during treadmill running. A group of 17 subjects ran successively at 60%, 80%, 100% and 140% of their maximal aerobic velocity (Vamax). The total number of steps analysed was 6116. The absolute delta Z step variability (sigma delta Z) ranged between 5 mm and 21 mm while the absolute delta t variability (sigma delta t) ranged between 6 ms and 40 ms. Step variabilities were due to step asymmetry (from 38.5% to 48.5% of the step variability) and to stride variability. For submaximal velocitie…
Quark exchange in deep inelastic scattering
1995
We use a model for baryons that links the constituent structure to the deep inelastic (current) properties. The approach consists in a laboratory partonic description (based on a model of hadron structure), to which a low momentum scaleQ 0 is adscribed, which is evolved to high momenta by means of the renormalization group. A generalization of the model by means of the hadronic quark cluster decomposition, provides a description of the structure functions of nuclei and is the starting point to study the effects that the antisymmetrization at the quark level has on the structure function of a model deuteron. The analysis contains conventional and high momentum partonic components. We next st…
Strange baryon production in Z hadronic decays
1995
A study of the production of strange octet and decuplet baryons in hadronic decays of the Z recorded by the DELPHI detector at LEP is presented. This includes the first measurement of the ∑± average multiplicity. The total and differential cross sections, the event topology and the baryon-antibaryon correlations are compared with current hadronization models. © 1995 Springer-Verlag.

A Study of radiactive muon-pair events at Z° energies and limits on an additional Z' gauge boson
1995
An analysis is reported on the channele + e −→μ+μ−(nγ), n=1,2..., using data taken with the DELPHI detector at LEP from 1990 to 1992. Differential cross sections of the radiative photons as a function of photon energy and of the angle between the photon and the muon are presented. No significant deviations from expectations are observed. The data are also used to extract the muon-pair cross section and asymmetry below the Z0 peak by using those events with relatively hard initial state radiative photon(s). The measured cross section and asymmetry show no significant deviation from the Standard Model expectations. These results together with the DELPHI cross section and asymmetry measurement…
An Economic Approach of Higher Education in Brazil
1995
International audience; Higher education in Latin America is considered by many to be in a state of crisis. In Brazil this is certainly the case. In the press and regularly in meetings and discussions in Brazil there is a growing debate about whether public education is excessively costly, inequitable, and inefficient, about the proper role of private institutions, and overall on how the system should change to meet the challenges of the 21st century. A major problem in this debate is a lack of real data and information on the issues under discussion. The purpose of this paper is to provide better information on these points of debate. Specitically, this paper seeks to answer the following …
Numerical Taxonomy of Aeromonadaceae and Vibrionaceae associated with Reared Fish and Surrounding Fresh and Brackish Water
1995
Summary A numerical taxonomic study was performed on 51 isolates of gram-negative, oxidase-positive, rodshaped, heterotrophic, facultative anaerobic bacteria isolated from aquatic samples (fresh and brackish water, eels, turbot and rainbow trout). These bacteria were compared with 28 type and references strains which included most of Aeromonas phenospecies and DNA hybridization groups, as well as strains of some arginine-positive vibrios and Plesiomonas shigelloides . The strains were characterized by 137 morphological, biochemical, physiological and nutritional tests, and data were examined by simple matching (S SM ) and Jaccard (S J ) coefficients. Unweigthed pair group mathematical avera…
A model for the γN → ππN reaction
1995
We have studied the γN→ππN reaction using a model which includes N, Δ(1232), N*(1440) and N*(1520) intermediate baryonic states and the ρ-meson as intermediate ππ resonance. The model reproduces fairly well experimental cross sections below E γ = 800 MeV and invariant-mass distributions even at higher energies. One of the interesting findings of the study is that the γ N →N*(1520) → Δπ process is very important and interferes strongly with the dominant Δ-Kroll-Ruderman term to produce the experimental peak of the cross section.
