Study of short-lived tin isotopes with a laser ion source

1995

A chemically selective laser ion source based on resonance ionization of atoms in a hot cavity has been applied for the study of short-lived silver isotopes at CERN/ ISOLDE. Silver atoms were ionized by two resonant excitations and final laser ionization into the continuum. Decay properties of the neutron-rich isotopes121–127Ag were studied with a neutron long-counter and aβ-detector.

Line Coupling Effects in Anisotropic Raman Q-Branches of the ν1/2ν2 Fermi Dyad in CO2

1995

0021-9606; The generalized energy corrected sudden model is used to calculate the Q branch of the anisotropic coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectra corresponding to the v1 and 2v2 transitions of the Fermi dyad of CO2. The corresponding experimental spectra have been recorded for pressures leading to a consistent overlapping between the rotational components. This leads to a new experimental evaluation of the relaxation time of the second-order tensor associated with the rotational angular momentum. The value is in excellent agreement with that already obtained from the study of the infrared absorption Q branch, the Rayleigh scattering, and the viscomagnetic effect. (C) 1995 American…

RNA viruses: a bridge between life and artificial life

1995

RNA viruses can be an adequate bridge between life and artificial life. Under experimental conditions the parameters that in last instance are responsible for the evolution of replicons resembling primitive life forms can be easily studied. One year of a RNA virus evolving may be equivalent to one million years of an evolving DNA-based entity. High mutation rates as well as very short life cycles permit the capability of observing evolutionary effects in the lifetime of a human observer. Another important feature of RNA viruses, functionally related to its mutation rate, is the genome length, which ranges between 3 and 30 Kb, probably the shortest lengths with the highest estimated mutation…

Influence of hydrogen bonding on the viscoelastic properties of thermoreversible networks: analysis of the local complex dynamics

1995

Abstract The viscoelastic properties of thermoreversible polybutadiene networks in which junctions are formed by binary contacts between polar stickers (phenylurazole) are investigated by a dynamic mechanical spectroscopy within the frequency range 0.0079–79.5 Hz (0.05–500 rads−1). Time-temperature superposition is applicable in the terminal flow region and the glass transition regime, whereas thermorheologically complex behaviour is observed within the rubbery plateau region. For the terminal relaxation zone the polar stickers enhance the relaxation time and broaden the relaxation time spectrum. The thermorheologically complex behaviour within the rubbery plateau region results from the oc…

Phase Transitions in Polymeric Systems

1995

The study of collective phenomena in polymeric systems is a particular challenge, because there occurs structure simultaneously on many length scales. Restricting attention to neutral flexible linear macromolecules, we disregard here interesting problems like polyelectrolytes, stiff chains or chains with stiff parts, branched chains and polymer networks, and all combinations thereof including e.g. liquid crystalline polymers, and treat only the simplest case. But already then there occurs structure from the scale of a covalent bond along the backbone of a chain (~ 1 A) over the scale of the persistence length (~ 10 A) to the coil gyration radius R g (~ 102 A), in the description of a single …

Classification of Renal Cell Carcinoma Based on Morphologic and Cytogenetic Correlations

1995

Typing or classification of renal cell carcinomas — a term introduced by Murphy and Mostofi in 1965 (1) — has been a debatable field since Grawitz (2) introduced the term hypernephroma in 1883. Grawitz postulated a hypernephrogenic origin of renal cancers, whose cells exhibit a light cytoplasm. During recent decades it has become customary to view renal cell carcinoma as a complex entity. Despite support for this idea by the World Health Organization (3) a morphological subtyping of renal cell carcinoma has not been recognized until recently. In 1986 Thoenes et al. (4) proposed a new pathomorphological subtyping of epithelial renal cell tumors, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and adenoma (RCA), …

Autoestima y depresión: relaciones directas versus indirectas

1995

Gd-DTPA in blood-ocular barrier damage: a new diagnostic tool for future application in MRI?

1995

The blood-brain barrier is not the only neuroepithelial blood filter in the body: the eye too is supported by a highly specialised microvascular filter, the so-called blood-ocular barrier (BOB). The BOB is actually divided into a blood-aqueous (BAB) and a blood-retinal (BRB) barrier, filtering the aqueous fluid and biological supplies, respectively, to the retina. The authors’ purpose was to study the possibility of imaging BAB or BRB damage by contrast-enhanced MRI: they examined 21 patients with a 0.5 T system and surface coil. Despite the normal findings in the damaged eyes immediately after a Gd-DTPA bolus, delayed contrast-enhanced MRI was able to show focal or diffuse barrier damage.

Kolmogorov numberings and minimal identification

1995

Identification of programs for computable functions from their graphs by algorithmic devices is a well studied problem in learning theory. Freivalds and Chen consider identification of ‘minimal’ and ‘nearly minimal’ programs for functions from their graphs. To address certain problems in minimal identification for Godel numberings, Freivalds later considered minimal identification in Kolmogorov Numberings. Kolmogorov numberings are in some sense optimal numberings and have some nice properties. We prove certain hierarchy results for minimal identification in every Kolmogorov numbering. In addition we also compare minimal identification in Godel numbering versus minimal identification in Kol…

A computational study of several heuristics for the DRPP

1995

The problem of designing a route of minimum length for a postman that starts and finishes at his office and has to deliver the mail along a set of streets in a city is known as the Rural Postman Problem. When the postman has to obey the directions of the streets, we have the directed version of this problem. Finding an exact solution, in the general case, is intractably difficult. Hence, we have implemented three heuristic algorithms for approximately solving this problem and a procedure for obtaining a lower bound to the optimal length. Also, we present numerical experimentations based on a collection of random instances with up to 30 connected components, 240 vertices and 801 arcs. A lowe…

The character and origin of the manuscripts in the present edition

1995

In the following I try to provide the reader with all the details needed to insert the Godel essays appearing here in the broader context of the rest of his unpublished work, as well as everything about my personal work on them. I start with a short description of what can be found in the Godel Nachlass in Princeton, USA, by referring to the catalogue prepared by John Dawson. Then I attempt to justify the particular selection I made of the manuscripts which I finally decided to study, reconstruct and publish. Such an explanation seems to be advisable given the great amount of Godel’s material unpublished but still extant. Also, I describe some of the historical details relevant to understan…

Direct HPLC Monitoring of Lipase Activity in Reverse Micellar Media

1995

Given the profusion of biotechnological applications of the nonaqueous use of lipases, we have evaluated the possibilities of exploiting the inherent advantages of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for a simple, rapid assay of lipase activity in reverse micellar media, as a convenient alternative to previously reported spectroscopic methods, using both a model system and esterification reaction, and different commercial lipases. The results obtained after a screening for optimized chromatographic conditions in the reverse-phase mode indicate that a satisfactory resolution of the reaction components can be obtained following a straightforward protocol, which permits an accurate, …

The cytotoxicity of mitomycin C and Adriamycin in genetically engineered V79 cell lines and freshly isolated rat hepatocytes

1995

The objective of the present study was to investigate the cytotoxicity of Adriamycin (ADR) and mitomycin C (MMC) in tumor and non-tumor cells with respect to the role of cytochrome P450 (P450). Therefore, genetically engineered V79 Chinese hamster fibroblasts expressing only single enzymes of P450 were used. SD1 and XEM2 cells expressed rat P450IIB1 and P450IA1, respectively, whereas the V79 parental cells contained no detectable P450 levels. The cytotoxicity of ADR and MMC in the V79 cell system was compared with that in freshly isolated hepatocytes from phenobarbital (PB-hepatocytes)- and beta-naphthoflavone (beta NF-hepatocytes)-induced rats. Following 24 h of exposure to ADR equal cytot…

Parasites as indicators of social structure and stock identity of marine mammals

1995

Abstract Introduction: the use of parasites as biological indicators of marine mammals has not yet received all the necessary attention. The aim of this review is to show the value of parasite data in studies of stock identity and social structure. Methods: the application of the technique to marine mammals is hampered by the lack of control over sampling conditions and the paucity of information about the biology of their parasites. Relevant criteria for, suitable parasite tags are discussed. Case studies: previous work on marine mammals is presented to illustrate the usefulness and limitations of parasite data. A study of pilot whales revealed that differences in helminth infections betwe…

Ab initio study of the tautomeric forms of some quinolinediones

1995

Abstract 7,8-dihydroquinoline-4,5 (1 H ,6 H )-dione ( 1 ) and 7,8-dihydroquinoline-2,5-(1 H ,6 H )-dione ( 2 ) in their tautomeric oxo and hydroxy forms have been studied by ab initio Hartree-Fock calculations; tautomerization energies predict a more stable hydroxy structure having an intramolecular hydrogen bond for compound 1, whereas the oxo form is slightly-preferred for compound 2. Fourier Transform-Infra Red (FT-IR) spectra in CHCl 3 solution indicate that the predicted most stable tautomers in the vapour phase remain as such.

Preparation of white beeswax microspheres loaded with valproic acid and kinetic study of drug release

1995

AbstractThe well known antiepileptic valproic acid (1) due to the long treatment of epilepsy may induce many adverse side effects on various systems. To minimize unwanted toxic effects by kinetic control of drug release, 1 was physically entrapped into white beeswax microspheres using the meltable dispersion process utilizing wetting agents. Solid, discrete, reproducible free flowing microspheres were obtained converting the liquid drug droplets into solid material. The average drug content was 17% w/w. More than 95% of the isolated microspheres were of particle size range 200-425 µm. The microspheres were analyzed to quantify the amount of incorporated drug and to characterize the in vitro…

An all-fiber RF modulation technique: frequency response calibration of optical detectors

1995

Two all-fiber Mach-Zender interferometers have been designed to generate RF modulated light at 633 nm and 830 nm. The interferometers are scanned with a piezoelectric tube driven at its fundamental frequency of resonance. The actual experimental arrangement covers the frequency range 1 kHz to 1 GHz. The technique combines several interesting features such as the simplicity, the stability and reliability of all-fiber systems and the use of low-frequency electronics to control and generate the RF modulated light. >

Chloroplast DNA evidence for introgression and long distance dispersal in the desert annualSenecio flavus (Asteraceae)

1995

Phylogenetic analysis of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) restriction site variation supports a close genetic relationship between the Southwest AsianSenecio flavus subsp.breviflorus and the North AmericanS. mohavensis. The intercontinental disjunct distribution of these two desert annuals may have originated via long distance dispersal. The chloroplast genomes of the Southern and North AfricanS. flavus subsp.flavus and subsp.breviflorus differ by at least ten restriction sites, while at most two restriction sites differentiate the cpDNA genomes of subsp.breviflorus and the outgroupS. squalidus. This suggests that the cpDNA genome ofS. flavus subsp.breviflorus may have resulted from introgression an…
